“Apple fans are in a frenzy, but this time its due to a lack of ‘insanely great’ products emerging from Cupertino in the first quarter of 2004. Since January’s Macworld Expo, the computer company has failed to produce a single new hardware offering and has run into problems delivering those products that were announced during the first days of the year,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. “Both Apple enthusiasts and analysts have raised some concerns, especially when it comes to the Power Mac G5 product line

  1. If it’s this hard to get the G5 right in a desktop, can you imagine how long it’s going to take to get it in a Powerbook?! We’re going to have to wait until well into 2005 at least. Guess I’ll go ahead and buy that 15″ PB now. Sigh.

  2. This is still just a rumor. I hope one that turns out to be inaccurate. However, it does make me wonder if I should be considering selling some of my apple stock temporarily….

  3. Jack, this has as much to do with stock price as your infatuation has had to do with its rally.

    Apple could buy some nvidia and AMD guys a couple drinks and get this figured out by Earth day I bet.

    Anyway, who cares? The big hole in apple’s line is on the low end, with 2 year old emac and imacs. They are quite pointedly not filling that hole, for their own obscure reason. Probably the 100 pallets of g4’s still to use up.

  4. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. It is in Apple’s favor to get the job done right by performing appropriate shakedowns and making necessary design modifications.

  5. People b*tch when Apple ships hardware/software that’s not quite ready and they b*tch when they wait until it’s right. I’d rather wait and have them get it right the first time. My money is on announcement at WWDC. BTW- for 99.5% of Mac users the G5 is plenty fast.

  6. The source here, AppleInsider, is among the most reliable. I’ve been holding off approving a current G5 for our small business, but now we’re going to go ahead and buy it…
    BTW, Apple retail staff are predicting end of the calendar year or early 05 for the G5 Powerbook; though they shouldn’t have any particular inside knowledge about this, that seems about right.

  8. Im not sure about anyone else, but over my easter holiday while at home from college I had to go over to both my brothers apartments and tune up their computers which run XP. Got one running iTunes and he loves it and had to install adaware on both to get rid of all the spy software that installs itself because of how crappy IE is. It was frustrating to wait on those intel machines after Ive been using my PB 15 since feb. Helping them out only reminds me of how smart I was to switch. Ill never go back.

  9. The G5 may see a Dual 2.5 Ghz added, but I doubt it. I think they have their hands full with the rest of the line and a G5 bump can wait until the 3 Ghz chips come.

    My opinion is the rest of the new IBM chips are going into Powerbooks and iMacs. iBooks and eMacs are getting the last Moto G4 chips.

    My unconfirmed source say that they have been trying water cooling for Powerbooks and G5’s but can’t stop the leaks.

    But it has been awhile, time for some juicy news.

    15″ TiBook – hinges (I never broke mine, but it scared me a few times)
    12″ alum book – heat
    15″ alum book – white spots
    G5 – power suppy beeping and firewire issues + delay
    iPod – batteries (more of a PR fuck up)
    iPod mini – delay
    XServe G5 – delay

  11. I’ve got a 1 GHz 17 inch laptop which I love – sure more speed would be great, but this machine does it all – no complaints. Sure the 1.25 GHz which came out 3 weeks after I got this one would have been sweet but that’s hardware for you.

  12. My goodness, Perry, did you actually spend the money to purchase every one of those products? If so, then you may have a legitimate beef with Apple, and I’m truly sorry for your woes.

    However, if not, then why are you whining so? The “delays” which you note are superfluous and mostly wishful thinking of consumers, like yourself, who are always chomping at the bit for something NEW! ECXITING! DIFFERENT! or SPECTACULAR! and then you go offo and pout when you don’t get it NOW, like so many Veruca Salts out there in We Want NOW It Land. I’m in the camp with NoPCZone above – I’d rather Apple got it right the first time, no matter how long it takes – and what they’re offering in the stores and online is pretty darned good to begin with, even if it is [insert audibly shocked GASP here] more than 1 year old.

    And please, using such foul language, no matter how hacked off you may be, doesn’t help your argument any.

    I use Macs daily (Powermac G4 & G5) and am getting quite envious of the speed PCs enjoy. My GF has a AMD64 notebook that’s just about faster than any Mac I’ve used. Apple is being trumped on anything non-G5.

    I really do have high hopes my next machine will be an Apple. Losing hope though. 🙁

  23. Simon…we�ve got Macs and PCs. Our experience is quite different than yours. Our PCs are very peppy (both laptops and desktops). Our non-G5 Macs cannot compete with the PCs. And our PCs compete very nicely with the G5s. Plus we have no problems with the XP system although OSX is “cooler” and a bit less clumsy.

    We will see that this current set of problems that Apple is having of not putting out new computers in a regular, timely fashion will be looked back as a real fiasco. I can see the headlines now…”Jobs More Interested in iPods than Computers?”

