Steve Ballmer was interviewed by German newspaper “Die WELT” in an article published yesterday and some questions touched on Apple Computer, Inc. Martin Stein has provided an English translation on his weblog, “Martin Stein’s Publishing Weblog.”
Stein prefaces the Q&A section with, “After asking Steve if he has a ‘Apple Computer,’ he says that he does not have a Mac nor a iPod. ‘Of course, I have to know the devices. We have to know what the competitors do,’ [Ballmer said].”
Die WELT: But couldn’t you just buy a Mac without hesitation since Apple opened up their machines for Windows?
Ballmer: No, we prefer real PCs.
Die WELT: Was it a satisfaction that Apple had to give in?
Ballmer: Honestly, I don’t think that it is that important. Actually, it is relatively expensive if a user gets a separate Windows OS for his Mac. Not a lot of people will do this.
Die WELT: Apple is leading in the Music business as well. Does this bother you?
Ballmer: No question, it would have been better if the iPod would have been a Microsoft invention. The device is really popular. Apple didn’t invent anything new. They just combined existing technologies in a smart way. They succeeded to create a nice package which bundles Music services, devices and software.
Die WELT: Is Apple’s success reason enough to copy them?
Ballmer: This wasn’t the last word in this competition. Over the next years, a lot of things will happen in the market of portable devices. Who wants to carry different devices to listen to Music, to play games, to take pictures or to communicate with others? A small, integrated device will master many functions. We won’t be simply watching this development.
Die WELT: Is Apple unbeatable?
Ballmer: Which company would be able to compete with Apple at these days? It can only be Microsoft or Apple stays without any serious competitor. I think, everybody deserves some competition.

I know an Apple reseller. Since the Boot Camp announcement, sales have “skyrocketed” and are “multiple times better than ever,” according to my friend.

First, I have talked to a few stores and they don´t see any huge jump in computer sales since bootcamp was announced. Is there a huge jump in copies of Windows XP, too, to going in those Apple computers?
And who says they are converters are Windows PC owners? They could be Apple users that have been sitting on the fence as to whether to buy a Windows computer, but now they don´t need to buy a Windows PC. (Which I think is the real reason for the release – a defensive move by Apple to halt PC sales by Apple owners.)
And how many people are really buying a computer because of a Beta program – bootcamp? Not me, I am waiting for Longhorn and the real un-beta thing.

WIne does not require a M$ license and will allow Mac users the ability to run programs not currently on the Mac. It is also not vulnerable to the many Windows security problems. Best of all, it’s free.

For the most part You can´t use the XP that came with one´s PC computer – I tried it. Most Windows computers come with an OEM version. (Depends on which manufacturer one buys their PC from.)
Maybe some do offer a full-blown version with the computer. Mine didn´t.
Like Apple website says:
“A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.)”

Everyone–from investors to users to MSFT’s own employees–has lost faith in that man, and yesterday’s dumping of the stock is ample and further proof thereof.
Yeah, just keep waiting for Vista, but keep in mind that even when (if?) the consumer version ships, it will STILL be a beta offering. Very few informed, experienced Windows users will touch that thing until the first Service Pack is released.

It’s a fact that a whole lot of windows users out there did not upgrade their OS for years for whatever number of reasons. What does this portend?
It means there are a lot of consumers who own a copy of windows 2000 or windows xp who will at some point upgrade their hardware and and see the rationale for a mac purchase while still hanging on to that 2000 or xp disc to keep them in that comfort zone for a while. wtf. There’s no need to think about buying a windows OS to install on that new leopard driven machine. They already own one.
Personally, I think that adds up to a nice bump in market share not to mention a steady incline to the installed mac base.

Doing it in gradually, while denying anything Windows-related, is the mastery of Steve Jobs and how he’s hoodwinked MS into thinking the move to intel processors was just about performance per watt.
Even if the frog realizes right before that he’s about to boil…it’s too late.

In CompUSA last week, I saw Windows running on an iMac and told the salesman about Parallels. CompUSA is generally the worst place to look at anything Apple.

…but Intel Macs are real PCs. The fact that they boot Windows natively pretty much fits the textbook definition of a “PC” as most people mean it (an x86 box).
Macs are Intel PCs with a single button mouse and otherwise really nice design. The only proprietary thing about them is their ability to run Mac OS X.

