He didn’t do anything really special in opening the back of the computer. It is very consumer friendly as far as access to parts. Apple posted info on what can be accessed and changed. (Quite a bit, it turns out). Damn thing is gorgeous.
I wonder if it is even remotely possible to develop and install a higher performance graphics card for the iMac G5 given the dimensional an thermal constraints?
It certainly seems that it would have been possible to provide an accessible AGP slot with the sacrifice of a somewhat deeper housing. It is nice to be able to easily get to the RAM and HDD on the iMac G5. The only other part that is commonly upgraded is the graphics card… Nonetheless, I like the design far better than the iMac G4 and I want a 20″ version soon!

If ATI and NVidia can develop upgradeable graphics systems for laptops, then Apple should be able to incorporate this into the iMac which is twice the size of any ordinary laptop. The question is would they want to provide this, or should they just tell people to buy a new computer?
Duh! The guy removed only 3 screws to take the back off. Apple designed it to be user serviceable, but not necessarily upgradeable because of the integrated logic board.
Warranty? Does this void your warranty?

No, it does not void the warranty. Litterally everything inside the iMac G5 is listed as user upgradable by apple (even including the logic board, ports, and LCD).
If I wasn’t so damn tired, I’d search the apple support database and find the article link. Instead I’ll just tell you to search the support page for kimacg5. That’ll tell you all you need to know
I saw both 17″ and 20″ today. I was surprised how cool they were running. The 20″ seemed cooler than the 17″. I assume because there is more area for cooling inside and, I was guessing, possibly a longer rear vent for the same processor. I miss the greater flexibility of the previous iMac’s patented neck over just scooting this one to the side for someone else to see. Other than that, this one is another winner. Interestingly, the keyboard/mouse cables bothered me when I looked at it. The full wireless option is the way to go with this. Very nice.
This is so cool � Apple products are the only products that I know where people take pictures of:
– the box
– opening the box (as if it’s the holy grail)
– taking the product out of the box
– all the accessories
– opening the product to see the inside (as if they’re taking the holy grail apart)
– the inside of the product
– the product in every imaginable angle possible

An actual AGP slot is not necessary. ATI and nVidia have already introduced designs for modular, upgradeable graphics cards in laptops. I see no reason why these designs could not be incorporated into future iMacs, iBooks and Powerbooks.

He even peeled away the G5’s radiator…
