Why Windows PC users don’t care about design

Windows tech writer Paul Thurrott comments on HP’s first computer with a built-in spot for an iPod:

“OK, it’s HP, so the ‘dock’ isn’t all that elegant (apparently, the plastic cover can be swapped for one that fits HP cameras too), but it’s still interesting that Apple didn’t do something like this first.”

“Oh, and that computer is fricking cool looking, BTW.”

MacDailyNews Take: If that lump of mismatched plastic doors and components is “fricking cool looking,” then Dame Edna Everage is one hot babe. The only thing remotely “cool looking” about it is that they’ve got Apple’s light silver color matched pretty closely, they laid out the collection of 57 cheap-ass plastic parts neatly for the photo (how did they get that remote to stand up on it’s hind end?), and they left its very square screen black to spare us from the cartoonish Windows XP eyesore. It would seem that some Windows PC users don’t care about design, simply because they can’t tell the difference between the good and the bad. They’re “designblind.” And hideously so. A strong reason for Windows’ popularity perhaps?

Apple could hire the “designer” of this thing to go after the mass audience, except we don’t think these Wintel box assemblers have any designers on staff. Doing so would no doubt increase the sticker prices of their plastic lumps by one-tenth of a cent per unit, thereby costing them massive market share. This HP, like something from Gateway or Dell or other Wintel box assemblers, looks like something a random hardware engineer “designed” in order to keep the manufacturing and assembly costs as low as possible.

And look at that poor iPod perched up there like Julia Roberts atop Ed Asner. (Sorry, Ed). If Raymond Loewy wasn’t already dead, this HP setup’s image would surely kill him.

Save the aesthetically impaired, get them a Mac.

  1. Of course, the problem with Thurrott is that he is – all things considered – a man with no taste or foresight.

Consider the following choice predictions from Boston’s most deluded man…

    1) QuickTime MPEG-4 is doomed: only around a year ago, PT was stating that MPEG-4 was a “dog that just wouldn’t hunt” especially as a high-definition standard. Of course, the fact that MPEG-4 is the basis for 3GPP and thus the basis for video in the global mobile market is lost on Paul, and his coverage of high-definition seemed to stall when presented with the information that H.264 is actually MPEG-4 Layer 10 and it’s supported/mandated on at least as many platforms as Microsoft’s high-def equivalent.

    2) And Paul still needs to retract his famous “iPod mini is a failure” rants from last year. Paul appears to base some of his statements on the same kind of intelligence analysis that starts wars, along the lines of: “Apple won’t tell us how many iPod minis they’re selling so theyr’e obviously not selling that many” which is hysterically close to a mid-Seventies analysis of Russian military activity which summarised that “if you couldn’t see what the Russians were doing, they were obviously up to something huge in secret”.

Both analyses are, of course, bollocks – out of 10 million known iPods in the wild, it’s a fair bet that a minimum of 4 million are minis, and the Soviet Union was certainly busy in the Seventies building submarines with questionable safety records and reactors that were practically guaranteed to make anyone working near them grow at least one more head and a few fingers.

When all is said and done, Paul is a very sad man who thinks that his support for the Patriots and Red Sox qualifies him as some sort of prophet whereas the reality is that it probably makes him a masochist, because not only is he watching sports teams with a patchy record of success, but for five months he’s getting fscking cold as well.

  2. Maczealots are faggots that’s why they care religiously about the design of their overpriced toys. PC users have common sense knowing that a computer is just a tool which becomes obsolete in a 1-2 years anyways because the fast development of hardware (obviously it’s not about Macintoshes, where’s that 3GHz G5 desktop? LOL). So why to waste resources pimping up a box with a couple of silicone chips? Only Macfags care about this bullshit, just like little girls care about their Barbies LOL.

  3. Reality Check,

Are we supposed to cry over your taunt as if our panties are in bunch?

Gee, maybe I should ditch my Mac now. I feel so inadequate because of your post….

