“Despite Bill Gates’ announcement of new partnerships with LG, Discovery Channel and many others, his dream, of a Media Center where all media can be controlled with one remote and shared among all possible devices, will come true but not for Microsoft,” Frank Ottink writes for YEALD. “So far the only company who has control over most aspects and has proven that it can pull together the parties is of course Apple with the iPod/iTunes combination.”
Ottink writes, “I’m not sure, but like many others, I suspect the rumored below $500 Q88 or ‘headless’ iMac, will be the first step of Apple to create a seamless media experience. The fact that it is headless makes it very suitable to become a TiVo like Personal Video Recorder sitting under or on top of a TV. Add some nifty Media Center software, connectivity to the iPod, the house network, and the internet, preferably wireless, and you have the perfect Media Center solution without having to buy a new high-end Media Center PC. “
“Just connect it to your existing PC or Mac and you have the best of both worlds a dedicated workstation anywhere in the house connected to a dedicated media center in the family living room sharing whatever media they have stored on them without wires. To make it all worthwhile for Apple, assure that with the remote control, songs and videos can be bought, downloaded and/or streamed. The users then have access to all the media they want,” Ottink writes. “If Apple would succeed in achieving this it certainly will attract a lot of first time Mac buyers and can take a large byte out of the Media Center market away from Microsoft, just as it did with the iPod and iTunes in the portable audio and on-line music market. This will eat into Microsoft’s and the related hardware vendors’ market share as the Media Center is one of the few growth drivers left in the PC business. On top of that it will convert more buyers completely to the Mac platform further reducing Microsoft’s overall market share.”

Apple vs. Microsoft rivalry heats up again – January 10, 2005
Wow, what weird universe are we in? People actually speaking of Microsoft’s share of the world decreasing? It is fantastic that people are speaking this way – giving Apple mainstream ‘credibility’.
Whoa. Imagine a Windows-based entertainment center. Honey, how about a nice evening curled up on the couch in front of the blue screen of death.
Yeah, but the “blue screen of death” does not happen much anymore
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> hahaha…
lol, Microsoft can’t even make a reliabe OS, so why should we trust them with our Digital Lifestyles? I can’t imagine anything worse than sitting with my wife in front of a Micro$oft ‘Digital Media Center (sic)’, waiting for my subscription to be authenticated, then a reboot cause my authentication failed, then a virus stops me from playing my music, then a piece of spyware steals my subscription info, so I call Micro$oft support and they say it’ll take 3 days to process a new account. By the time my new account arrives and I put Barry White on, my Wife has run off with Steve Jobs cause he CAN deliver on time.
But wait, in other news Micro$oft are to sell anti-virus software for their ‘Digital Media Center’ so all is well. hahahaha whatever Bill, I’m not a sucker.
MS has never and will never even enter my living room, not even on my phone or PDA
Magic word “FACE”
“I love it when a plan comes together”
I can see a great Macworld coming
I don’t think Apple is going to jump into the home media center battle just yet, but I agree with the author that Apple is the best company to do it given their diverse resources and engineering abilities.
I do expect Apple to subtly bring all of the pieces into place by road testing them in various applications and functions in OS X, then Apple can produce a device that gathers all of these functions in one, very easy to use, device. It is not hard to see this happening already within your Mac.
Here’s to tomorrow. The stage is set, the curtain rises…

Microsoft has 20 million XBOX’s in the living room, just sold 6.3 Million copies of Halo 2, has Windows Media Video in both new DVD formats, Has Media Centre Editon PC’s, Media Centre Extender, has Microsoft Pocket PC smoking Palm, and Microsft Smart phone coming up rapidly…..
CRAPPLE? What Crapple?
I suspect that the headless iMac will turn-out to be a chameleon type product – one capable of being a stand-alone computer (plus monitor) – or a device capable of plugging into your audio and television systems in the living-room. Airport and Bluetooth enabled, you can surf the internet, watch video’s or listen to internet radio, with simultaneous connection to your existing Macintosh/Windows computer located elsewhere in your home.
