Cisco VPN client support for Apple Mac OS X 10.4 ‘Tiger’ due in mid-May

“When Apple’s ‘Tiger’ operating system is released Friday, it will be without support for Cisco Systems’ VPN client,” Elizabeth Millard reports for eWEEK. “Cisco Systems Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. had been working to have VPN support available by the release date of Mac OS 10.4, but they were not able to get the work done in time, according to Pete Davis, product line manager for remote-access VPNs at Cisco.”

‘We had a goal of having the client operational by the time of the release, but the dates just didn’t line up,’ he said. But Cisco expects that support will be available by mid-May. Until then, Davis advises users who rely on Cisco VPNs to delay their upgrade plans until the support is in place,” Millard reports.

  1. I guess this means dual booting for a while.

I’d prefer that they make it work from Apple’s “Internet Connection” VPN settings, but they’ll probably make a kernal extension again so it breaks again in the future.

  2. Tiger also breaks Checkpoint VPN client.

Tiger also breaks VPN tracker client,

    Sez Equinux:

Notice: VPN Tracker and Mac OS X Tiger
In extensive tests we confirmed that Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has a bug that seriously affects the VPN performance. Depending on the actual application, the VPN throughput under Tiger is about 50-75% lower than under Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

Since the bug is in the Tiger kernel itself, equinux is not able to fix it. However, we’re closely working with Apple to deliver a fix soon.

    Conclusion:
Currently, we don’t recommend updating to Mac OS X Tiger when you rely on VPN access.

    No upgrade for me!
    (Sigh….it is a sweet OS)

  3. Great news! VPN Tracker 4.0 now works perfectly with Tiger! All problems have been fixed… I just upgraded both my OS X to Tiger and VPN Tracker to Version 4.0 and am completely satisfied.