  29. I don’t fault Apple for delays. They don’t build all the components in their products and therefore are at the mercy of other company’s schedules, productivity, and limitations. That being said, I do wish SJ would quit making predictions about how fast the next chip will be a year from now, how many songs will be sold by X date, etc. People react much more dramatically with Apple than other companies. Other companies have delays and no one notices. Apple pushes a release date back by two weeks and everyone goes into panic mode. And yes, rumor sites are cancerous. They come up with dream specs and tell everyone that they’ve gotten them from good sources, whipping everyone into a frenzy, and then the real thing ends up being disappointing. People need to stop listening to these bozos.

The people on the iPod team are not the same people on the Mac team, so you idiots who keep making statements about how they need to focus on something besides the iPod can shut the hell up stop proving your ignorance. The possible problems with the G5 (and we don’t even know there are any) have nothing to do with the iPod. The success and attention paid to the iPod right now should be considered welcome. They’re bringing in a lot of money and doing wonders for Apple’s name. Imagine the state of things right now without them.

  32. No, my point is, without the success and good press of the iPod all they’d have is people blathering on about how there haven’t been any computer updates in so long. At least the iPod is bringing in money, and positive headlines. They’re a big company with a lot of people working on different projects. People seem to think that the evolution of the iPod has caused a slowdown for the rest of their line. The people who work on the iPod are not the same people who work on the iMac, PowerBook, or Power Mac. So instead of condemning the iPod and blaming the delays of the other products on it, appreciate that it’s doing well, making Apple money, and giving them a ton of attention that could someday translate into sales of computers by people who would not otherwise have given them a shot.

    We all know that XP runs faster and smother than Apples OS.
    Every time I sit infront of a Apple I wait with the spinning beach ball
    -thats just when doing normoal OS activity let alone a large .psd file
    Apple’s products are just slow…
    Non Apple users sit down and they say “like why is this so great… its slow”
    Apple is at the mercy of IBM the entire future of Apple rests withe IBM.
    Apple has failed to sell enough G5 units for IBM to make a profit.
    IBM is going forward with the new chip only for Microsoft’s Xbox.
    The reason there are no new machines is IBM has not supplied any new chips.

    The Apple operating system is nice but thats about it, once MS comes out with Longhorn new file structures and .NET built in the fringe OS’s will be out in the cold.

  38. I don’t understand. The Windows, um, enthusiasts, are going to base their decision about which computer to buy based on the fact the one of them subjectively feels a bit *peppier* than the other? Forget which computer is more functional or easier to use or less prone to viruses and spyware, or even looks better… you’re going to buy the one over the other cause it’s peppier? That’s just silly.

    I have no beef with anyone who weighs the options and decides on one platform or another, but peppiness seems a really stupid way to do this. I’ve got a little 867 mhz G4 laptop, certainly not the peppiest machine. But it works fine, I never wait more than a few seconds for big programs like photoshop to load up (not to mention that on this machine, unlike Windows machines, I can leave those programs open forever and not wait at all for them to load), it plays 3D games at high resolution with no choppiness.

    Point is — and I know it’s silly to say something serious with all the trolls lurking around here — I have a pokey computer, but for 99% of users it’s absolutely, utterly, perfectly fine. So to let peppiness win the day is really, really stupid. And yet I keep hearing it used as a justification to buy Windows computers. What Windows people need to understand is that “Mac zealots” are not fanatical about the philosophy, or the marketing, or the lifestyle or whatever. They just get confused when they see otherwise smart consumer do something stupid like buy a computer based on peppiness. It’s confusing and frustrating and makes them just want to point out all the factors that should be going into the decision. It’s as simple as that.

    – Longhorn delayed, many key features (like the ‘new file structures’ you type about and flaunt like a speedo) are going to be removed so the thing can happen on a reasonable schedule. You should check it out on google.

    – If ‘Apple is at the mercy of IBM’ then Microsoft is at the mercy of Intel and AMD, but there is a new menace for you Sputnik, IBM is licensing the Power chip to others, so we may even see Windows on that chip.

    – All three next-gen game systems are going to use the IBM chips – XboxNext, Nintendo N5, the PS3…

    – And Linux sites are really where you should be trolling, seems Microsoft is more worried about that, but you probably don’t read Slashdot.

    – So let us worry about how to spend our money – your computer is faster? great. That Windows OS is counterintuitive (you can look that up on ‘dictionary.com’) and yes, I have a PC for games, so yes I do know what I’m saying, but for getting things done, I use my Macs. Which would be design and music, and writing.

    And stating something like ‘spinning beach-ball’ does not really make you sound like you know what you’re talking about, I only see that thing occasionally and I’m still on a G4… Did you forget how much time you spend moving your ‘arrow’ around in windows but not actually being able to do or click anything? It’s the same thing.

    Indeed, silly how Windows users do not realize that the Mac gives the user a clue “I am busy atm” while when Windows has a dead arrow and a frustrated user in a frenzy click fest nothing *rings* on the Wintel user mind: “weird, I kept clicking but nothing happened. Who knows what happened to the *mouse*. Then when the mouse worked again Windows was as fast as ever”
