Fox executive says company open to a deal with Apple iTunes Store

Fox Filmed Entertainment is open to a deal with Apple Computer’s iTunes music and video service, its co-chairman said Thursday. “Of course, we’d be open to that. We believe it would be a great opportunity,” James Gianopulos said at the Reuters Media and Advertising Summit, according to a Reuters report.

  1. Fox is my favourite network.

    Consider:

Arrested Development- Best sitcom ever. Now cancelled. By Fox.

Family Guy- Amazing show. Hilarious. Got cancelled. By Fox. Then brought back. By Fox.

Firefly- One of the best shows ever in my opinion. Cancelled by Fox because of low ratings that were entirely Fox’s fault for not marketing and airing it properly.

Futurama- I never watched this much, but what I saw was good and I’ve heard good things about it. Cancelled. By Fox.

And yet, they keep running all this reality TV stuff.

    Go Fox, yeah!

MDN MW: Family, as in “Family Guy is awesome”

  2. Fox is good for a few laughs, especially that comedian (what’s his name) – O’Really? Then there’s that cowhand chainsawing the underbrush while aides toss leaves and pebbles in the air (for effect). He’s the only one in the party who has rolled up sleeves, no tie, no sunglasses; the only one nut rubbernecking the media nervously.

  3. Hmmm …

Rumors of an uber Mac Mini with DVR capability hits the wires.

Days of analysis ensue, where the consensus generally is that with video on iTMS stagnant, selling home media centers with straight up DVR capability is the only viable option left for Apple to make money. Their success is predicted.

Recognition dawns across the content industry, that a hugely popular Apple device that saves & serves A/V media for FREE is a much bigger money loser for them than just cutting a deal with Apple to distribute those same shows for a fee. Even if it does mean losing some control over the business plan.

In short order, one of the biggest media companies in the world (FOX), both a movie studio with really hot properties (StarWars) and a full fledged broadcast and cable TV operation, starts making ‘nice-nice’ sounds about cutting a deal with Apple after all.

    Coincidence? I think not. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cool smirk” style=”border:0;” />

PS – It should also be noted that FOX is one of the few studios that hasn’t acknowledged setting up any sort of online distribution alternative (alone or in partnership). So their being a little behind the 8-Ball no doubt had a hand in this too.

What’s impressive about all this is that in a matter of a few months, Apple’s activities – both real (the move into online video distribution) and suspected (a DVR home media device) – has instigated enormous changes in two industries. Apple’s online distribution put the spurs to similar plans by content providers themselves, which in turn got the monopolistic cable industry to seriously consider what was once unthinkable – ala carte channel pricing.

And the content providers figured their own online efforts effectively put the kibosh on Apple ever being as big in their industry the way they have been in audio. But now here comes the threat of an Apple-branded DVR, and we see at least one major player amongst those studios abandoning freezing Apple out of content in short order. Of course, if iTMS’s video offerings are further strengthened, that only makes it more impossible for cable not to offer ala carte pricing.

It’s the Viscious Circle at it’s worst for these guys, no? I love it!

  4. I’m probably reading far too much into the phrasing, but he said “we’d be open” – “WE’D” means “we would” in this context (“we had” would be grammatically incorrect). He didn’t say “we’re” = “we are” so…

    ___”we’d be open” — but Apple hasn’t approached us…

___”we’d be open” — but the deal fell through…

___”we’d be open” — but negotiations are closed and a deal will be announced shortly…

In other words, I don’t think much can be said aside from excluding the possibility that they’re presently negotiating… and only if you take the statement (perhaps too) literally and precisely.

Aside: Fox News and Fox Entertainment are two separate but related critters. I personally dislike the former (I consider them biased and think O’Reilly is an over-rated buffoon like many of their “commentators”) and am neutral about the entertainment side. Then again, I unplugged my television three years ago and my impressions are formed by reading on the net and watching short clips.

Regardless, what I or anyone else thinks of Fox (either division) isn’t really relevant. A large enough number of people like them to make iTMS distribution worthwhile for Apple, and having a broader range of product where your inventory costs are nil I can’t see as a bad thing. The same applies to Rush Limbaugh (who apparently is an Apple fan and user himself) – I dislike him and his message, but business is business.

People on the right end of the political spectrum would be whining if Michael Moore offered outakes or extra footage from F/911 on iTMS, and they’d be wrong too.

  5. Dave the cook,

I don’t know what you’ve got cooking in your kitchen, but over here in the UK there is Sky TV, owned by the same people or person – Rupert Murdoch called News Corp.

So since that guy from Fox is saying that and he is supposed to be an executive that same or similar soundings must be going around News Corp or he better be working on his Resume/CV!

At that level and to be saying such things should that turn out to be unofficial or if there is a directive to avoid discussions about Apple’s iTunes – and I hope not, sure, but if so then he’s in for some serious doo doo!

Since I also operate within a company at an executive level I know that you have to follow the company line and if you don’t like it there are channels to air your opinions which is always kept behind closed doors, protocol demands that and certainly excludes talking to the media about it like Reuters!

I hope that News Corp do actually talk to Apple about offering content via iTunes and no I do not think content from Fox News or Sky News will be made available say as a news snippet, hardly worth paying for as by the next day it is old hat and not worth watching at a later date or several times.

Steve Jobs or his interviews post Keynote’s tend to be aired on MSNBC or its national/international affiliates and NBC is not owned by News Corp as NBC Universal to give its full parent title is 80%-owned by General Electric, with 20% controlled by Vivendi Universal.

  6. I need to get in my word too:

    Fox sucks…big dog balls.

    They cancelled Arrested Development. Assholes.

Now the only thing funny to watch on that network is Fox News. Bill O’Reilly is a funny Nancy-man. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

WHY WOULD YOU OFF SUCH A GREAT SHOW? YOU SUCK NOW, FOX!
