New York Times: Apple’s new video-capable iPod is its own addictive medium

“The new iPod is its own little addictive medium. Its limitations – a viewing experience that requires headphones and a hand-held screen – create a level of intimacy that arcs to television in its infancy, when the glowing object was so marvelous it begat silent reverie,” David Carr writes for The New York Times. “You now stare at bejeweled color and crisp lines rendered in miniature. The ability to download programming of my choosing gives me a new kind of private, restorative time, a virtual third place between a frantic workplace and a home brimming with activity.”

“‘Lost’ always sounded like a show I’d like, but as the father of three with a job that required long hours, and a commute thrown in for good measure, viewing network programming at an appointed hour never seemed to work out. The ‘Lost’ bandwagon left without me,” Carr writes. “With the new iPod, I could start at the beginning of the series and view ‘Lost’ at my leisure. The average episode lasts 44 minutes, about the length of my commute. Watching ‘Lost’ on the bus next to a large man working his way through a crinkly bag of nuts is a deeply satisfying media experience. Goodbye crinkly nut man. Hello Claire and John Locke. (It is a bonus that the man can’t see the image from the side, as hard as he tries.)”

“I actually watch very little television in my home. Between the phones, both cell and landline, the kids’ homework and other needs, and a wireless broadband connection that keeps me on the work grid, the TV often ends up being a silent piece of furniture,” Carr explains. “The iPod, on the other hand, gets charged, programmed and used almost every day… Still, what kind of idiot would pay for shows that are otherwise free? I am paying a so-called convenience charge… I have become the gift that keeps on giving for Apple. The company has my credit card and I will continue to fork over $1.99 an episode to find out what is around the bend in season two of ‘Lost.’ When that ends, I will probably give ‘Monk’ a try.”

  1. First post? Second? O.K., what does Mac Daily think of VUGO? I want to RECORD my dvds on the v i-pod, and take the video on the road. This is fair use, after all they are my dvds. As far as I know you can do it with cds-so…..
Goto VUGO.COM and check it out. Also who is 10 goto 10 (poster). I want BASIC to come with All macs from day one, not go back to an old Apple II.! Come on Woz!!! It can’t hurt Apple, only help them, and I’d love to see what Woz would do.

  2. He’s on the top of the wave right now…and that’s great. But there is a Tsunami of content coming. People have been predicting (in some cloistered circles) that Apple’s net worth could exceed Microsoft sometime in the next 3 to 5 years. That’s ENTIRELY reasonable. All the pieces are in place (or soon will be) for exactly that scenario. I say GOOD. Microsoft for all it’s power, money and control has really NEVER been about a good customer experience at any level. They have been about increasing and protecting their hegemony…which is what will kill them…It’s going to be awhile of course…but watch for Exchange to come to the XServe. That will be the first bell in the Microsoft death watch.

MDN secret word MILITARY as in the flanking manuver gets ’em every time.

  3. OK…I looked at vugo…One hour of video and it’s positioned as a kids toy with cartoons from Nickelodeon. It’s made by Hasbro. I’m sure it is probably a fine product but it doesn’t quite make it in a couple respects.
    1. Getting content to it is not as simple as doing a download from ITMS.
    2. It’s a big unit, like a PSP. For those who prefer a smaller size (which is most people… this unit won’t work.

Can you see a guy in a suit on the train or bus holding this thing up with both hands and watching it? Then trying to stuff it into his briefcase?
Or a woman trying to put this in a purse? Not gonna happen. There’s a sweet spot of compromise between screen size, player size, capacity, battery life, and overall look. Apple found it.

MDN secret word CLEAR…as in it’s clear the Ipod with video is kicking every other company’s ass this time around.

  4. I did the same thing as he did with the Lost episodes.

Downloaded them all, after I saw the first show of the 2nd year. I was hooked, and had to find out what went on the 1st year. Glad that I had iTunes. I could watch them – well, at that time I didn’t have the video iPod at the time – now I do, however, I still wouldn’t watch them on it.

