Report: 60 GB Apple iPod coming this summer?

“Toshiba Corp. is planning to launch a 60GB version of its 1.8-inch hard disk drive in the coming months and has already found a customer in Apple Computer, the company said Wednesday at the Computex 2004 exhibition in Taipei,” Martyn Williams reports for IDG News Service. “The drive will enter mass-production during July or August and represents a jump in the storage density of Toshiba’s 1.8-inch drives, said Cindy Lee, deputy manager of Toshiba Digital Media Network Taiwan Corp.’s hard disk drive division technical department.”

“Toshiba’s current highest capacity drive, which is a 40GB model, includes two disc platters, each capable of holding 20GB of data. In the new drive, this capacity will be increased to 30GB per platter,” Williams reports. “Ahead of the launch, Toshiba has been showing the drive to customers and has already received an order from Apple, Lee said. Toshiba is currently shipping 350,000 of the 1.8-inch drives per month to Apple for use in the iPod, which is manufactured by Taiwan’s Inventec Corp.”

  1. How fast and durable are these drives ?

Could they be used in a laptop in a raid configuration to get a performance boost and a weight/power saving at the same time ?

  2. 350,000 drives a month already means Apple is planning to sell around 1 million of the ‘white’ iPods a quarter, including OEM units to HP.

Add in 250K to 500K iPod minis, and Apple is obviously looking to sell around 5 million iPods this year, which could – if my maths are vaguely correct – mean that Apple will earn around $210 million in profit from iPod sales over the next 12 months.

And the ironic thing is that around 50-70% of that will be from Windows users. So arguably Apple will be making more money from selling consumer electronics to Windows users than it is from sales of its own computers.

Some would say sad, whereas I just think its poetic justice.

  3. This gives us a few things to speculate about:

Are they going to introduce lossless tracks on the iTMS? That would be awesome, and definitely put it a large step above MS and everyone else trying to bite at the Apple.

We already heard they are implementing a color screen for the next gen iPod. Does this mean they will incorperate video? Showing pictures from a built in iPhoto? How cool would that be – ipod + digital camera = unlimited storage, and the best vacation tools available, eh?

  4. Key thing is to be able to plug the USB cable from the camera directly into iPod … no more crappy media readers please.

And yes it would be cool … I think that we might hear something on June 28th. Although that said the current iPod is still selling like hotcakes … and apple may not want to canniblize these sales!

  5. I really have to think again my motivs..What will happen during the WWDC… Maybe I stay here in Finland with my PowerBook..

  6. I’m guesing the 20 GB will become the 30 GB. Anyone know what the price is going to be, It most likely is going to be $500 for the 60GB do you think they’ll jack up the price to??