Whoa. Imagine a Windows-based entertainment center. Honey, how about a nice evening curled up on the couch in front of the blue screen of death.
The same scary movie over and over and over again. Honey, what are we going to watch tonight? The Return of the Blue Screen of Death, YAS (Yet Another Sequel).
…and when the XBox 2 comes out it will be using a G5 chip. Neat-o Smithy. The problem Microsoft has is that they see the consumers as sheep with wallets. So far, it has worked out quite well for them. The tides are turning, though, and the sheep are beginning to wake up. The die hard sheep that are so used to the MS FEED are getting restless and scared. That’s you Smithy. Change is difficult for people who invest their ego in companies like MS.
These forums are great apart from when trolls enter…
To ‘Smithy’
All those products you mention are crap. They do not integrate with each other, or at least they don’t integrate seamlessly. Too many drivers, patches etc. for my liking.
As for Microsoft Smart Phones – would you trust your social life with Micro$oft? If you do, then good luck to you…
Windows Media Video in both new DVD formats? Can you see what I see?
Well, Steven Birch, I heard that the “blue screen of death” happened to Bill Gates on stage at the CES just last week. So I guess it still makes it’s presence known.
I would love to see Apple get into the Home Media Center arena. We all know it is coming. Like the writer said, others will probably fumble around at it (like they did with digital music) while Apple engineers take their time and come up with the solution to cut the gordian knot. AND they will make seem easy and obvious in hindsight. If anybody can do this and do it right, Apple can.
Smithy…
The poblem with you is that ‘you can’t see the wood for the trees!’
If I were you I would think about this statement… very hard.

“and when the XBox 2 comes out it will be using a G5 chip. Neat-o Smithy”
Umm..but XBOX uses Intel and it still smokes!
XBOX has sold up to THREE times the # of Ipods sold.
We haven’t even talked about the games.
Halo 2 alone has sold more than Ipod.
CRAPPLE doesn’t even begin to compete.
Its over guys.
Good bye!
Microsoft has 20 million XBOX’s in the living room,
Man does that number ever inflate. Bill Gates just said in an interview the other day that Microsoft has only shipped 15 million Xbox units. Of course that number is miniscule to the almost 100 million PS2s out there in everyone’s livingroom.
When the PS3 comes along, people will be like “Xbox what”?
just sold 6.3 Million copies of Halo 2
As for Halo 2, everyone I have spoken to (including my little brother, mr. gamer freak) say the game sucks.
, has Windows Media Video in both new DVD formats
Let us give MS a cookie, this doesn’t mean much since it’s the only closed standard in the DVD arena since H264 will be the dominating open standard.
Has Media Centre Editon PC’s, Media Centre Extender,
Another snoozer; Commodore was selling CDTVs 14 years ago…

XBOX is the best game console on the planet.
The PS2 is the best game console on the planet, followed by the NGC!
“As for Halo 2, everyone I have spoken to (including my little brother, mr. gamer freak) say the game sucks”
Everyone I spoke to, and every review I have seen from the best gamees mags, says Halo 2 ROCKS big time, and its got the sales figures to prove it.
What is your brother? A moron?
Must extend in the family.
“The PS2 is the best game console on the planet, followed by the NGC”
In your dreams perhaps.
In real life nothing touches the XBOX
Whoa! Smithy has another Apple Death Knell. Somebody run over to The Mac Observer and post it!

You’re so uneducated you can’t even invent your own name!
By looking at your last message I’d estimate your age to be 11-12 years old.
XBox is NOT the best games console on the planet – since every time you apologists mention Windows you mention market share etc. so if we use that as the basis of “best” then PS2 is by far and away the best console.
Does that mean I win?

Rubbish.
XBOX has the best graphics, the best sound, the best everything for all the current generation consoles.
Its superior by a long shot.
Jack A –
Even though Gates had a mishap last week, Steven Birch is largely correct — these days, viruses and malware will take down a Windows PC completely before it gets anywhere near showing a blue screen of death.

All those X-Boxes. And to think that M$ has lost money on everyone of them. Quite a marketing feet.
“Tech Journalists fall under the same category as Meteorologists, they can predict stuff, but usually miss the mark.”