At my local CompUSA (western MA) the Apple rep told me quite plainly that he’s witnessed, conservatively, a 15% uptick in Mac sales since the Boot Camp announcement. 15%!
I was in there one day getting a hard drive and I personally witnessed a professional PC-using woman grilling him about running Windows on a Mac. He happily answered her questions. She bought an iMac.
A couple who are friends of ours who own their own business like us but are wall-to-wall PC users have asked about these developments each time they’ve come over in the last few weeks to watch DVD’s. He is the president of their company, and he’s just salivating about being able to run Windows software without actually running Windows, and the possibility of maybe being able to do that with Leopard.
All of this is ALREADY HAPPENING and the general public at large doesn’t even really know anything about this development. Can you imagine what’ll happen soon if Apple actually (gasp!) STARTS TO ADVERTISE THE MAC AND THIS FEATURE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC?!?!?!?

As a PC user who picked up a Mini last year and is thinking of switching to an iMac or one of the upcoming PowerMac replacements as his “main” computer, I come to this site regularly to see what is going on in the world of Macs. I like the Mac and think it’s a great OS, but will still run XP and Vista on when it comes out. I can understand the appeal of Macs and am fully aware of all the good and bad on both sides.
Having said all that, is it really necessary to refer to Balmer as an “asshat”? How old is the person posting the MDN take – 12? I mean really, if you want to convert people and brag up the OS and Apple it would be FAR more effective to present a logical argument on why a person would want to do so rather than early teen potty-talk. I realize that Microsoft has given people a reason to dislike them but the zealot behavior of the Mac (and Linux) fanatics hurts far more than it helps. Microshaft? M$? Microsucks? Please. I am firmly convinced that the attitudes and ranting of the anti-Microsoft crowd has slowed down people who may be on the fence looking at alternatives. If web sites want to be taken seriously, an even token attempt at acting professional would go a long way. If you want to rant, that’s what blogs are for.
ron – A different take. I too saw an iMac running Windows at our local CompUSA store. Just about everyone in the Apple section played around with that iMac sooner or later. Since the Apple owned stores will not show a Mac running Windows, it’s great that other stores do. CompUSA and others complete the marketing picture.

Boot Camp Is a huge selling point. The Apple Stores should have it installed on floor systems, to at least give demos to people who ask.

Hate to break it to you boys and girls and stevie ballmer, but there are a whole lot of moms and pops out there who still steal windows. About 80% of the “normal” people in Australia buy backyard white boxes from small computer shops who don’t provide proper licenses for windows. 50% of these people get a new version of windows eg vista for their old pc “from a friend”.
So, no, buying a mac and putting windows on it isn’t going to be “relatively expensive” – let’s face it you can’t police this activity – and the other 50% of people will just use their current OEM version from their old machine.
Regarding Apple’s missed opportunities to buyers–
There’s a fine line between allowing Windows to run and “advertising it.” If they have it running, it’s broadcasting the idea that they’ll support it. It would be a bait and switch. It’d be like going to a Ford showroom and seeing a souped up Focus with a Porsche engine– “um… no, we don’t seel that.” “Then why do you have it here?” [crickets chirping]
CompUSA and others can advertise. They’re only retailers. If someone wants a Mac, they’ll get the Mac. If they want a Windows computer, they can get any number of cheapo boxes. My bet is that if the guy’s really interested, he will continue to do some research, find a computer to test it out, then take the plunge with a mini.
On a side note, though– the Apple guy should have discussed the process by which Windows can be installed and that macs are known for their ease of use.

I believe the old addage holds true: Some customers just aren’t worth having. If anyone is seriously too stupid to install Windows on a Mac w/o help then we just don’t need them around. When I first started using Linux (many years ago) I just taught myself how to use it. It’s not horribly user friendly but the layout in Gnome & KDE were simple enough. And the online help was always available when I had questions.
When I first started using Macs, yes, there was a learning curve. But again, it was nothing overly complicated and definitely nothing I couldn’t do on my own.
Honestly. After reading some of the reviews in here on the various articles, how can people possibly be so dumb?! And why were they allowed to survive past 1 year old?

However, somebody that wanted to try a Mac or liked them but was required to use a Windows-only program will buy the Mac and install Windows rather than a Windows machine. You are correct in this may have been a defensive move however good defense often wins wars.

On a ‘real’ PC there is no other operating system for the user to choose and learn to appreciate. Users of ‘real’ PCs will only be exposed to Microsoft’s way of doing things, the ‘one true way’.
But he really doesn’t have the intellect to think through what he says. Later, when talking of what will kill the iPod, he claims “A small, integrated device will master many functions.”
So by his logic, an iPod is a bad idea because it doesn’t combine the functions of multiple devices, yet he condemns the Mac because it will run OS X, Windows and Linux, rather than just Windows. The Mac is already a small integrated device that masters many functions.
I might expect flawed logic like that to come from the local teenage Windows apologist, trying to score points, but one might hope that the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world could be a little smarter than that. It’s no wonder that their stock is sliding.

