Apple has cut $200 off the price of the iMac G5 20-inch, dropping it to $1,499. Damn thats a good deal. Its still a killer computer and has an awesome screen. Deduct the price of a 20″ screen off that and you are getting a G5 for around £480 (education price).

Great price for the 20″ iMac G5..
The only bummer about buying the G5 version is regarding the “rumored” movie store coming this year..
According to rumor, this Movie service may only be compatible with intel-based Macs.. Apparently the only DRM that the big Hollywood studios would allow is both hardware and software based.. Something that only the Intel Macs will be able to provide..
Again, this is only rumor, but it does sound plausible.. There are several stories i’ve read stating that apart from getting a faster chip inside the laptops, DRM and Hollywood are another major reason for the Intel switch.
WHAAATT!!!!
Whaatt????
That is a great deal, but I’d still pay the extra $200 for the Core Duo version. That’s where the future is definitely at, plus it runs a lot cooler and quieter than the G5 models do.
I must say that I do wish there had been only $200 difference when we bought our 17″ the day Front Row was introduced, but…
SJR, maybe you have heard one that had the update problem. My iMac G5 (iSight PPC) is almost silent. Most of the time it makes no noise at all, and only sometimes can you hear a slight fan noise.
This is while I’m working with video or my wife is doing newspaper layouts in Quark or heavy duty PhotoShop work.
We did update Tiger to 10.4.3 a few weeks ago and upon re-start the fans spooled up, but that was easy to correct and has not occurred again.
If anyone has a new PPC iMac that has excessive fan noise, check out the discussion forums at Apple.
Still, a 20″ would be nice…

So what are the reasons for this discount?
They need to sell as many of the older machines as they can. I suspect that the new DUOs are selling way better than the PPC units. That’s a very good sign for Apple for the future. I expect if you wait a while longer the price will drop even more, down to barely obove cost, I should think.
MW: meeting-the new Duos are clearly meeting the needs of current purchasers.
Many iMac G5s have been plagued with heat/noisy fan issues ever since the first revision came out in 2004, and I’ve seen it first hand on more than one myself.
It is a known fact that the Core Duo produces much less heat than the G5, which is precisely why there never was a PowerBook G5. This in turn means that the iMac’s cooling system and fans don’t have to work nearly as hard to keep the Core Duo cool inside the enclosure as they did with the G5 processor in there.
The 20″ iMac G5 for $1499 is a bargain, but don’t forget that you’re still getting yesterday’s technology (and both the good and bad that go along with it) for that price.
movie store for Intel mac only. I hardly think so. Given the number of Macs and PCs that use the iTMS I hardly think it makes any economic sense to limit your customer base to the select few with the latest and greatest. Intel Mac market will be smaller than the PowerPC Mac market for quite a while. Use your head not your FUD!
I’m the owner of an original 1.8Ghz 17″ G5 iMac, and a new 17″ iMac Core Duo. The new Intel-based Mac is FAR quieter than my original iMac, and in fact, that’s the reason I bought one. The fan noise from the original iMac G5 was so loud and irritating I hardly used it, opting instead to use my PowerBook or my Dell PC most of the time, while leaving the iMac G5 for the occasional scanning job or for my wife’s light usage.
Well, no more. I love the new Intel-based iMac, it’s fast and extremely quiet. I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 at work, and while that’s the quietest computer I’ve ever used, I’d have to say that the new iMac comes in a close second. Kudos to Apple for improving their product so much in only a year’s time.

Did I hear RUMOR…..
Obviously the new movie service you speak of will not be operated or owned by Apple. They already have iTunes (although they don’t yet have full feature length movies yet). I don’t think Apple will leave behind 20 million+ current Mac users for the Intel installed base so quickly.
….Unless this has to do with some Intel-based Apple TiVo like gizmo which everyone has been clammoring for, then it WILL make sense because to get feature length movies you will need TO BUY the Intel-based Apple product (which hasn’t been announced yet). I suppose it’s possible – but it still is a frikin’ weird rumor