Mac jourmalists like the one who wrote above article nearly always miss their mark. They live in dreamland.
Normal journalsist tend to be right a lot of the time.
Media Centre is ALREADY taking off.
“Anymore worthless FUD you can show and tell us?”
I’ll leave the worrthless FUD to the Mac nuts. You guys invented worthless FUD.

You may be in for a surprise.
Halo 2 sales may have pushed the Microsoft games division into profits.
Microsoft only has 3 successful divisions out of the 7; Windows division , the MS Office division and MacBU. Everything else is a money loser. Windows is successful because of its monopoly on the desktop, once Linux pulls the carpet from under that, MS Office will follow suit since it needs Windows (mostly) to be successful.
Alternative computing will succeed in dominance and Linux will lead the charge. Of course Apple won’t be affected by it as much (if at all) as Microsoft will.
“Microsoft only has 3 successful divisions out of the 7; Windows division ,”
Watch Microsoft results Jan ending. Games division may just be in the black.
Plus MSN is already in the black, so that makes FOUR divisons.(Severs, Clients (Windows), Desktop apps(Office) and MSN)
“Windows is successful because of its monopoly on the desktop, once Linux pulls the carpet from under that,”
Linus on the desktop eh?
What is that?
Plus Linux is taking share from the Mac, will soon overtake the Mac on the desktop.
“MS Office will follow suit since it needs Windows (mostly) to be successful.”
DReam on.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
XBox…..?? Give me a break! Even the Atari units were better built than XBOX. Microsoft just had to steal another idea and create a Game Machine to continue their attempts to dominate another market. Well, 15 millions XBOXES doesn’t do anything to the market when compared to the impact of almost 10 million iPods, and growing.
When is the last time you saw a major magazine pick up and article on XBOX, yet everywhere you turn the masses are talking about the next iPod…. Some people are just out of touch with Reality…..
As usual the MAC crowd have nothing *NEW* to say…. The fact that while you are bashing Microsoft, the consumer market just woke up to the many alternatives to the ipod! (and there are many!)
I bought a mini iPod for christmas – it sucked so sold on ebay and got myself a RIO Carbon!
APPLE may have a few cute products but they just don’t get it when it comes to the main stream markets…
That’s why they will NEVER be as big as MSFT.
“XBox…..?? Give me a break! Even the Atari units were better built than XBOX”
And the Atari is very very dead too.
The XBOX easily smokes the Atari in every department that you care to name (graphics, sound etc etc).
Thay are not even on the same planet.
DReam on.
I don’t need to dream, it’s already happening. HP is a prime example of it happening, it’s Linux PC sales grew 100% last quarter from the year before, they’re currently shipping nearly a million Linux PCs a year, and if they numbers keep growing, it’ll be 2 million next year. This doesn’t include the many other OEMs shipping Linux.
Linux is growing faster than Windows in a BIG way.
As for Mac and Linux, both share a Unix heritage, so as long as it is Unix versus Windows and Unix wins, I could care less who has the most share. And Linux supposedly already surpassed the Mac is share, which is a good thing overall because that’s eating right into Microsoft’s wallet, not Apple’s
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue laugh” style=”border:0;” />
“When is the last time you saw a major magazine pick up and article on XBOX”
Every major games mag did cover stories on the XBOX or Halo 2 in the past 2 months.
What planet have you been living on? Pluto?
what’s up with all the trolls in this thread?
Psuedo-Smithy, please get a new name. We’ve already got too many mike’s, and two smithy’s with opposing views doesn’t help either.

A little curious maybe?
Potential “Switchers?”

Umm… what is the maret share of desktop Linux again?
Windows has over 90% share of desktop sales.
I bet smithy drives an SUV or wants to, but can’t afford one. Voted for G. Bush if he’s old enough (doubt it), and thinks Microsuck is real “mericun iron”, and sleeps with his sister. Unfortunately the jerk represents fifty % of Americans I’m sad to say. He’s brain dead and brain washed, can’t think for himself, and will always be an a hole. as well as an idot.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”shut eye” style=”border:0;” />
in regards to the XBox…
I bought into the hype and bought the Xbox when it was first released. Since then I traded it for the original NES. A successful gaming consoles is not necessarily about harddrive size and components, but on the gaming experience, which is why Playstation is better than the Xbox.
