J.P. Morgan analyst: We expect Intel-based Macs to be introduced at MacWorld next week

“J.P. Morgan research analyst Christopher Danely maintained a ‘neutral’ rating on Intel in anticipation of overcapacity but raised earnings estimates after checks indicated that the company is on track to begin shipping processors for Apple’s new PCs this quarter,” Maya Roney reports for Forbes. “‘We expect the PCs to be introduced at MacWorld next week,’ wrote the analyst in a research note on Friday. Danely said Intel should ship its processors into roughly 55% of Apple’s calendar 2006 PC shipments, which should translate into roughly 4.8 million processors.”

Danely raised calendar 2006 estimates for Intel to earnings of $1.59 per share on revenue of $42.8 billion, from earnings of $1.55 per share on revenue of $42.2 billion, based on the new Apple business, according to Roney’s report.

  1. And when they aren’t everyones gonna start whinging and bitching about it. The choruses of “Steve promised” will be in full effect even though he did no such thing.

And people wonder why Apple never talks about product rumors.

  2. “…but raised earnings estimates after checks indicated that the company is on track to begin shipping processors for Apple’s new PCs this quarter…”

What kind of checks? I wonder where this info is coming from?

Regardless, I hope Apple does announce them now, because everybody’s expecting them. This is one area where the rumor mill can be bad for Apple.

  3. Queezzie, there is more to Apple’s switch than just prepping the hardware. None of those other box companies have to deal with issues like makings sure Rosetta is going to be usable or that developers are ready with Universal Binary versions of their software, etc. Just because the hardware might be ready doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to ship, and Apple doesn’t usually announce hardware until they’re ready to ship.

Besides, the big news here isn’t about the fact that Apple is using the NEW Intel chips, it’s that they’re using Intel chips at all. No one cares that those other companies announced their products first. Except, apparently, you.

  4. > And people wonder why Apple never talks about product rumors.

That’s an idiotic statement. The reason why rumors are so rampant and covered is because Apple offers no future product or plan guidance and rumors are the only way any information comes out. They like the benefit of suprising the competition and the extra press it gains them upon annoucements, but that comes with a price.

And not all rumors need to be addressed directly–Apple could at any point have issued a statement, or replied in any interview, that there are no Intel Macs planned for the beginning of the year.

  5. If Apple does announce an Intel ‘Book or mini, I suspect sales will be through the roof. So many people have been wishing for this for so long… 55% of shipments? I think that is far too conservative.

On another note, why would I trust an instestment analyst who makes forecasts on pure speculation? They should hold judgement until there is an actual product.

  6. ndelc – you may think in terms of rosetta, universal binaries, etc hocus pocus but the 99.9% of PC owners could give a crap less. (PC Owners – the ones Apple needs to buy their computers.)
The Best Buy salesman is going to saying why wait for a Mac, a Mac will use the same hardware as this new Sony, and works just as good at writing email and going to MDN to write idiotic anonymous opinions…and its available now and its $300 cheaper.

If Apple does not show off the new computers…oooh, disappointment by lots of people.

  7. Goldenrule, nothing I wrote suggested anything about how well they would sell, or what it would do to Apple’s marketshare, so I don’t understand why your comments were addressed to me.

I merely said that the fact that other PC makers announced computers with the new Intel chips this week has no bearing on whether or not Apple will next week because Apple has different issues that need to be addressed before they can bring their new computers to market.

  8. In his dog and pony shows Steve is all about newest, fastest, smallest, coolest – with the PowerPC chip he had the exclusivity in announcing all the specs and performance on the that chip. Now with Intel that “surprise” is bascially gone.
Watch Steve push more the cool design. (I am guessing the new Macmini will be even smaller)

Of course, The big test is will software (Photoshop,InDesign, etc, and games) that runs on both platforms run faster on the MacOS…if not…

  9. My guess is that Mac Mini w/ Intel will be announced at MW but not ship until next month. The new iBook won’t be announced until next month and the Powerbook annoucement will be later than that.

  10. Mac Bill: Where are you getting this information that “most” Apple developers haven’t finished their Intel ports? My understanding has always been that, for the vast majority of developers, porting would be trivial. Unless your contention is that “most” developers still aren’t using Xcode? I know some really big important ones aren’t (or at least weren’t at the time of the Intel announcement), but I thought a majority of Apple developers were.

I can believe that some developers are still having problems with their Intel ports, but I find it hard to believe “most” of them are.

  11. “The reason why rumors are so rampant and covered is because Apple offers no future product or plan guidance and rumors are the only way any information comes out. “

    Whoa. Time out.

Apple did, in fact, offer future product guidance. Let’s set the wayback machine to June 2005.

At WWDC 2005, Jobs said that Apple would be begin shipping Intel-based Macintoshes around “this time next year” and that the entire product line would be converted to Intel by the “end of 2007.”

Thus, we have this crazy idea: Apple will begin shipping Intel-based Macintoshes around June 2006. Where the rumor sites have come up with January 2006 is anybody’s guess.

Essentially, it doesn’t matter what Apple says. The rumor sites will still come up with their own spin on it.

  12. “At WWDC 2005, Jobs said that Apple would be begin shipping Intel-based Macintoshes around “this time next year” and that the entire product line would be converted to Intel by the “end of 2007.” “

Actually, Steve said: “Apple would be begin shipping Intel-based Macintoshes by “this time next year”. He also said the transition would being in 2006.

That gives us a time frame of anywhere between Jan 1, 2006 and the day before WWDC 06 starts.

  13. With all of the BS predictions going on, if Apple was not going to announce an Intel equiped Mac they would have shot down the rumors by now.

    Don’t worry, be happy.

  14. It’s a fact that Apple does not reveal any future products and has been working on this project for more than 5 years. I would assume Apple has “something” comming @ WWDC.

  15. We know that Intel has announced the new processors and that they are shipping. That means that Apple have had porcessors for testing for many months now, which would have allowed them to develop the new machine.

The question ia are Intel now providing Apple with processors in sufficient quantities to permit product launch. Given that other PC manufacturers are announcing PCs with the new processors, it is reasonable to assume that Apple will not have a supply issue. This has been one of the major issues Apple have faced in the last 7 years and something I was worried about with the intel transistion.

Therefore , given Jobs drive and ambition and the fact the the new CPUs are available, I highly doubt that Apple will not be annoucing new Intel based products at MacWorld. It would totally go against Apple’s history of releasing the latest and greatest as soon as they can.

Mac Mini sounds like a shoe-in and hopefully the iBook as well.

  16. Get ready to buy Apple stock.

    Why?

When no intel macs are announced at MW everyone will panic and the stock will drop a little 7-10pts?, and then buy, then watch the meteoric rise
of purchased stock when June comes around and those sweet little
intel macs are causing a frenzy.