But, I did Dl all the first season – watch them on my Mac at home – very convenient – then, now with my video iPod, I DLed all of the episodes on to it, and bring it over to my parents place – hook it up to the TV using RC cables and watch the season that way! Works great!

  5. scoodog, thanks for the admonishment, but I really wasnt trying to promote anything, just wondered if there was actually a need, or if its as absurd as I thought it was

  6. In other news, a quick check of the top-selling MP3 players on Amazon.com (updated “hourly”) shows the following amazing information:

Apple’s iPod still dominates the Top 10, placing 7 of the top 10 positions…

despite the fact that 4 of those 7 iPods are NOT IN STOCK!

In other words, people would rather wait for however long it takes Amazon to get more iPods than ship them an iRiver or a Zen that’s in stock right now!

Damn, that’s a lock on the market, people. It’s days before Christmas, most of their iPods are sold out, and Amazon still sells more of what it DOESN’T have than what it does.

MW: getting – as in “I’m not GETTING an iPod for Christmas, but whenever it gets here is fine with me.”

  7. To “just curious”-

i have no idea what scoodog is talking about… MDN is known for off topic rants on the message board (see any page that has anything to do with politics, or better yet, see how politics ends up in pages that have nothing to do with politics).

Regarding MacScan, as far as I know it is impractical to pay for a program like that, as there are 0 viruses in the wild for mac. However, since OSX and its Unix shell isn’t invincible (just more so than Windows and DOS) a time when such a program is practical may soon be upon us.

I imagine Apple will start making its own virus scan software once it becomes necessary.

  8. Give me “Firefly”!!!!

And (since it seems to be a theme today), in other news, today Serenity is #1 for DVD’s on Amazon! ! ! ! ! ! !

This movie ROCKS. Get it. You won’t be disappointed.

  9. just curious,

You’ll find self-appointed moderators everywhere. To answer your question, yes, it is absurd and useless on a Mac. Worse than useless, it ties up memory, storage, and CPU time that could be used for productive work.

  10. Zake, Dank:
The software Just Curious is talking about is for Spyware.

You’re right that we don’t need another virus package (at least not yet) but there seems to be some need for the Spyware package.
I just checked it out and it also looks for Spyware that the user might have mistakenly installed on to their computer.

Please check out the site and read the description.
It free for a 15 day trial.
And no I’m not working for them, I happen to read about it on another post and it caught my attention after all of the issues with Sony’s rootkit for OSX.

  11. Just Curious,

Spyware, just the same as Virus, does not affect Mac platform. All Java-based spyware can be purge by using the browser “clear all info” to discard of any trackable web info such as history and cookies.

there are programs that can be downloaded without your knowledge to your PC but these programs are built for MS. Does not affect Mac.

Save your money. buy an new iPod instead.

  12. I’ve just bought myself a 30GB iPod and Etymotic earplugs after years of hesitation, and I’m delighted.
I don’t use the video function but the journey to and from work, through a cold and grey Berlin winter, has been transformed.
The traffic, metro and crowd noise has gone – replaced by sweet music in excellent quality.

  13. “Watching ‘Lost’ on the bus next to a large man working his way through a crinkly bag of nuts is a deeply satisfying media experience.”

Glad he likes his iPod but does he have to insult large men?

  14. “Glad he likes his iPod but does he have to insult large men?”

LOL – for all he knows, it might have been St Nicholas, Father Christmas or Santa Claus on his way to work..!

And ‘just curious’, I agree that there is no restriction that I am aware of on MDN – so I reckon you should post away… On the point of antivirus software for Mac, the ONLY justification for using it would be if you were in some way publishing or doing emails, or ciculating MS Office docs were its possible you could accidentally pass on a Windows or Office macro virus to your Windows customers. Some argue we all should, but that’s rubbish.

  15. “”Watching ‘Lost’ on the bus next to a large man working his way through a crinkly bag of nuts is a deeply satisfying media experience.”

Glad he likes his iPod but does he have to insult large men?”

you should get a nano or shuffle and get “unlarge”
