Report: Apple to launch video iPod next week

“Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos… Reliable sources believe the iPod could be introduced as early as next week, possibly around the time Apple releases results from its fourth fiscal quarter of 2005,” Kasper Jade reports for Apple Insider. “…sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple’s 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner [and features] a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano’s, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.”

Jade reports, “The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a ‘major update’ to Apple’s iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.”

  1. I am 12 and I use F.C.P. to edit my movies on. I have a 20GB iPod Photo and the iTunes phone. I want to get rid of my iPod, but now I see this video iPod. CRAP. I am broke. Spent it all on the phone. Hopefully get one for X-mas and I will also dump my shuffle. I NEED A G5. I have a powerbook and new eMac. The eMac is having some major problems!

  2. Nice link Spark. Exactly. IF there is going to be a video iPod, it would be useless to make it fit “old” NTSC standards, or to have a tiny screen. The thing would have to use a smaller wheel AND be used sideways, like the PSP.

  3. whatever it is, certainly it will not be good enough and people will whine like babies

The video may be able to be shown on the teenie tiny screen that it will include, but, the better use for it will be to hook it to a tv and play the video there.

  4. I wouldn’t think much of a video iPod, but the Sony PSP is getting excellent sales of UMD versions of movies for it. Newsweek reports that at least a couple of movies, not including Spiderman, have sold over 100K copies in 1-2 months. It took 9 months to sell 100K copies of a DVD movie (some Harrison Ford flick got the honors) when they debuted many years ago.

So there is some desire to watch on a small screen, if the device is small enough to carry like even a PSP. And the iPod will be smaller and its 40 or 80 GB hard drive will certainly be better than carrying UMDs.

  5. BFD,
I felt the samw way about the iPod. Was upset they hadn’t resurrected the Nweton like the rumors claimed. I swore I’d never own one, bought the first model the day they were released and have bought one for each of my kids. Lets see what happens first.

  6. “How about a little teeny tiny DLP projector that uses one of these superbright white LEDs. Project a 30-50 inch wide image. Make it not much bigger than the iPod.”

An LED projecting a 30-50inch wide image??? That’s idiotic! Even starlight would wash it out!

Where do these morons keep coming from, anyhow????

  7. Just rethought all this:

They will launch a video iPod (for music videos) because together with the nano, the entire market segment is redone. Video capability (and iTunes-available videos) with the mosst stylish, teeny-tiny player with iTunes. That means that Apple has the lead for a LONG time as the rest play catch up on multiple fronts.

    Wow…

  8. what if it is a video iPod that the nano can plug into like a pc card? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    Anyway, I want a nanobook.

MW year as in Year of HD

  9. I’m not sure there’s any significant market for handheld video players. Music players in your pocket is one thing – you can get on and do stuff (exercise, cycle, drive, work, etc, etc) whilst listening to your music. But video demands 100% attention. If I’m going to sit down and watch a movie, I want more than a 2″ screen. Otherwise, I’d rather read a book and listen to some music…

  10. If you would like to rip DVD’s, the software name is “handbreak.” Handbreak is free, but not that good. You can not pick when to start and stop. DVDxDV is not free, but much better. Jhym is a program where you can strip the righs off an iTunes music download so that you can transfer your music to more then 5 users. Just a fun fact. All illegal though. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
    MW: amount

  11. I predict…

The iPod Video will have major battery life issues on some models just like the nano had with the screen. Also, the screen will freeze on occasion for all users and for some the screen may fail to start up commpleatly… (spelled that wrong)… I know this will happen for a fact.
    MDMW- series

  12. ‘m not sure there’s any significant market for handheld video players

Like i said.. once more podcasts get video content, you’ll be able to sift through a wide variety of news reports and sports highlights on your ipod.. and it’s free.. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    (for now)
