RUMOR: Apple prepping new ad campaign focusing on Macs

“According to one unverified report, Apple has completed filming a new series of advertisements promoting the Macintosh platform. Recent analyst comments have speculated that Apple would proceed with heavy ad campaign focusing on Macs. Indeed, Apple has drawn criticism from users about the lack of Mac and Mac OS X based advertisements in recent years,” arn reports for MacRumors.

Rumors are that Apple may specifically focus the campaign’s concept on Windows users who have switched to the Mac after purchasing an iPod, “articulating the ‘iPod Halo Effect,'” arn writes.

Last week, we reported that a note on the Apple website currently reads: “Got an iPod, then bought a Mac? Did you love your iPod so much that you decided to buy a Mac? How did your Mac change the rest of your life? … We want your personal story of your move to Mac – what you do with it and how it’s made your life all around better.”

  1. As a windows user that has fallen in love with Apple and the Mac platform, I have to agree that ads of the design and hardware are not the thing Apple has to do.

It IS OS X that sets the Mac platform appart.

It is the iLife suite of software that is UNMATCHED in the WINTEL world.

No doubt that the hardware is also unmatched in the WINTEL world, however in the end I have a computer to USE it, the fact it is put together so well, an looks so damn good is a bonus.

    My 2 cents.

    Luke

  2. While watching the “Everybody Loves Raymond” finale, I saw the M$ ad during the commercial break. To be honest it sounded like a Mac add with a girl (an ugly one at that) talking about, and I’m paraphrasing, how she can create music and videos on her laptop running winblows.

I mean WTF! really WTF! Why can’t Apple create such a commercial for Macs running Tiger?

  3. “According to one unverified report” is the equivalent of Longhorn being Microsoft’s latest operating system.

If Apple is about to advertise Tiger outside of the Mac community it is long overdue.

I also sincerely hope they really spend up big on advertising. For example I’d like to see Apple ads in prime time rather when Star Trek or some other science fiction (SF) program is on TV. Even though I have a soft spot for SF I also admit to the genre not mainstream.

I’d like to see ads during programs like Sixty Minutes, CSI etc. Apple needs to get the message to the mainstream and that’s how you sell products.

Of course there is a risk to such a strategy and that is what happens if an advertising campaign doesn’t work? The Microsoft supporters will be baying for blood and Wall Street would respond accordingly.

Still, business is all about taking risks and market penetration is the Holy Grail. So go for broke Apple and let’s hope and pray that Apple’s success causes heartburn in Redmond.

  4. The real value of a Mac isn’t in it’s design. And it’s not in the feature of OSX either. It’s in the joy and fun and happiness that’s arising INSIDE of the user when he or she is USING a Mac.
Therefore an ad for a mac should be build around and communicate this unique and ultimate feeling. It’s not a rational thing, folks! (I know, that you know, but does Apple Marketing, those guys that presumably never touched a Windows-PC and therefore have no clue about the dark side?)

  5. I hope they aren’t just a bunch of preachy testimonials- aka “switcher” ads- AGAIN. SHOW a Mac and OSX in action and SHOW how and why it is so much better than Windows. Then tie that in with how it changed someone’s life. Don’t rely on the masses to simply just “get it” because someone who does simply said so. They’ve been using Windows for years- they obviously don’t “get it”. They need to be shown the way.

  6. Has anyone considered that Apple’s retail stores might be considered a form of advertising? Certainly these stores give the company and its products genuine visiblity where, five years ago, there was none. In my view, the stores should be taken into consideration by anyone criticizing the company for its advertising strategy. Plus, with all the good press the company’s been getting lately (iPod success, Tiger, virus-free OS, iLife and other software), maybe the company is not as dumb as critics seem to think. It’s simply investing elsewhere.

  7. Just have 2 guy working on their computor sitting next to each other. One is happy getting things done! The other is yelling, whining, cussing, & crying at his computor.
    Enough said!!!

  8. I think they need to focus on iLife…perhaps do a commercial that focuses on Garageband. There are lots and lots of aspiring musicians, young and old that would really get excited about a recording studio bundled with their new Mac. I just now saw a Microsoft commercial with a girl talking about how much she loves creating music…blah blah blah…something about a recording studio on her pc…blah blah blah. Well of course Windows XP doesn’t ship with recording studio software and we all know that. Macs do. Why won’t Apple tout this?

They need to focus on the fact that it all just works…right out of the box. These Windows XP commercials would lead me to believe that I could hop on the Dell express and blam-o…I’m hunting down constellations and discovering distant galaxies. What a disappointment when I get that Dell all setup and find that all I’ve got are some poopy photo management tools, some lukewarm games and a clunky jukebox app…and most of it’s shareware anyway. Oh wait, if I dig down far enough I might stumble upon Windows Movie Maker and oh what a joyful eXPerience that’s sure to be. Oh and hey…I’ve got MS Paint. ‘Nuff said.

Apple should do commercials that actually demonstrate the very real tools that ship with every Macintosh computer.
