President Bush, candidate Kerry tout universal broadband access while drawing contributions from tec

“Presidential candidates are touting widespread broadband as a boost for employment and rural education, but a close look at financial interests suggests tech policy may also be a campaign paycheck. Candidates for both of the major political parties are drawing contributions from the technology industry, and from communications firms in particular. But the proportion differs,” Emily Kumler reports for Medill News Service.

“Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts says universal broadband access is necessary for the country to rebuild its tech sector and increase employment in high tech industry. As of mid-June, 38 percent of the $2,415,894 Kerry has received from his top 20 donors has come from contributors with a strong interest in the technology sector, according to data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics,” Kumler reports.

“Meanwhile, 5 percent of the $5,886,487 provided by the top 20 contributors to the incumbent Republican candidate, President George Bush, comes from tech companies or lobbyists. The majority of Bush’s top contributors are financial firms that may have investments in the technology sector but are not directly acting on tech firms’ behalf. Another 5 percent, or $3,332,700, of Bush’s total contributions grouped by business sector came from the communications and electronics industry. At nearly $3.8 million, donations to the Kerry campaign from the communications and electronics industry nearly matched Bush’s, but they account for 9 percent of Kerry’s total donations,” Kumler reports. “Bush says broadband will facilitate a classroom in every living room, giving the most remote citizen access to a wealth of information and opportunity. The president has set the goal but has not outlined its execution other than imploring Congress to permanently ban Internet taxes.”

  1. gspank,

you’re out of it man. it would have been much much better had the US preemptively attacked Hitler before he killed all the jews and others. your reasoning dictates that we should let the terrorists and countries that let them operate nuke a western nation city first or worse before we go after those sub human slime. you are a really bad person mr. spank. I totally disagree with you and your ilk.

  2. rodrigo are you voting for Bush? If so I would like to know what policy of his it is that you support. (besides going to war)

    Take your pick:
    Economy
    Taxes
    Education
    Environment
Or any other policy which is why you support him

This is of course supposing that you DO support George W.

  3. Hypothetical situation:
You are God. You must decide who will be the next President of the United States. You have two choices:

The first candidate, while far from perfect, at least attempts to govern according to his Christian beliefs (and for those of you who say God is all love and no judgment, don’t forget the Bible is one of the most violent books ever written).

The second candidate can’t decide which side to take on 90% of the issues, and completely disregards Godly precepts (which, by the way, the United States were founded upon), unless it will get him a few conservative swing voters.

    Who do you choose?

  4. rodrigo, Bush didn’t do a preemptive strike on OSAMA!!! He did a pre-emptive strike on a country that didn’t have any connection to AL QUEDA, or if they did it was miniscule. DOnt you GET IT? If Bush was in office during WWII his pre-emptive strike would NOT have been against Hitler, or even Italy, it would have been against a country that had miniscule ties to Germany, like Turkey. Do you think that would have helped the Germans or hurt them to have the USA invade Turkey right before the war started?

  5. and hadn’t saddam violated the UN sanctions for years and the US was warned by Russia about Saddam’s terrorist ties which would surely result in more atrocious attacks. It’s not just about Osam bone head. that whole side of the world has to be rearranged. Figure it out dude.

  6. Rodrigo,

Al Queda is not weakened one bit by our actions. In fact, studies are showing that they are empowered by them and are seeing a rise in numbers. If you think we can change the way the people think in the Middle East with bombs, you are sorely mistaken. Terrorism is fought with a world community of networked intelligence, and precise strikes when that intelligence comes through.

We have done much to alienate ourselves from the world community, and our heavy handed approach to Iraq has verified the Terrorists Rhetoric.

In my opinion, what you propose to do is burn a house down in order to get rid of the termites, all the while the termites can live deep beneath the house. Yeah the house is burned down, but the termites are just fine…

  7. No reply I see rodrigo. What about the home front man? This war is (hopefully) almost over. Are you voting for Bush and if so which of his domestic policies do you support?

  8. Sorry Jack A, you lost those boys after you stopped talking about guns. Jay Rice has got to be the most ignorant human I’ve heard from in years – even worse than the current president. I actually think I slammed Bush by comparing the two. Well, hopefully the dark ages of American politics will be behind us in a little over half a year, and we can throw another Bush out of the office. He and Cheney can crawl back under their rocks and re-establish their ties with the Bin Laden family. Rumsfeld can go to trial for war crimes. Cheney can take his rightful seat at the right hand of the devil in hell, and our country can get back to being a good place for all, not just for rednecks like Jay Rice.

  9. I love George Bush! He’s the best president in a long time. It’s very unfortunate that all of you liberals can name call our president and then when a person like Jay Rice sticks back to you, you can’t take it. Very lame indeed on your part liberals. You just can’t seem to understand that you can’t negotiate with terrorists. They only understand violence. We will hunt all of them down and eliminate them. Thank God for George Bush. Kerry has no chance!

  10. I can’t believe you liberals think that the hostages deserve to have their heads cut off while their alive and screaming because the US scared a bunch of terrorist prisoners. You people are just as bad as the terrorists. I’m not from the US but I strongly support George Bush!!!!! You people are disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Hey liberal sht heads, here’s another quote from your terrorist friends, “Voice on audio recording vows to assassinate Allawi, fight Americans ‘until Islamic rule is back on Earth'”. Try to figure it out morons. They’re not giving up until they rule the earth period! How do you negotiate with that. You don’t you ass wipes. You eliminate them one by one. You use any means necessary to squeeze information out of these disgusting scum bags. I’d love to see each and every one of you get dropped off one by one to try to negotiate with these psychos. Your bodies and heads would go their separate ways.

  12. Jay Rice and other dummies alike. Explain me the main differences between Islamic Rule and the present USA administration. Both use torture to get their objectives. Both have leaders with low culture. Both use military force as the way to achive their point of view. Both try to subjugate other states to their wishes. Both control the internal Media to hide their internal problems (USA rated very low this year in the international ranking for freedom of press). I’m not getting the point.

  13. Alan Cochrane – Did I say that? I don’t think so. I can’t even figure out why you would think I or anyone else thought that. Please quote from previous posts to back up this claim.

Jenny – Are you informed about what George Bush’s domestic policies are doing to America? Name one domestic policy of Bush’s that you support and lets discuss. Basing your entire decision in this coming election on wanting Geoge W. to go out and kill is not perhaps the most advisable course. There is more to it than that.

  14. from Alan: From: Alan Cochrane:
“I can’t believe you liberals think that the hostages deserve to have their heads cut”

Don’t you realize you’re living in a world where you MAKE SHIT UP. Noone ever said what you are claiming here, you’re mind simplifies the world around you so you can make it fit whatever simple ideas you have inside. It’s pathetic.

  15. All I am seeing here from the Bush supporters is blatant FUD, foul language, and name calling. No one is coming up to the plate to address any of the issues in a logical fashion though I have offered several times. In fact the only issue they seem to want to talk about at all is War and how they want Bush to kill more. It seems to me that this says a lot. We can only hope that the upper part of the bell curve turns out in greater numbers than the lower part in the upcoming election.

  16. you tools infer that because the US scared the terrorist prisoners the innocent civilians deserve to have their heads hacked off. We provoked the gorillas so now it’s our fault that it’s happening. Sorry fkwads, that doesn’t fly. You also swear and name call the president of the US and then when people call you out on it you cry that you’re being cursed at. You people are effing sick!!!!!