  4. Oi Reality Check, stop making excuses for having nothing but “UGLY” choices in your PC hardware and youre software. You want a PC? go ahead, truth is youre obviously too stupid too appreciate superior Apple products anyway. And talking about “Tools” just look in the reflection of your monitor next time your wacking off to kiddie porn.
    Mwaaahahahahaahaha.

“PC users have common sense knowing that a computer is just a tool which becomes obsolete in a 1-2 years anyways because the fast development of hardware.”

Funny how Macs seem to remain usable after those 1-2 years… hmmmmmmm….

If your PC is so good, why the heck are you in a Mac Forum trying to prove it to us?… You won’t earn my respect for owning a PC… Perhaps that’s why you’re here, to attempt to get attention and respect from Mac Users… It ain’t comming from me, that’s for sure.

I think you’re in the wrong bar son… (Grabs bottle)…

  6. That wasn’t me, that was some imposter. I’m only upset because I can’t afford anything any nicer than a $349 Dell shitbox to go with my Dell DJ. Maybe one of these days I’ll be able to collect enough quarters in the local fountain to be able to buy myself a real computer and a real iPod. Of course, if I actually could hold a job, that would help…

  7. PC users would mind for aesthetics or for many founctionnalities if they actually bought their computers. Unfortunately for PC users, their machines are bought by management, IT service or other careless seniors employees who 1) don’t care about quality, aesthetics or ease of use; 2) bother only about up front price (and don’t even know what total cost of operation may mean); 3) often even don’t use a computer very often themselves; 4) want to maitain the staff at the higher possible level (number not quality) by insuring the crap they buy (and force others to use) will break often enough.
When the real users buy a computer for the home they buy the same kind of crap they have at the office because they don’t know better, they want to stay compatible with the office and are fed FUD all day long.

  8. (They’re “designblind.” And hideously so.)

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

MDN take a look at your own web site as a design standard. Whoever “designed” this site is also totally “designblind. And hideously so”.

    What a hipocrite.

  9. Hey Krazy, Now that you’ve proved your the idiot tell me, what is TCO again?

    1) don’t care about quality, aesthetics or ease of use

Thats funny, My systems costs almost $5000.00 (built over 2 yrs)

    2) bother only about up front price (and don’t even know what total cost of operation may mean)

TCO – Total cost of ownership means alot of things, To the average home user, it means nothing really. To a business it means alot, and Windows TCO has actually improved over the past 2-3 yrs

    3) often even don’t use a computer very often themselves..Actually, most users who buy a system, already have one. Or use one 8 hrs a day at work.

    4) want to maitain the staff at the higher possible level (number not quality) by insuring the crap they buy (and force others to use) will break often enough.

Hmm, we’ve downsized I.T. to about 1 tech per 500 workstations, Windows doesnt break as often as you would think. Most of the time, windows problems are contributed to poor memory or faulty hardware, Poor programming on the part of internal dev’s or third party dev’s

“When the real users buy a computer for the home they buy the same kind of crap they have at the office because they don’t know better, they want to stay compatible with the office and are fed FUD all day long.”

Hmm. unfortunately, I use DULL at work, At home its another story, I would never put a Dull in my home.

You sound like the brightest bulb in the knife drawer.

And the real funny thing is your email. if its really KK@hotmail.com, Thats funny.

    Pretty much a true statement.

TCO- how much does it cost the home user in time & frustration dealing with viruses & malware, keeping the damn thing running properly? Do you actually think that most home users or office users for that matter know anything about cleaning there systems up? Most home users will have to pay someone to handle that chore. Most people are not you. Windows total cost of ownership has improved…to what? Don’t fully understand what you are comparing here. Windows to Windows? Yeah okay.

Then why use them in a work environment? Again, most people are not you they do not build their own systems & barely know how to use those systems. Is it stupidity…no. They just have other things to do or be interested in. That’s life. Pull your head out of your ass.

  11. Even though this is why windows welcomes viruses, people buy it because it works with almost anything software wise.So that’s a much more common reason than what nosense said. You have to give windoze SOME credit. It’s not like it’s a total bomb of an OS.Although Bill Gates does always try to put the mac platform down because he’s jealous the master is beating the apprientice.Again and agian.
