“Apple Computer is making an absolute killing with its ultra small iPod Nano. How good is the bounty you ask? Well, Apple is shipping about 100,000 units of the iPod Nano alone. Pretty impressive figure for a year, right? Think again, because Apple is shipping this many units every single day,” Varun Dubey writes for CoolTechZone. “The situation is so ridiculously delightful for Apple that it has partnered with Synaptics to help make the Clickwheel as well, since Apple itself is not able to meet demand.”
Dubey writes, “This has prompted Apple to perhaps consider 1GB variants of the Nano and rightfully so. The reason being is that despite all the hoopla about the scratches, people do indeed fancy the Nano for its sexiness. The other rumor doing the rounds is that Apple will drop the price of its iPod Shuffle to $80 for the 512MB variant. We might just see the iPod Shuffle being priced at $80 and $129 (for 1GB) while the Nano will sell for $149 for the 1GB edition. It has been fairly obvious that people are always willing to pay for the style and not necessarily the features (notably the Nokia 8800).”
“Apple could in fact pull a fast one on all of us and discontinue the Shuffle 1GB altogether and replace it with the 1GB Nano. I wouldn’t be surprised.. Needless to say, 2006 will be a rather successful year for Apple. It’s already sold out of its 1GB iPod Shuffle, it’s selling 100,000 iPod Nano units per day, and of course, with the Intel Yonah based Apple notebooks debuting in the second week of January, Apple shows no sign of slowing down,” Dubey writes.

The reason for this is because the stories of ‘unreadable’ screens due to scratches are vastly overblown. I could take sandpaper to this thing and it wouldn’t render the screen unreadable.
This class action lawsuit is ridiculous and should be taken with a grain of salt considering the lawyers are from the same firm that Microsoft uses.

I own an iPod (15GB 3rd Gen) and a couple Macs. I think the Macs are way cooler than the iPod is. Am I the only one is thinks the Mac has more potential tham the iPod?

1GB iPod nano would sell like hotcakes, I tell you, hotcakes. I was at my local Apple store just 2 days ago and there was a lady ready to rip my arm off for the last one of the black nanos. I mean, come on people, it’s just an iPod. Is it really worth committing an aggravated assault over it?

My teenage son’s nano was incredibly scratched up making the screen very difficult to read. Too much time in his pocket and backpack unprotected.
Luckily the thing also had a problem with the battery charging so it was replaced and we immediately bought a pack of sleeves that Apple sells to protect it. They’re very nice and should keep this new one in much better shape. I’m impressed at how well the click wheel works even though it is covered and protected.
I still like the shuffle because it’s very tough and I don’t mind knocking it around. I’d hate to see it go away completely.
JBR, I think you’re right. It makes a lot more sense to drop the 512MB shuffle and lower the price on the 1 GB. This maintains the average selling price for Apple, and their margin is probably going to stay the same because of falling component prices.

As far as the Shuffle is concerned, I’d like to see 2 models: one small enough in profile for men to insert in the ear canal and one suited for women to use as a tampon called iShuffle my tampon. Naturally in pink.

I’d be really curious to learn of Varun Dubay’s “rumor” source. I posted the exact same thing last week on the Motely Fool Apple Board.
The only thing I had different from JBR’s prediction is that I maintained the price of the 1GB Shuffle at $129. People have already shown they aren’t interested in iPods priced at $99, so why give them one. You’re leaving money on the table, when you don’t have to.
WIth these scratches? Has anyone ever tried those scratch removing pencils they avertise for plastic lens eye glasses?
I think Apple’s finally realized a screenless ipod won’t cut it in today’s competitive market. I predict 1 GB Nano selling at $149. Say goodbye to the shuffle! probably will sell mine on ebay as a novelty item.