It’s true … Windows owners are not going to switch to Mac hardware to run their Windows OS.
However, some Windows owners will switch and run their Windows OS – in addition to OS X – because there is a program … Visio, perhaps? … they must be able to run and you just can’t get it unless you are running Windows. Maybe one in ten couldn’t switch if they wanted to – not and keep their job. That 9% of the total market, a 9% already used to paying for top-of-the-line hardware, now has the option. It could be good for a 15% boost in Apple’s market share. A nibble for MS, a feast for Apple.
Apple is now #4 or #5 in overall sales. A couple of years of double-digit growth in market share might move it to #3 – maybe #1 in consumer sales of systems costing $1,000 or more. That’s real money!
My company bought me a laptop running 1920×1200 display. The resolution is incredible and with Clear Text enabled, the text looks almost printed. I go back to my fuzzy low-rez Powerbook less and less.

I’m writing this in Windows on my MacBook right now. This is by far the best Windows PC I’ve ever used…mostly because it doesn’t have any OEM bloatware, but it’s really nice to be able to boot into OS X and use Disk Utility to routinely backup my Windows partition, or as a general backup if Windows bombs on me. Of course I also happen to prefer OS X and use it instead (except for when I need Windows for testing cross platform or Windows specific apps).
Anyone who bought a full version of Windows XP for their PC can use the disc they already have. Others can hack their OEM discs. Some VARs are selling Intel Macs with Windows already installed. And of course the leading source of Windows XP, piracy, is no problem at all.
Microsoft just can’t seem to do anything right since Monkey Boy became CEO…talk about an underperformer who should be fired!

I dig the Mighty Mouse and I have one, but my MacBook Pro only has one big freakin button. I hate lugging a mouse around with my MacBook Pro.
I can’t wait for Apple to wake up, smell the coffee and give MacBook Pros two buttons. It’s going to be so much nicer not having to always control-click when I’m using heavy-duty stuff like Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org).

There is a computer platform that requires their OS. They refused to provide it.
See, they dragged their feet with Virtual PC for the new Macs and now they are starting to get burnt. Apple simply did what they had to do, offer the Virtual PC capabilities to the new macs.
The old Microsoft would love to get onboard, would’ve shipped the first day, but then create some proprietary version of it, and put the hooks in there to make the entire experience flawed in some way.
At least they are too bloated now to even try that approach, it indicates serious problems with execution, and opens up the door to Apple to entirely regain the consumer market.

I agree, but the issue is support for Windows. The saleman should have been upfront about explaining everything regarding Macs, including Boot Camp. That was a clear mistake.
But imagine having Windows loaded on Macs and new buyers purchase them not knowing these are any different that a Dell (except they look better). $1500, and no support for the software?
Apple needs to welcome Windows booting– but carefully within its stores. It can’t pretend to be a Windows reseller when it isn’t.

Nah, this Bootcamp is a defensive move by Apple aimed at Apple owners for a bunch of reasons that we don´t know yet. (Like maybe Apple has data showing that the reason Apple market share is not moving up much is because old Apple owners (as in all the OS9 owners out there) are switching to Windows. Or software developers just don´t see any money making software for Macs. Just a hunch.)

There are some great points here and they just get glossed over in the fanwar.
-Mac users may be purchasing macintels now that they can run windows, but these people are buying NEW MACS.
-XP is expensive, but you will toss or re-install completely on your virus riddled machine. Why not get a NEW machine. If you are then you can look at a Mac as replacing that stuff on your desk. All you need to do is read the ‘how to install an OEM copy’ websites from a google search.
-XP now has an update for the ‘genuine windows’ advantage or some weird TLA. Simply put, it reports your IP and tells you that your version of windows is pirated. If this makes people paranoid enough to purchase a full version then why go w/ just a PC again?
-The Windows security support layer (anti-this-and-that) slows machines down much more than a similar mac based solution. An in-store demo machine won’t be running all that stuff because it makes everything seem like it’s 5 years old.
-Apple isn’t missing an opportunity yet. Bootcamp is beta. Beta is not going to guarantee quality. As such, it’s runs against the company goals to make any claims about bootcamp until 10.5 and then only when bootcamp has been refined
Infrequently (802.11, firewire) Apple is on the cutting edge. The ipod wasn’t the first mp3 player. I have a diamond rio that pre-dates it. It wasn’t just fancy packaging. It was form, capacity, and functionality combined that made the ipod a home run. Simply put, Apple doesn’t have to be the first one out with something to come into the market. Put the R&D on it first, THEN put the logo on it and you win. The ipod with video is junk, but it works just well enough as an added feature to the large capacity ipods that Apple won’t be seen as a failure and can get some content going its way, while assessing requirements for the next ipod.
Will a convergence device win? Of course. You’re ignorant if you think that an Audio, Video, Phone, Camera, PDA, GPS (all high quality) isn’t going to be the device type of the future. It’s about battery life, quality components, and ease of use. If there is a company w/ the brains to get MOST of it there then it’s Apple (followed by nokia, sony-e, ms, and palm). Unfortunately OS X has a HUGE footprint, but what are licenses for.
Will the ipod be unseated in the music player arena? No.

