Apple Macs with ‘transparent desktops’ are the latest craze

“Mac users have always been focused on aesthetics, and the latest craze to sweep the web merely reinforces that impression,” Wil Harris writes for The Inquirer.

“Transparent screens are the name of the game. That’s not some fancy new technology, in fact, it’s very simple technology imaginatively applied,” Harris writes.

“There’s something new in the crowded world of desktop pictures, as can be seen on our forum’s photo section. Take a shot of what’s behind your screen, set it as a desktop picture and then carefully align your computer so that the screen seems transparent,” MacBidouille reports.

You really have to see some of these to believe them. Check out MacBidouille’s growing “Ecrans Transparents” (Transparent Screens) gallery here.

MacDailyNews Note – Software we use: BTW, TransparentDock 2.2 is an application from Free Range Mac (shareware/donationware – registration is not required for basic functionality) that allows customization of the Mac OS X dock.

The transparency level of the dock is fully adjustable, from fully transparent to fully opaque, or somewhere in between. An assortment of options are available to enhance the appearance & functionality of the dock, and each can be applied independently, or combined into a theme. A fully customizeable palette allows saving & switching between an unlimited number of custom dock themes. As always, built-in reset options allow returning the dock to its original state.

  1. Besides all the other wonderful benefits of Camino, it seems to defeat MDN popunders with no special software required. Just click the box for “don’t allow popups”.

I’m not threadjacking. This is a stupid thread.

  2. These “transparent screens” are rather impressive once you consider the selection of lens and matching the color temp of the screen with the environment (some photographers managed this better than others). I did something like this years ago as a gag. I took a photo of the inside of a CRT monitor without the tube. I then overlaid a bullet hole in glass that I had on file and used the composite as the desktop. My co-worker did a double-take when it looked like someone had shot his monitor.

  3. still getting pop under. even with the f*@!&%$# recommended links.

magic word:”history”. as in: keep getting f(*#%^ pop unders from this site and i’m history

  4. Y’know, I find people telling me about their magic words much more annoying than MDN’s popunders. But then, I went to the opt-out page and took care of it instead of griping like a whiny bitch, so I haven’t seen a popunder in weeks.

Hey, MDN, could you make the magic words obscure like “zephyr” or “mauve”? Maybe then people will stop trying to be cute by making sentences with them.
