Disney plans to expand its video download offerings beyond Apple’s iTunes Store

“The Walt Disney Co. plans to expand its video download offerings beyond its relationship with Apple’s iTunes store, a company official said today,” Peter Kafka reports for Forbes. “Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Tom Staggs said during an investors’ conference call that the company would likely offer shows like ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ via other platforms as long as ‘people are able to provide quality consumer experience and requisite intellectual property protection.'”

“Staggs said Disney had sold 1.5 million downloads via iTunes to date, but said the sales were not reducing the value of the shows’ other income streams, including advertising and syndication,” Kafka reports. “The Disney exec also predicted that ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ would eventually generate $1 billion in operating profit when the shows are sold for syndication.”

    Maybe they can talk to Warner also. That would be cool.

    I’d like to see them get the old MGM classic cartoons (Tom & Jerry, Droopy, etc), but I’m not sure if MGM (now part of Sony) has the rights, or if Time Warner does. If it’s the former, hell has a better chance of freezing first, if it’s the latter, then we’ve got a good chance.

  2. ‘Course they will – he probably was initially against the deal in the first place and now they see the application of it. Hopefully the dollar symbols won’t cloud their vision. The key will be “quality” because frankly their straight to video market has been anything but that definition.

  3. Considering Warner is leading the charge to change the way Apple applies it’s $.99 pricing program to songs their is no chance for sony or warner to play nice with apple as far as shows go.