This is a great site for news related to Apple, but the discourse can sometimes descend to such low levels, that the vast majority of Mac users (a group I belong to) end up being grossly misrepresented and stereotyped. I think the same applies to the Linux community (to which I also happen to belong).
What many fail to realize is how this impacts on Apple’s market share. If you just look at numbers, there are possibly many more MS zealots out there using similarly degenerate discourse. There impact is trivial, however. When you’re a repulsive member of a large community, you can easily be overlooked. However, if the community was small, you will stand out more. This, in a way, is not that different than the position of visible ethnic minorities in any part of the world: They need to be extra-careful not to tarnish the reputation of their minority.
So those of us who are not, or no longer are, Windows users really have to participate in maintaining a positive image for the Mac community. I think that doing so is no less important that TV ads promoting iMacs or software that is hoped to entice people to switch to the Mac.
Regarding the degredation of commentary on this site: it wasn’t so long ago that this wasn’t the case. Things here used to be very intellectual and benign.

It’s a bit too early to be calling people ignorant if their vision of the future doesn’t match yours. If there’s one thing the iPod has taught us it’s that simplicity sells. There will always be a market for dedicated devices that do one thing well and are easy to use.

The reason they would put Windows on there is so they can do something with all that software they bought after years of Windows. In fact, the most useful apps may ironically be ones that hardly use the OS/Windows UI at all.. Games.
You still haven’t answered the question: OBVIOUSLY they wouldn’t buy a Mac because they liked Windows.. you do it for OS X and Security and Mac exclusive apps. You boot Windows once in a while for Windows-only apps, not Windows.

This is exactly what happens to me. I even had a friend give me a copy of Windows so I could put it on my iMac and be “happy.”
I read the Asshat moniker and laughed out loud. It was very funny as a response to Ballmer saying he would prefer a “real PC”. It is just such a self-seriving and patently untrue perspective.
The asshat has billions to protect. I suppose one cannot expect unbiased assements from him. It is just very funny how tranparent he is about it.
Just keep the dummies dumb. That is what he would like.

Thanks for the info, but the people you reference did not buy the Macs because of beta Bootcamp (as the other person was claiming), they bought it because they hate Windows and won´t be putting it on their macs.
And buying old and slow G4s bought off eBay doesn´t help Apple any.

andy, good point. The xbox260 uses “Xenon” processors, which are triple core IBM PowerPC chips (complete with altivec units in each core). So much for normal PCs.

You can definitely download Windows XP SP2 from a torrent site, burn the iso to a CD, use it to get boot camp running, and it will work great. Of course, that wouldn’t be legal, but you COULD do it. That’s probably why Microsoft recently started automatically installing their “Windows validation” crap if you have auto-update enabled. =)

Two days ago I saw an interview with Steve Ballmer on german TV (I believe it was the interview that MDN is talking about). After watching the interview for about ten minutes, it really wasn’t surprising that Microsoft has so many problems nowadays. The man really is an idiot. If any other company had such a guy as CEO, they’d have been dead long ago.

POOR MICROSOFT! Are people actually getting Windows without paying for it? The retail price is only $399 – I can’t imagine why anybody would have a problem paying for it.

I completely agree, and it reminds me of financial problems the USA is having lately.

What Ballmer means is that Microsoft prefers PCs that use cheaper parts so they die faster, thus forcing the user to buy a new PC because repairing or replacing the parts in the old one will cost as much or more than buying a new one.
Of course, the new PC has a new Windows license for it, and therefore Microsoft makes more $$.

I will confirm this for you. I’m comfortable on windows right now and I’m not looking for alternatives. I would not say I’m advanced user of computers but I’m above the intermediate level. I came to this blog (website?) browsing the internet.
I am anti-Apple (read: not for Microsoft but anti-Apple and Mac) because of people like this. I might have an Apple computer right now if I didn’t feel like an asshat or a douchebag having that logo on the back of my laptop. I’m going to get crucified for saying this on an Apple blog but really that’s how it comes across even if you people aren’t that way. I feel a sickening feeling of disgust every time I see that logo, every time someone calls it an iPod and not a music player or an mp3 player. I’m going to continually stay away from anything Apple until I can meet an educated person and computer literate person (in real life, I know some of you exist here on the internet) that can convince me to switch.
