“The Microsoft Xbox 360 unveiled Thursday night on MTV isn’t just a video game console. It’s version 2.0 in Bill Gates’ plan to take over your living room,” Dean Takahashi reports for Mercury News. “Beyond being a killer machine for gamers, the Xbox 360 makes good on the company’s original plan in 2001 to unleash a ‘Trojan horse.’ That is, consumers buy the console as a game box, but they use it for all sorts of digital entertainment. The Xbox 360 goes on sale in the fall but Microsoft has not revealed its price. ‘We are No. 1 out of the box with this next generation,’ said Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer in an interview with the Mercury News on Thursday. ‘That’s always an advantage. We’ve got a super product. We’ve got super momentum.'”

The trojan horse that Microsoft is about to unleash is the Mac as a gaming platform. I can’t wait to play Xbox games on my new 3 Ghz Power Mac.

Sneaky M$. They can’t call it XBox2 cuz Sony (with Apple’s assistance?!) will soon come out with PS3. I think the upcoming XBox 360 will succeed b/c M$ has copied the vertical, tightly-integrated hardware+OS model long followed by the Mac and applied it to the XBox. The XBox is their Mac! Apple needs to release a ” Mac OS Lite” version of their OS (perhaps called “Mac OS Jaguar for PowerPC processors”), so that a new generation can get used to the idea of supplanting an M$ OS in M$ hardward with an Apple OS.

The X-Box 360 is at it’s heart a stand-alone computer with a closed OS. I think it is interesting to note that the developer video says they picked the highest performance processor available for 2005 which happens to be an IBM PPC chip. The current X-Box uses a Pentium III type chip.

It’s become obvious that these guys are on a huge publicity seeking campaign because they have been SO surpassed by Apple in the good news stakes.

xbox is just a computer that´s not hooked up to a printer. xbox could potentially take business away from the computer makers….

so does this mean Apple will be able to play the Xbox 360 games? If so, that’s gonna be f-ing sweet.
Probably not. They surely have their own optimized OS for the PPC compiled for G5. If you were able to play the games, you’d have to have an emulator (slow, but probably not too bad) or to boot into their developer OS.
The issue is that the XBox 360 OS will want to control the hardware directly and is surely not based on the Mach kernel.
