RUMOR: new and updated iPod, iPod mini models coming Wednesday?

“One day before Apple is expected to announce new iPod minis, a reliable source has shed light on Apple’s Wednesday announcement, suggesting that almost the entire iPod line could see an update then,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

Kats reports on a possible color-screen 6GB iPod mini with six new colors making their debut and reports that two new iPods could debut Wednesday for $349 and $449 as well. “Unknown is whether the new price points will represent the fifth-generation of iPods or if they are a sequential update and price cut to the existing iPods; we suspect the latter,” Katz reports. “Resellers have recently reported extremely tight stock of the 40GB iPod and iPod photos models, suggesting updates are in store. Unknown at this time is what will become of the $299 20GB iPod.”

  1. In the meantime, New York City has apparently run completely dry of iPod shuffles. My nephew went to the Prince Street Apple Store yesterday and was told “No shuffles until next weekend at the earliest” and he probably wouldn’t find a single shuffle anywhere else in the city either.

He said the store was jam packed with customers, many of whom appeared to be switchers buying their first Macs.

Magic Work — “suddenly” — as in suddenly the whole world wants a Mac.

  2. Can anybody see a reason to think that this new iPod will be able to interact with Airport Express, as a remote control? Are Bluetooth and Wifi interoperable?

Otherwise i just don’t see the great need for this. What will it work with, other than for a handful of car stereos? Broadcasting will only work with Bluetooh headphones, and how many people own those?

  3. “Why isn’t this being saved for a MAC Expo?”

Because really, really, REALLY Great Stuff is coming at the WWDC in June. This is just something to keep the fire stoked.

  4. To Wipeout:

They aren’t saving it for the next Mac Expo because the next one is in July – and Apple is most likely not going to it. The one after is Apple expo Paris – Sept 20-24 this year.

Besides, Apple has said that they are going to be moving announcements to random times in the year, rather than waiting for big expos.