Smithy,
You’re not helping. The XBox is certainly a success in terms of getting us into the market. But it’s been lackluster to this poing. And yes, it’s based on an Intel processor. But the XBox 2 is going to have a processor off the same line as the Sony PS3 – that would be the Fishkill plant owned by IBM that produces the G5 processor. Yes, we’re going to PowerPC with the XBox 2, that doesn’t mean anything pro or con to G5s or XBoxes. It’s just the best technology for the kind of work we want the processor to do.
And yes, Halo2 is a great game. We think it’s the best. But in the end, it’s hardly HalfLife or Quake. XBox has a long way to go. I hope we can continue to borrow…er…innovate in the future.
As for this new rumor of a media center Mac/Apple, I do have something to say abou that.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGG! Steve Jobs, you commie pinko leftie! How could you dare to challenge my monopoly!!!!!! I am the Gatester, desroyer of virtual worlds! Heed my warnings or die a Netscape death!!!!!!
Ah, well now, a little Rolfing always makes me feel better.
“Smithy” you’re pissing me off now. Get yourself your own name or fuck off. And BTW, this is a MAC discussion site. If you don’t like Macs what the hell are you doing posting? Your factless, baseless arguments don’t work, just like Windows.
If you’re gonna troll, at least have some facts to troll with.
MadMac :”He’s brain dead and brain washed, can’t think for himself, and will always be an a hole. as well as an idot”
You don’t say.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
But hey, guess who’s got the word “Mad” in his name.
You are crazier than a coot.
’nuff said.
“But it’s been lackluster to this poing. “
Umm..the XBOX console sold more than any other console during the holiday Nov and Dec period.
“But the XBox 2 is going to have a processor off the same line as the Sony PS3 “
XBOX2 is in the future.
XBOX is now, and it still ROCKS big time.
Smithy,
Why don’t you go play with your XBOX right now.
To all of you pushing the marketshare numbers of XBOXes, etc. It isn’t necessarily about market share – it’s about profit. M$ loses at least $100 (closer to $200) per console. They won’t make up the profit with volume… Now, how many games to you have to buy in order to erase the loss on the console?… Lots.
That said, a $500 xMac can’t lose money because Apple doesn’t have the kind of cash M$ has, but if it exists, it will have a razor-thin margin. Apple hasn’t been able to produce anything in the type of quantity it wants with a high-margin product, let alone a commodity box.
This rumor is certainly something to watch!
“Why don’t you go play with your XBOX right now”
How do you know I am not?
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Your game doesn’t seem to be very immersive then.
OK children a few facts.
Xbox 1 is a disaster for Microsoft and will never pay for itself. This is why it is having to be totally redesigned to make it something that can work and pay for itself. That new Xbox is trying to copy the technogy that Sony has long been dveloping for PS3 along with IBM and others. It will be cut throat at best and from the side lines we can all laugh at these two monoliths beating themselves to a pulp while more nimble companies eat away at their markets.
Windows is on a certain path to decline. Linux is the future it has the support of the Asian market which will increasingly be the dominant market. The US market will by comparison be but a side issue withing 20 years at most so get used to it boys. As for windows media the Asians and most other bodies that matter have already commited to MPEG 4 (ie Quicktime plus open standards so again that war will go that particular way. Again get used to it. The US is years behind in 3G technology the standards and markets are being made else where as will all markets and regulations as time progresses.
Media Centres are expensive white elephants that no major consumer company thinks is a serious option. They will be a niche product until something cheaper and more flexible does a better job.
So what does this tell us? Microsoft is a stumbling giant that has little ability to do anything right these days and its days as the boss guy are numbered its just that its clone like fans havn’t the wit to see the wriing on the wall as yet. But they will just see the tears flow from the poor deluded fools lol . The experts on the other hand (not the short sighted tech hacks) are increasingly seeing it and nothing bites the dust quicker than a falling giant once the momentum really takes off. Thats when the clowns (techno luddites) who slavishly follow start to quit the sinking ship. Titanic anyone?
