eMachines beats Apple to first 64-bit laptop computer

“Everyone imagined Apple Computer would be the first company to offer a 64-bit processor notebook computer, but with no near plans to release a G5 notebook, Apple for once got beat. Today e-Machines began offering the first 64-bit notebook computer using the AMD Athlon 64 processor,” Fabrizio Pilato writes for MobileMag. “The eMachines M6807 is loaded, with 512MB ram, 60GB HDD, Integrated 802.11g and 10/100Mbps ethernet a massive 8-cell Lithium-ion battery and of course the Athlon 64 3000 processor at 2.000 GHz and 1MB of L2 Cache.”

“An average sized 15.4-inch LCD display is powered by ATI’s Mobility RADEON 9600 video card, the system offers cinematic visual quality for gaming and other graphics-intensive applications. The display features a 16:10 aspect ratio, and allowing up to 30 percent more DVD viewing area than a standard 15-inch notebook screen. Of course the only 64-bit operating system right now is linux, it will be impossible to see the benefits until Microsoft releases a 64-bit Windows,” Pilato writes.

The modestly priced M6807, with a multi-format DVD-RW(+/-) drive, is $1,549 after $100 rebate.

  1. The tech specs say that the thing weighs “7.5 lbs. (8.65 total travel weight)”. Why the two weights? Does travel weight include something you don’t need unless travelling, like the battery?

  2. you’re right kenny, the ‘travel’ weight does include the battery.

Apple, on the other hand, only gives you ONE weight, and that’s with the battery, and optical drive (like you really have a choice) installed.

  3. It’s still garbage. eMachines’ track record with “innovation” has much to be desired. A G4 Powerbook will still blow the pants off of it because of the OS differences alone. I’m sticking with my Apple.

  4. “Of course the only 64-bit operating system right now is linux, it will be impossible to see the benefits until Microsoft releases a 64-bit Windows,” Pilato writes.

So someone who buys this may have to wait at least 4 to 5 more years before they’ll be able to take advantage of the processing power of this 64bit chip…of course with hardware refinements and more models being designed and sold, buying now would be somewhat a waste of money and time.

  5. Dak: The OS that supports 64bit extensions for AMD will be released within sevral months. It will be called windows 64 elements and will support the x86-64 AMD architecture.

  6. Shoot, for the price that you can get a powerbook 15″ superdrive, you can get this. Sure it’s heavier and you’ve got no mac os, but mac OS or no, photoshop looks and feels the same, also, it’s faster.

    I’d buy it if it wasn’t e-machines

  7. Of course, it ships with Windows XP Home Edition. What a joke, er watte.

Heavy, almos twict as thick, and no doubt 1 hour battery time. And I bet it’s noisey with the fan it must have.

But when they talk about the 64 bit race, they’re not talking about old Sun boxes, or Tadpoles, or whatever, they’re talking about current state of the art 64 bit processors. And AMD did beat Apple for timing , but for how much else in the long run? That’s the $64,000 question.

  8. I know there already 64-bit Solaris laptops (not by Sun).

As for the first 64-bit PERSONAL laptop, or whatever… RUN, don’t walk, as far and as fast as possible from eMachines. I have been burned so badly so many times by their awful hardware and service. You may get lucky with an eMachines–I bought mine on several recommendations from happy customers–but I’ve since learned I’m not alone by a long shot. I wouldn’t risk it at any price, personally.

  9. Apple won’t release a G5 PowerBook until they can do it right. eMachines will do it to get a headline, but the product will probably tank.

The heavy weight is a good thing for eMachines buyers though. It makes it harder for someone to steal it from their trailer ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  10. Give them one thing at least they ship it with Nortons Anti-Virus (3 months complimentary). Yuk still Windows in a lead brick, I’d have trouble lugging that thing around.

  11. Is it just me or is anyone else highly unimpressed with the specs on the machine. I wouldn’t use “loaded” and 512 MB in the same sentence in 2004. Try a GB and then we’ll talk. And what about Gig ethernet. This is a cookie cutter laptop with an athlon stuck in it. Case closed.

And what’s up with that sentence about Windows 64 bit. “…it will be impossible to see the benefits until Microsoft…” I beg to differ. I beleive I’d see a lot more benefits from runnig linux at 64 bits now, rather than wait and let some hacked up, half-assed Windows 64 mess everything up.

And we all know that Microsoft’s first real attempt at a 64 bit OS will be longhorn, so don’t doubt it when I saw XP 64 will suck ass and fall apart.

  12. Yep ‘Windows 64 elements’ will be to 64 bit operating systems what two Fords welded together will be to 4 wheel drive. But then for its clientele the badge will be all that matters no doubt.

  13. The size of a laptop!
    The weight of a desktop!
Drop on down to e-machines today and load one up on your dolly!

I have it from reliable sources that the above will be their advertising slogan…

  14. Mr Mister: “The OS that supports 64bit extensions for AMD will be released within several months.”
Eric: Of course, it ships with Windows XP Home Edition.

So I have to spend $1549 for the laptop and then spend another unknown amount to get Windows XP-64.

At least my G5 came with 10.2.8.

  15. Mr Mister: As near as I can tell, your point was that there is eventually going to be a 64-bit hack of XP to run on the eMachines brick. Peter’s point is that after waiting all that time for it, you’re going to have to pay extra for it. What has that got to do with missing your point?

  16. Emachines 64 bit laptop – strike one

Windows xp 64 bit edition now available for download – strike two

Shitty ass mac 64 bit processors – strike three

    Mac has got nothing!!!!!
