Google has released Google Video Player for Mac which includes the following features:
• Watch videos downloaded from Google Video
• Browse scenes within a video using thumbnails
• Skip to anywhere in the video, even if that portion hasn’t downloaded yet
• Sit back and watch videos in full screen mode
• Resume video downloads automatically
System Requirements:
• Video card with at least 16 MB of RAM
• 1 Ghz or faster processor
• Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher

Neat, just enter some info in the Google video search bar and get videos. Like “porn” for instance.

How about a Universal version of Google Earth already! And how about Google Pro so I can use my GPS with it.
Okay, so will this player play Google’s pay content? I would assume yes, but I can’t find anywhere that says for sure and I’m not about to pay for some video just to find out. Google Video’s help page still says that pay videos are Windows-only, but they may simply not have updated yet.
If we do have access to the premium content, then hurrah for the first real competition to iTunes. Shame Google Video is so pathetic. Either be YouTube or be a video store. Being both doesn’t work.
(For a perfect example, enter “CSI” into the player’s search window and see what comes up.)

I understand why Winblows users would want to use this, but why would Mac users? I get along perfectly with Quicktime and especially with the new Universal Binary of Flip4Mac (and -just for the BBC- Realplayer).
Has the Google player any advantages for us? Is there a need to run ever more apps? Why?

I’m with you, Macaday – I’ve been wondering what this app is all about. You see the videos on Google’s video site, then d/l in iPod format if you want, and view in QT.

Google is going up against M$, they are making their own standard to replace theirs.
This includes making everything for any possibillity, basically making a platform much like Apple’s OS X, Quicktime etc.
Of course another competitor against Quicktime isn’t all that good, but it’s better than just a ‘only windows media or else.’
Of course Googles efforts are in vain unless the create a OS with software and grab the OEM’s from M$.
Google just has too much cash and doesn’t know what to do with it all. So they are trying different things and not succeeding at any.
Ever since they required purchase of the Goggle Earth for better resolution I quit using that.
OS? What OS? Google don’t need no stinkin’ OS! They can do it all online! 😀
Anybody else here think that we might see a Google GUI on top of a Linux base anytime soon?
Something un-bloated, something with VM a la Parallels so that the masses can still use all of their windows software?
Something secure?
With plenty of bundled apps?
Something for say, $99?
Something that might force apple to rethink licensing?

It’s nice that Google took the time to do this. But after I installed it, I wondered “What was the point of this?”. When I did a search in the window, it brought up Safari instead of showing thumbnails of videos in the Google Player window. So basically the only thing this is good for is playing back purchased videos… I think I’ll pass.
Google videos have been playable by Quicktime for a long time…I dont get it, what do you need this for?