“Your game doesn’t seem to be very immersive then”
Its called multitasking.
Please can MDN remove this fatuous arse calling himself Smithy…
His contribution to this site and planet is really less than a dung-beetles.
Smithy the xBox promoter – piss off, once and for all.
<<<all media can be controlled with one remote>>>
All my entertainment on one remote? Good God, I have 4 kids and 5 remotes, and I can never find any of them.
er, that would be the remotes, not the kids.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
“Xbox 1 is a disaster for Microsoft and will never pay for itself”
Microsoft still made record profits in the past 12 months in spite of the XBOX.
Plus Microsoft may actually break even on the games divsion this quarter partly from huge Halo 2 sales.
“Windows is on a certain path to decline”
Windows has over 90% of th world’s desktop market (nothing even comes close) and 34% of all server sales.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
If anything Microsoft has increased market share in servers for the past 2 years at least.
“Linux is the future it has the support of the Asian market which will increasingly be the dominant market. The US market will by comparison be but a side issue withing 20 years at most so get used to it boys”
Rubbish!
Windows is dominant in Japan, the biggest economy in Asia, and Windows has the biggest market share in China. Windows is in charge in the 2 biggest PC markets in Asia by far.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
In China nearly all pirated softwate is Microsoft Windows and Office.
Even the thieves want Windows because the people demand it.
“As for windows media the Asians and most other bodies that matter have already commited to MPEG 4 “
Microsoft Windows Media Player is the dominant media player in Japan today
Same with China.
That is what consumers are using already, irrespective of who is “commited ” to what.
“Media Centres are expensive white elephants that no major consumer company thinks is a serious option. “
Media Centre is ALREADY gathering momentum since the lastrelease.
Expect Media Cantre to grdually take over from most home PC’s as they get better and the prices continue to plumet.
Its a natural progression.
Mac fanatics have been making wrong predictions for decacdes.
Why should that change now?
Smithy
Reason why MS is taking a beating is because they now must compete. The cream always rises to the top. Look at the crap they put out. Thank you Apple Computer.
” Microsoft is a stumbling giant that has little ability to do anything right these days and its days as the boss guy are numbered its just that its clone like fans havn’t the wit to see the wriing on the wall as yet.”
LMAO!
Dream on.
Microsoft just had the best 12 months of Microsoft’s entire history, with record sales, record profits and firing on all cylinders.
You are confusing wishful thinking with reality.
You are going to get a very rude awakening.
“Reason why MS is taking a beating is because they now must compete”
Microsoft is having the best sales and profits of Microsoft’s life.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Where’s the “beating” at?
Stupid XBox-loving fake “Smithy”:
No numbers to back up your claims? That makes YOU rubbish, lad. No URLs to point to? Then you’re pulling it our yer arse. Without proof, you’re nothing but a lying piece of shyte.
To the real Smithy:
Have patience. Trolls never last long.
The funniest thing is, you guys keep feeding the troll. I find I’m rooting for Smithy.
“Without proof, you’re nothing but a lying piece of shyte.”
Pathetic Mac nut!
I have given all the figures I need to,
Are you sure you can read at all?
To the MS Faithfull
Be honest now, would you trust MS with all Home functions? Let see:
Your alarm clock not going of at the wrong time?
Coming home to find you stove not on?
Your bath not over flowing?
The Coffee maker is not on & burnt out?
Oh and the list can go on & on… I know I won’t be using it..
Yes I would trust Microsoft. I would not and will never trust apple.
To Smithy and everyone else, including the real Smithy,
Thanks heaps for the fun reading this morning.
Can you guys believe I had these same arguments 20 years ago in early high school, over Apples vs MS DOS vs and other smaller computers.
You know, we used to joke that all those Lisa’s (I think it was) that Apple bulldozed into the ground would one day be dug up by Gates and have MS-DOS ported to it. Talk about a step backwards.
The jokes and comments are the same, the tech just changes.
