“Over the past few years, Apple Computer Inc. has flummoxed its critics and thrilled its user base by venturing into new territory with products like the iPod and its .Mac online service and chain of mall-based retail stores,” writes David Zeiler for The Baltimore Sun.
“Apple has explained the new ventures as tactics to sell more MacIntosh computers — which, after all, is how the company makes most of its money,” writes Zeiler. “But the decision to go further in the area of digital music — first with a Windows version of the iPod and, by year’s end, a Windows version of iTunes that will allow PC users to access the Music Store — hints that a fundamental shift in Apple’s strategy may be afoot.”

If Apple really wants to gain market share they will make it possible to runs Windows programs on every Mac as easily and as quickly as the Mac programs (be it with a new and better “Virtual PC” or a built-in Intel processor.
Anyone who has used both machines side-by-side quickly see the advantages of the Mac.
Buy Virtual PC. Apple dominates the areas it targets. 80% of creative professionals surveyed state they use a Mac, excepting 20% for Web design. For Apple to play the Market Share game they need to jump into the general corporate sales arena. This means they need an entry level corporate PC, which they currently do not have. The eMac and iMac are consumer and fashion PC’s, the PowerMac is a high-end desktop and workstation PC. Same for iBook. The Powerbook however is getting adopted by more and more corporate professionals. So this is an indicator that the corporate market will buy Mac PC’s if one is available. Apple simply does not compete in this space…yet.
A look at Panther’s new features and additions to their basic Apps clearly shows Apple is preparing to blitz the corporate and government markets. It is Apple’s style to surprise the market with a big bang. I believe that is exactly their intent. Panther ties up all the integration issues for Mac’s running side by side with Wintel PC’s. All Apple needs now is a productivity suite that ties in their outstanding Mail, Calendar, iSynch, Address book and Keynote with a Word processor and spreadsheet as well as integration with Exchange, Notes and Groupwise. Notice that Textedit now imports and edits basic Word documents!
Oh, add in iChat AV integration and being able to print to any Wintel Printer on the network. Throw in video conferencing over an Intranet and wow, what a powerhouse corporate PC you could have… The writing is on the wall.
I really see Apple’s future with developers, IT, and possibly the education market (not so sure on that last one). I’m not sure a *nix machine will ever be extremely popular at the workplace, but Macs and Linux OS machines do have in-roads in research facilities, universities, server rooms, and on the desks of software developers and media companies. I think we shouldn’t really think of Apple in terms of wide-spread market share but instead stick to niche market. Honestly, that’s what Apple is thinking.
I’ve said before, Apple doesn’t need a fat, slow, Virtual PC… it needs a piece of stripped down, sleak, software that will open Windows Office suite ONLY in OS X. ‘Switchers’ will feel comfortable using Mac versions of all other software and will eventually (when they ‘feel at home’) upgrade to Mac Office. Apple must do all it can to make a ‘switch’ transitional – rather than feel like a ‘no going back’ leap in the dark.
