Somebody’s selling a whole lot of sugared water on Apple.com

Apple is promoting the Pepsi + iTunes music giveaway on their home page. With the text “100 million free songs. Starting February 1st. 1 in 3 wins. Watch the ad during Super Bowl XXXVIII,” and a whole lot of Pepsi bottles.

See it the virtual mothership here.

MacDailyNews Note: When Steve Jobs was attempting to lure John Sculley from his position as Pepsi-Cola CEO to become CEO of Apple Computer, Inc., the line he is reported to have used to seal the deal was, “You can either sell sugared water to kids or you can help to change the world.” Some reports paraphrase it as a question Jobs posed to Sculley, “Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life, or do you want to change the world?” Since only Sculley and Jobs know for sure, we report both versions here.

  1. thanks DrBadAss – you summed it up nicely. if anyone has the chance to read through macaddict’s history of the mac and apple, do so. its a hoot.

he changed Apple alright. if you can catch the recent article with Steve Jobs about how salespeople nearly killed apple, that’s a good one, too.

  2. “I guess Sculley changed the world. But in hindsight, I wish he would have stuck to sugar water.”

Think of it this way though, if Sculley had never been a part of Apple, SJ may not have ever left Apple and started NeXT, and experienced the successes and failures that molded him into Steve 2.0 (the new and improved version) which has undeniably turned Apple around. He may also have not purchased Pixar, so we’d be without that force in the entertainment world. If Steve hadn’t become humbled after leaving Apple, he may have ruined Apple himself.

Sculley never really understood Apple (no CEO besides Steve has) but he was an essential part of the road to get to where they are now. Things could have been a lot different (worse). The best decision he made at Apple was to strip Steve of his power and set that course of events into play.

  4. What if I had your pink iPod mini?

    You gonna suck on my BIG toe? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Just kidding. I had to. I just had to. Bear with me I just needed some humor for the day, I am bored.

  5. I found your comments to be insightful, ndelc. The experiences that S.J. had in the interim may have honed his business savvy. He has certainly had a great track record over the past five years, especially with the iPod which was met with derison by some. In fact, the main thing that hurt Apple in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s was the slow pace of CPU development by Motorola. Once Apple hooked up with IBM things started to look a lot better. We just have to make some ground up before the rejuvenation of Apple becomes apparent to the analysts.
