“Jon Lech Johnasen, author of DeCSS, has discovered the public key that the AirPort Express uses to allow software to play audio through it. Johnasen says that the audio stream is encrypted with AES and that the AES key is encrypted with RSA. The public key is available on his blog as well as a software application that streams Apple Lossless MPEG-4 audio to an AirPort Express,” MacNN reports.

MacDailyNews Take: You know those kids who were obsessed with puzzles when growing up? Jon’s still obsessed.
Neener, neener.
Call me stupid or whatever, but I believe people should make products instead of reverse engineer them. Airport Express is a great product. Buy it, enjoy it. I dont care how many programs will be able to stream music through it. I like iTunes and the interface it uses. I wish he would crack something worth cracking like my creditors and reverse engineer that so I can have a zero balance.
this is GREAT news. This gives people the opportunity to make plugins for audio/video applications to take advantage of the streaming. An mPlayer plugin would be cool… anyone up for writing it?
Man! This guy puzzles me. How is he able to do this? Does anyone have a clue?
And why isn’t he scared of Apple’s Legal team? I guess all those journeys to court have given him REAL cold blood.
whatever: I believe that in some cases even great products should be reversed engineered. Even the airport express – but in this case that’s dumb. I could really, really, really go for having the Airport Express extend my network, which is the reason I bought it. However, I have a D-Link router, and didn’t read thoroughly enough into the Airport Express to find that it would only work with Apple routers.
So now, I’m stuck with an Airport Express, that I can’t return, and have no use for – unless someone reverse engineers it.
But you’re also somewhat (mainly) right – often times most people have the wrong motives/intentions of reverse engineering things.
Nice one Jon, now we just need a plugin for VLC and everyone can watch their divX with sound playing out through their airport express!
BriAnimations…
Put it on eBay.
The airport express can be used to extend non-apple wireless networks. I use it with a linksys at home.
Perhaps the problem with the Airport Express not working with your non-Apple equipment is that you have to use hex code for a password to have it work with Windows equipment? (Like the Airport?)
The problem is with D-link and some proprietary stuff they did. now there customers are suffering.
Re: BriAnimations
I’l buy your airport express of you!
Email me if your’e interested!

And so it starts!…
First REAL and now this guy – it looks like reverse engineering (Hacking into other peoples code/programs WITHOUT the owners/legal consent)is the new trend.
Expect alot of people being sued this year and lawyers making a record profits!
I wonder if anyone is gonna reverse engineer windows???
I have no problem with this at all, being able to patch the sound from DVD player through to a set of powered speakers for audio DVDs would be great.
Apple couldn’t care less, probably. They earn their money in the hardware business, selling additional AE units to people who use the hack will make them as unhappy as a dog who finds a new tree.
They’ll put up a show of indignation, though, to cover their asses with the recording industry.
Reverse Engineer Windows ? That implies it was engineered in the first place. I don’t believe it was. It’s more an organic out of control prototype.
interesting that the affordable Aexpress is a pull for Airport Base Station sales.. that’s interesting..
see the business model being repeated over and over..? gotcha…
at least they lowered the price for the airport base station
BriAnimations,
Did you already try it or only read the document? Apple is only guaranteeing that it would work with Apple routers. But if the Linksys is WDS-compliant, it should work as well.
Mossberg (Wall Street Journal) had it working with several non-Apple routers.
BriAnimations, I read a review not too long ago, don’t remember the link, sorry, but the reviewer was able to get Airport Express working fine on his wireless network that did not have an Airport Base Station. I’ll see if I can find the review on it, but I know the author made the point of saying that he could get it to work even though the directions said it wouldn’t.
Ars Technica reviewer got it to work with a Linksys WRT54G 802.11g router. Check out http://arstechnica.com/reviews/004/airportexpress/airportexpress-4.html
Jon Lech Johnasen major loser and total dickhead.
If he had any intelligence at all this guy would be using it to create new and unforseen wonderful products that enrich people’s life’s. Instead Mr. Johnasen puts his intelligence to use cracking open other designer’s visions. This shows what a lazy lack of intelligence this guy has. He’s wasting what little talent he shows by hacking others work. Why hasn’t a “Deep Pocket” funded this guy yet? Because he’s a total hack.
Does this guy have a girlfriend?
So he is enabling one to uncripple the AE?
One could see him as the one that offered the panacea.
there is a way to connect airport express with itunes to a D-link. it’s very easy. I have two airport expresses: one bridges the Dlink to extend it’s range and the other is used to connect to the stereo in another location. Therefore I have created a wireless netowork using two airport expresses. Write me and I will tell you how to do it: antony@a.imap.itd.umich.edu
