“Angry fans have accused U2 of ‘selling out’ after the veteran band signed a deal with global corporation Apple. The group teamed up with Apple Computer to pre-load their new album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb onto new iPod mp3 players bought the week after the disc’s Nov. 23 release,” World Entertainment News Network reports.
“Also pre-loaded will be a significant portion of U2’s back catalog and, unlike the standard iPods, the special edition U2 version will be black instead of trademark white,” World Entertainment News Network reports. “Carrie Alison, editor of the largest U2 fan Web site, confirms some fans are furious at the band’s decision. ‘Some pockets of U2 fans will rankle at the band aligning themselves with a major corporation such as Apple, but yet also aligning themselves with AIDS charity work,’ Alison said.”

They certainly will “sell out”. That’s why there doing it. Silly fans..
They are not selling out. They are getting into the now and using the premium download service to promote their own album. Sure they got lots of dough, but they are best off selling their album on iTunes then selling CDs
Yeah, yeah. Of course U2 are selling out. I mean, they need to – after selling millions of critically acclaimed and popular albums, I am sure they need cash. Perhaps they felt they had too much street-cred, and they decided to align themselves with an evil multinational corporation to reduce their underground appeal.
I mean, please – it is Apple Inc ! U2 aren’t selling baby formula for Nestle in third world countries !! If there are some U2 fans who are so knee-jerk they’ll complain about U2 signing a (not-so-significant) deal with Apple, then U2 can probably do without those fans.
Rock stars have to rank amongst the biggest capitalists on the planet. These U2 fans are delusional if they think their heros are any different. U2 have more than enough money already. They are just greedy.
Capitalist pigs!! LOL It’s so hilarious how these activist fools (in this case, the U2 fans that are pissed) still have no freaking clue how the real world works. Of course, there were several Apple fans (that are equally clueless) that were pissed at Apple over their promo with Pepsi. Oh well, there are millions of clueless dipsh*ts in the world and this is just another example…
I dig U2 and I love Apple, I’m stoked about the big “deal” between the two…
I wonder if the fans who are unhappy about the “sell out” are also upset about U2 selling out and signing a record contract in 1978.
I could see the fans getting upset about U2 selling out to a soda company or car company or something like that, but Apple, with iTunes and the iPod, is now in the music business. Apple is now selling music and U2’s job is selling music, and they teamed up… What’s so difficult to understand about that?
u2 sucks who cares. Black iPod really cool..
Best story I heard similar to this was when Bob Dylan agreed to use him music in an advert for lingerie.
Loads of his fans turned on him and claimed he had sold out and that he’d always said he would never allow his music to be used to sell products.
Turnd out though he’d said in 1965 or something, when he’d been asked about commercial use of him music, that no, we wouldn’t allow it to be used for advertising … unless it was to sell women’s lingerie.
He always stuck by his principles, and sensibly didn’t allow them to come between him and a some models in their fancy scanties.
Oh well, by the way if you want to save the U2 video to your computer.
Got to the video and wait.
Open Terminal and load the video.
Now open your Terminal and copy and paste the following:
cp -v `lsof |grep -i QTP| grep iTunes|awk ‘{ print $9 }’` ~/Desktop/currentmusicvideo.mov
For Safari:
cp -v `lsof |grep -i QTP| grep Safari|awk ‘{ print $9 }’` ~/Desktop/currentmusicvideo.mov
press return, wait and click your desktop, it should appear. If not quit iTunes and try again with Terminal open and hit up arrow to use the command again.
As you know, getting Quicktime Pro will allow the video to play full screen.
Vanilla Spice has summed it up.
U2 are selling their album, and you can now buy a cool black iPod. What’s the problem?
This is all well and good, but how do you get U2’s new album back onto your computer if it comes preloaded? Won’t the iPod be a slave to a different Mac? Have I missed something?
pff… u2 have made bland music since 1990 coupled with bono’s dodgy political endorsements… i think its apple who are selling out and its gonna damage their brand.
black ipod is cool tho
Eh.. some people don’t realize that Apple isn’t like other corporations.. that’s why they haven’t licensed their OS.. or opened up Fairplay.. they have integrity and u2 wouldn’t talk to them otherwise..
Come on.. you think U2’s not already rich? They can afford to be picky about with whom they associate
how come no alicia keys fans are pissed about her using the word iPod in one of her frikkin songs at the Apple press event.. now that’s selling out.. or sb who loves Apple.. which is it?
I thought U2 sold out when they put their music on CDs and made videos for MTV.

Serioulsy, WTF is the big deal?
NightOwl, all you need is this program:

U2 has always seemed to have a certain fascination with the consumer culture, hence the Pop Mart tour. I think they decided to milk it for all it is worth because with it comes the power to do stuff. Starving artists have very little freedom or power to do any real good in this world, while they are alive at least. The members of U2 have done many good things they may not have been able to do had they decided not to sell U2 to the world.
did i miss something here? was there any official announcement made. as of today, all of this is speculation based on rumors on what they think the announcement is going to be. nobody has confirmed it yet. so why are they already pissed on something that may or may not be true????
beside this rumor seems bogus because, i still don’t see how Apple’s gonna allow to move the music from ipod to computer(aside from the 3rd party products). plus wouldn’t that be in violation of the Apple Corp agreement for sure if they did that?
I’d buy the black ipod and delete all the u2 stuff.
Couldn’t they just put a copy of the files on the data segment of the Hard Drive? Then you could copy it into iTunes when you get it home. Make it a once only copy to stop piracy.
Not only u2 fan can have black ipod

cpr, U2 has been around for 26+ years now. A band can’t suck and keep selling new music as well as they do.
As much as I love ’em, I’d hardly call Apple ‘global’.
If you genuinely believe in a product, and are not just doing it for the money, cross-promotions are fine. Maybe U2 genuinely believe in the product …
Lame!
Get all worked up over a RUMOR, still nothing on the Apple web site about any event less than 48 hours from now.
All bands sell out, the moment they sign with a record label, what’s the big deal?
