Windows XP running on Intel-based Apple Macintosh

“We now have Windows XP running on the Intel-based Macintosh — as a guest operating system under the Linux version of VMware. This is quite exciting and promising, especially since the performance of Windows XP seems quite amazing (based on our limited test run so far) — mind you, the kernel and the environment we are using are experimental and unoptimized, so it would not be unreasonable to expect even better performance,” Amit Singh reports.

“To anybody who has used Windows XP under Virtual PC on the PowerPC version of Mac OS X: you will simply be blown away by how fast Windows XP runs under VMware on the new hardware,” Singh reports. “we have so far been unable to find time to create a Knoppix distribution for general use — it is on our priority list.”

  1. XP is yesterdays technology, of course it runs well with it’s low grade graphics, bitmapped jaggied text etc. on a fast new processor.

    Duh!

Now getting Mac OS X to run easily on a cheap Dell, that’s news!!

  2. Why do mac users with no need to run windows post (complaints) in a thread that’s obviously of interest to those of us who need to?

I think it will be a great help when I move to Intel since I have to test in a Windows environment for compatability (and troubleshoot clients) – and I don’t want to carry 2 laptops. Yes, I do need to workout more, but that’s not going to do the trick.

  3. oh yeah, I forgot to throw in my thanks again to Adobe for postponing my move for another year and a half or so…

Adobe: the final release of Flash and Photoshop for Intel better be flawless. Won’t it be a laugh (again) when Microsoft beats Adobe with their version of Office for Intel. But a very sad, sort of quiet laugh…

  4. Spot on, Greg Nacu. I just spoke to a friend today who would like to get a Mac, but the software for his medical practice is Windows only. He was interested to know that he can now run a Windows environment–when he HAS to–yet enjoy the Mac experience for his other computing tasks.

I think products like Q and WinTel will help attract switchers to the Mac platform and that ought to be good news for all us Mac devotees.

MW: there. There, there boys, just take your meds and you’ll calm right down.

  5. It’s about switchers.

There is a lot of scientific code — open source — written for Unix/Linux. Some of it is available for use with Unix/Linux window managers, but not OS X. I want access to that. I also want some of the features of the superior Mac hardware and OS X based software. An Intel based Mac running Linux and OS X is ideal for me. I also like the idea of others being able to run Windows because I have a bunch of AAPL stock, and I believe Apple will soon be eating the PC makers’ lunch. By the way, most Linux users that I know love the Mac.

A bigger share of the market benefits all Mac users. So quit yer bitchin.

I really want to know why MacDude has this perverse obsession with cheap Dells.

Because he thought Dell was talking to him with their ads: “MacDude, your getting a Dell”

    So he did.

And now he’s trying to justify it, without letting on that he already has one.

  7. Admit it, deep down inside the reason you want to run Windows is because you know it’s the way of the masses and you want to be accepted and part of normal society. 90% of the world can’t be wrong. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  8. Lemmings don’t always think for themselves and jsut go with the masses even if they don’t know what they are doing.

I’d say 50% of the Windows uses barely know how to open a computer.

A lot of Windows computers are just dust collectors.

Much of the 90% just look at and say “Oh that thing, I don’t even know what to do with it”.

Thats really not normal. It’s just stupid.

About the only reason anybody would need to run windows is when poorly funded organizations just refuse to look at the income stream they could collect by opening up to Mac users.

  9. Look at the positive side;

Windoze users now have another brand added on their list. While running their xp on the beautiful Apple, they also get the chance to try out the OS X. Result? Convertion!

For Apple users, now we can more choices on games! More choices on softwares! (And hope not more VISTA [Virus, Infections, Trojans, Ads ] ) Results? Convenience & Choices.

As the result? We still win!!!! Way to go, Apple!!!!

  10. As far as I’ve read, the prize money at digg.com goes to someone who boots XP natively on an Intel-based Mac.

And for the record, I’m with Ozzy. Who wants to buy a new Mac, buy VMware, and <then> buy a copy of Windows from MS just to run a Windows app or two.

  11. Someone please ban the guy that keeps posting about Apple transitioning to Windows. Oh wait…that’s a dvorak dig. Funny thing about that link…you get to vista info and find:

“Windows Vista introduces a breakthrough experience designed to help you confidently find, view, and organize your information. Coming Soon”

The category of ‘user experience’ is coming soon. That’s like saying Mac OS X is frozen and ready to ship…but erm…the finder will come in the first point update.

I think it’s great people are able to use XP on their intel macs. For some things it is necessary. For some things it’s just less of a hassle to run it than set up the workaround on an individual basis.

Invite in the enemy? Enemies should be able to hurt you, not just copy you and point fingers. It’s not like people are going to switch to XP only and abandon Mac OS X just because they can run it on the same machine. That’s kinda a no brainer.

Then there’s the whole ’emulation’ thing. You guys do realize that most of this stuff is sandboxed. When you get to the best emulation gear you have full control over what can be shared or accessed and how, thus eliminating any crossover security concerns.

The problem with windows isn’t that it is virus prone, it’s that you have to spend money on anti-virus software (sure there’s some freebies, but they don’t cover everything) AND you have to spend a LOT OF TIME updating both your virus defs and the os. There’s also the little matter of your machine running REALLY Slooooooooooow because of all the anti-junkware running on it. However, that’s only going to affect the windows part. You can run windows in a low grade emulation on your mac and have no additional security compromise as long as you care for it just like you would a PC.

I would think that running them side by side would give users a big lesson in how much of a pain XP is (reboot, update, reboot, play with drivers etc) and draw people even further away from it.

Vista.. sure, it looks good. It will be a lot better than XP. Wake up to that. If you want to be blind go ahead. It will even do a few things better than Tiger and maybe one thing better than 10.5…until 10.5.1, but it will still lack so many features that are in the Mac OS that…well let’s face it…

Windows is a pedestrian OS for getting from A to B. If you add bells and whistles it’s still a stripped down dog compared to Mac OS X, which is WORLD CLASS.

As to the wah linux/unix apps not running on os x because of the windows manager??? OK, get rid of apples x11 and toss the aqua stuff for a more compatible environment, then slap in kde or gnome or their combined project or whatever and add your app. Mac OS X is a UNIX operating system. That whole Unix like thing was a marketing mistake.

And if you were honest about it you’d port the ‘scientific’ application yourself. It is x86 based Unix. It just ain’t that hard cuz.