Smithy…
Think about this:
‘Biggest is NOT always best”
An example: The Roman Empire = and we all know what happened to that monoply – Need I say more?
Microsoft Windows Media Player is the dominant media player in Japan today
Actually Quicktime is thanks to cell phones.
Media Centre is ALREADY gathering momentum since the lastrelease.
It’s gathering momentum in a niche market being eclipsed by $20 DVD/MP3 players that the majority will keep on buying until something else comes along to replace that with another $20 item.
Expect Media Cantre to grdually take over from most home PC’s as they get better and the prices continue to plumet.
Nah, by 2007, Linux will be the buzzword for home desktop PCs. Heck, even TiVo is more popular than Media Center PCs and it runs Linux. Which means Linux has already attacked the livingroom without joe consumer even knowing about it.
Its a natural progression.
The natural progression from Windows to Linux. It’s already dominant on the server and will dominate the desktop slowly, but surely. Consumers will always buy the cheapest alternative and Linux fits that model better than anybody else.
Mac fanatics have been making wrong predictions for decacdes.
Why should that change now?
You Windows fanatics (Microsofties) are the ones with your heads in the clouds, at least Mac fanatics are realistic.
Leave the home automation to home automation experts (elan) you focking morons..MS isnt going to enter the Automation Market…As for me, I would trust MS with “some” home functions such as my MCPC. Which I already have and its been great. As far as Apple. I would trust them for Graphics, since thats what I use for Graphics. Bar None, a PC blows away any console shit that anyone can put out. I have an xbox and a ps2. The XBOX blows away the PS2…Anyone who says Halo 2 sucks, Is either a moron spreading fud who has never even seen the game and making their judgements on the game based on the perspective they have on MS. Or like to play games with a PC and just cant get used to a FPS on a console.
As far as I’m concerned I OWN MY LIVING ROOM, NOT APPLE OR MS.
Brought to you by “Maybe”…
If we lower ourselves to reply to an idiot, we become one as well.
magic word : ignore
Here’s an interesting read…
HP lifts curtain on Linux media hub;
http://www.vnunet.com/news/1160393
as quoted from the article…
The Entertainment Center, running Windows XP Media Center Edition, is in essence a PC that sits in the living room. But Fiorina conceded that: “A lot of people out there really don’t want PC functionality in their living room.”
HP is opening more doors for Linux everyday 😎
I made the mistake of buying an HP Media Center Desktop with MS Media Center Software. The first two tv shows I tried to record caused the software to freeze up and shut down the computer. I took it back for a refund wondering what the hell was I was thinking??? Apple is the only company that can do this right. I shudder to think of what a future will be like with Media Servers running Microsoft OSes. Bleak.
My Media Center was the best thing I ever did next to returning my tivo that is.
QuickTime, ewwwwwww!
I notice alot of Bill Gates supporters on MDN since we attacked him for his shoddy CES keynote presentation which had the blue screen of death. Bill Gates, cry. You fscked up! LOL! Steve Jobs keynote will go WITHOUT A HITCH! LOL! Nanny nanny! Cry, Bill Gates, cry! This Smithy guy is paid, man! He is SO PAID!
My MDN Magic Word is military! As in Microshaft’s militia out to get the MDN community because stupid dumb Billy fscked up his keynote!
g’day.
I notice alot of wankers on MDN d1ckriding steve or bill. phuck em both. LINUX FOR LIFE.
If this bunch of juvenile mud-flingers is the Apple market, Microsoft has nothing to worry about.
I’m with you on that one quux. I’m a Mac devotee alright but not with my head so far up Steve Jobs arse that I have to blindly diss everything that ever came from Microsoft. These guys must be crying in their lite beers while having to use Microsoft Word or Excel.
My Powerbook 17inch is the best computer I’ve ever bought. My media center is the second best. My family love it, and will be hard pressed to give it up. If however, Apple do come through on the promise of a seamless media center experience based on the Mac Mini, I will be the first in line to get one
Steve Robs looked like a girls with that neckless on. And that cup warmer what the hell was he thinking????
Error Report Screens from Microsoft always looks better.
