Apple’s discontinued iPod mini remains a hot holiday gift despite rising prices

“Some consumers haven’t been so quick to move away from one of last year’s hot gifts: the iPod mini. Even though Apple discontinued the mini in September and replaced it with the nano, these fans have been reluctant to take the mini off their gift lists — and they’re willing to pay top dollar to nab one,” Michelle Meyers reports for CNET News. “Patrick McHenry of Eerie, Pennsylvania, for example, just bought a pink 4GB mini, which holds 1,000 songs, on eBay for $275 (£155). That’s $76 over the original $199 price tag. But it’s also less than McHenry would have paid at Compu-America — one of the few electronics retailers with the mini in stock. The store is selling the same model for $349. And sellers on Amazon are listing prices for the 4GB mini at more than $400.”

“So why would anyone pay so much for a mini when they could buy the smaller and (most would say) technologically superior 4GB nano for $249, or even the new 30GB video iPod, which holds 7,500 songs, for $299? In McHenry’s case, it was to fulfill the Christmas wish of his friend’s girlfriend. ‘She had her heart set on an iPod mini mainly because they are discontinued, so not many people would have them,’ he said,” Meyers reports.

  1. I love my green Mini, the metal feels great.
I treat it roughly with no protection and it hasn’t scratched in the year I’ve had it. It doesn’t need to be babied.
Will the Mini return with a bigger, colour screen?
    Here’s hoping!

  2. The brushed metal case of the mini is vastly superior to the plastic & polished steel of the iPod, IMHO. The rounded edges also look better. I bought a new vPod, but will never get rid of my mini. It also has the superior FireWIre abiliities that the new ‘Pods lack.

  3. I love my mini. In my opinion the outer design of the mini is the best design apple has come up with for an iPod. It takes hell of a beating and shows little scratching in my experience (I’ve had two so far). It was also very accessory friendly with it’s flat top.

MDN MW: “record” – The record companies are the antichrist!

  5. I think many people just don’t realize the differences between ipods as well as may think the newer one is mainly a video player and not for music. Anotherwards, the everage customer is uninformed??

  6. I wouldn’t pay extra for one, but I’d take one as a gift any day ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

iPods aren’t like computers: they don’t become obsolete!

  7. today saw some nanos for the first time in a shop here in berlin today. they were so scratched it was ridicolous. my mini after 18 month of use and in my pocket without protection has no scratches. my panasonic digicam and my sony-ericsson mobile also.

they were so scratched… they looked like someone was scratching it with a neddle 1000 times. they looked unbelievable. how can they sell something like that?

  8. I’ve got a mint 1st generation iPod. I ordered the day it was announced, so it’s one of the first ever made.

    I’ll let it go for $500 to the first lucky collector who responds. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  9. I’ve got two of them.

One first Gen in GOLD (Very rare), and a new Silver 6G.

After I saw the 2 day old Nano’s at the Apple store looking like they had been skipped across the parking lot a couple of dozen times, the decision to buy the much more durable Mini was a no brainer.

Got the last brand new Silver in 6G in my area and was grateful I acted when I did!

Glad to see they are gaining value in the marketplace!

  10. the minis are cool, very durable.

but i never liked how they were always cold, i know it sounds petty, but they are always cold. there screen was also on the small side. my sister and cousin both have first gen 4GB minis, they both have had to get them replaced because of battery issues.

i think battery issues really come down to nothing more than luck. i never had a problem with my first gen original iPod, i still to this day get 8+ hours with it. heres hoping my new 60 gig holds up just as well.

  11. Forget eBay. Overstock.com still sells Apple refurbished iPod minis. I picked up a silver 6GB for only $179 this week and it looks brand new. With the 18 hour battery life and durable scratch resistant metal body, I much prefer it to the nano. Plus the 6GB is enough to hold my entire music library, whereas the 4GB max on the nano is not.

  12. I’ve had a mini for 3 years and it’s fallen off my house, fallen down the sairs, and also left outside all night in the snow, and lets not for get my brother running it over with his bike my silver mini is still in the same condition I bought it in.
