Security flaw discovered in some Apple iTunes versions

“A critical vulnerability has been found in some versions of Apple’s popular iTunes that could allow attackers to remotely take over a user’s computer, according to a warning issued Thursday by a security research firm,” Dawn Kawamoto reports for CNET News. “The discovery of this latest flaw comes days after Apple issued its iTunes 6 for Windows security update. The latest iTunes flaw, however, runs on all operating systems from Windows XP to Mac OS X, according to a security warning issued by eEye Digital Security. This flaw allows malicious hackers to launch arbitrary code remotely, which in turn can take control of a user’s computer.”

“eEye does not provide extensive details on the flaws it finds until a vendor releases a patch to resolve the security flaw,” Kawamoto reports.

  1. Well how about that as this is what the same source listed earlier

    Operating Systems Affected:
    All Platforms

    Now it says:
    Operating Systems Affected:
    All Microsoft <Operatins> Systems

I smell a tamper with the website after all only a real loony spells like that!

  2. Holy Crap people!

Go read the linked article – they have issued a correction – so far the exploit is only verified for Windows machines – they are still testing to see if Macs are affected.

I did Google for this, and I have only found older vulernabilities (Jan 05 and older) so far.

  3. Oh gee. Another vulnerability on Windows systems.

It would seem that even Apple has a hard time writing software that accesses the internet on a Winblows system without some security flaw popping up.

The only safe Winblows system is one that is still in the factory shipping box.

  4. Hey BUAHAHAHAHA:

It only seems to bother widows machines, hmm.

I find that interesting and just can’t help saying:

    BUAHAHAHAHA

Delmyra: Please do boycott Apple. If you refuse enlightenment, you deserve to muddle through darkness.

Reality Check: Our skepticism comes from years of history. Last I heard there were almost 100,000 proven exploits in Windows (of course, they may not all be virus or trojan malware and I’m sure some of these are duplications on different flavors of Windows (man, I hope!)) but the fact remains that there are zero proven virus or trojan exploits on OS X. If you tell me Windows is insecure, it’s like telling me the sun rose in the east this morning. Tell me the sun is trekking from L.A. to N.Y., and you may as well be trying to convince me Macs are as insecure as PCs.

macjammer: I’m telling you… Don’t believe the hype.

theloniousMac: I always figured you for a really good guy. I enjoy your posts and find you to be very even handed and cool headed. I always felt you must be a decent person and an OK guy to hang with. But after the whole ABBA thing… Man only a sicko would come up with that.

PS- I got the word so I have to do it…

MW “ones” As in… Here’s to the crazy

  5. Just what the world needs: Yet another protection racket!

I love their line that says, “Software Affected:
    Various Apple iTunes versions”
Oh, the precision is mind numbing!

  6. Wow, I go away for a few hours and what do I find upon my return?

A new MDN thread about how this is only a Windows issue and not a single peep from the trolls in the above thread.

In a way I feel sorry for y’all trolls. First you are stuck with Windows, then you can’t seem to see a better way. You spend all your time on a Mac news site (when you aren’t busy trying to clean the latest virus/trojan/adware/spyware crap off of an (sorry to point this out) egregiously ugly computer.

You sit back and pray to Uncle Bill to please let some of Windows POSness rub off on a Mac, any Mac, anywhere. Finally your big news comes in and you put down the joystick and Cheetos long enough to flame a bunch of Mac users who take a break from making out with hot women and creating greatness on the most stunningly attractive and capable computers ever made so they can point out how sad you are.

Within minutes these Mac-ists decimate your posts, laugh at you (or with you if it makes you feel better) and prove how pathetic your system is. All the while extending the hand of friendship and imploring you to try the better way.

Hours later all the proof is there in a headline fairly screaming that once again, it’s Windows that has the problem. That must suck. Bad.

No wonder y’all are wound so tight.

If you don’t want to be happy, hang out at a Windows user forum (all those people are miserable last I checked) because we are pretty much enjoying life here in Mac-land. If you want to stay, don’t be surprised if you catch flack.

And don’t be surprised if you start wondering what it would be like to work on a Mac. We won’t tell anyone (we haven’t told about your iPod or your big poster of the Window Developer’s Conference with Steve photoshopped in next to Bill) and there might be hope for you yet.

  7. That’s it. This makes me see the light for good.
I am ditching my old PC and get a Mac. Let’s get real Windows fellas.
We more and more make the fool of ourselves. This last thing is the last straw: it truly gets old now this trying to prove the Mac is just as Windows at every chance we get to be debunked in HOURS.

Sorry all, but it is frankly idiotic. The games I play are on the Mac, the sw I use is on the Mac. I decided it was time to ditch viruses and malware: Going to an Apple store this weekend!

MDN work “final”. Isn’t that scary?!

  8. exTroll

Good for you! This is the time when you are most vulnerable. Like crabs in a pot of rapidly warming water, your PC counterparts are going to try to pull you back in and take you down with them.

    Resist.

You can do this. If you start feeling like you are backsliding, just call and talk to one of the great Switcher Counselors at 1-800-MAC-CULT.

Don’t let the number frighten you (it’s just a coincidence).

    ~M ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />

  9. Is that for real? I mean, 1-800-MAC-CULT . Been at the Apple store for first time – feel silly and dumb: it is a great place. Wonder why it took so long.

MDN word is “finally”. I wonder whether Macs are even cognitive machines ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  10. exTroll

No that’s not the real number. Just a joke. Mac users are often referred to as a cult.

I switched almost 2 years ago and I couldn’t be happier with the decision. The real place to go with questions about Macs and how to use them, or if you’re looking for advice on what kind would be right for you is the support forums at Apple.com.

    Good luck.

    ~M
