The Washington Times: Apple Mac offers better value than Windows PCs

“The iMac G5, with a 64-bit PowerPC processor, is a far more powerful system than any bargain-basement Windows machine. You can buy desktop computers running Microsoft Windows that have 64-bit processors; Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) each offer such CPU chips to computer makers and build-it-yourself users. But the price of such systems can surpass similar Mac configurations,” Mark Kellner reports for The Washington Times.

“In August, writer Paul Murphy of the online publication LinuxInsider.com compared a dual-processor Mac G5 system and a dual-processor Intel Xeon box from Dell. Both are 64-bit computers, and both have enough power for high-end computing tasks such as scientific computations and computer-aided design,’ Kellner reports. “Mr. Murphy looked at Dell and Mac units with equal amounts of RAM (512 megabytes), hard disk space (160 gigabytes) and even video memory (128 MB). The Dell system, at $4,009, was $1,010 more expensive than the equivalent Mac. At almost every level, Mr. Murphy found that Macs were less expensive than Dells with similar features.”

Not if they cant get product out to the shelves on time….
delivery times of 3,4,5+ weeks dont cut it.

  2. I have been waiting on my 6800 card for months….yes I said months

and don’t give me any crap about it being nVidias problem

Apple should not offer items unless they have them in stock. period

I had the same problem with the iPod mini and Dual 2.5

it’s the same story over and over

  3. macbeth sez: “thats true its only 2 weeks until xmas :p”

trouble is at 4+ weeks delivery people have to order by thanksgiving for maybe christmas delivery.
people are waiting later and later to shop for christmas (waiting for late christmas sales and deals)
By not having product available, apple will kill itself in christmas sales….
and then there are the people like me that say wait until after christmas to buy…ecspecially with macwork in san fran starting the first of jan.
and then those products announced there are not available until march…
apples major weakness is delivery of product in a timely manner.

  4. You know, it’s beginning to look to me like Microsoft is increasingly on the run these days. Longhorn is getting trimmed, revenue growth is stagnant, competition is doing great. But I noticed two things.

    1) They have a plan:

    http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac360/more/microsofts_secret_plan_to_defeat_ipod_itms_os_x/P0/

    2) They’re still totally clueless about what is going on.

Life is good. Be in it.

  5. it would hit $50 before christmas if sales were predicted to be good. after xmas it is too late – end of quarter and all.
apple would have to show some major, major changes by consumers away from the pc to keep it moving much after xmas….

and then there is the election psych factor of whoever wins and how the market reacts to that…

  6. Yah I just ordered the 14″ iBook and iPod clickwheel 20GB today and I am so excited for it to come haha I also feel like a kid at christmas. Yah I am at a mac-supported school, and it is crazy the technology involved in it.
