“As expected, Apple Computer on Monday began shipping its new iMac G5 computer, two days ahead of its initial estimates,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider. “Several Apple online store customers have reportedly received emails confirming that their orders have left Apple’s manufacturing facilities in Asia. According to the email, customers can expect arrival of the new iMacs within the next 10 days, though precise dates are dependent on the customer’s chosen freight options (standard or premium) and location within the US.”

Yay! First post, and my iMac is on it’s way!!!
why is my imac still shipping oct. 5th…boo.
mark,
Until your iMac actually ships, they won’t update the estimated shipping date. That’s how it worked with my G5 a year ago.
great news. my buddy wants to take a look at them.. he would be a switcher, if he were to buy one…
Yeah switchers Yeaaaaaaaaaaah!
Does anyone know if their local Apple Store has even a display model in yet of the new iMac.
I need to ring them. It is unclear whether the US-ordered models come with a built-in power adapter that ranges from 100-240 volts. This is crucial to me, I will purchase it in the US, but perhaps use it in Europe, too.
The specifications listed by Apple on their website leave room for doubt, and I have contacted MacZone, MacConnection and MacMall and have received three different answers (‘yes’, I ‘dont know’ and ‘no’ (i.e. only 100-120 for US models).
Thanks, and to you early adopters, I’m green with envy!
to michael:
from the apple website — Electrical and environmental requirements
Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
Line voltage: 100-120V AC or 100-240V AC, depending on country of use

id assume that US models are 100-120V only while european ones are 100-240V
matt
Yes Matt, I saw that.
‘id assume that US models are 100-120V only while european ones are 100-240V’
That is the problem … ‘assume’.
That is why I posted … to get an answer from an Apple Store rep who would walk over to the friggin thing while I was on the phone, read what it says, and let me know, or hear from someone who knows without doubt, like an Apple employee, etc.
I dare not ‘assume’ anything if both MacZone and MacMall and MacConnection ALL give me conflicting answers.
Even a guy at the store in Rockingham Park, New Hampshire, was so unsure he would not commit until a Mac was in front of his face.
Thanks for answering anyway.
The Apple Store at the Grove said they hope to have their display unit in by this weekend. If they’re starting to ship, that’ll most likely happen.

The article suggests that only the showcase stores – LA, Chicago, NY, SF will have new iMacs on display this week. The others next week. My local store doesn’t expect any until late next week. (I should say, a display model.) There will be no iMacs available to take home until next month at resellers. All orders are shipping directly from Quanta in Taiwan at this point.
