The worldwide server market grew 3.1 percent in the third quarter of 2002, as worldwide server shipments totaled 1.1 million, up from 1.07 million units in the third quarter of 2001, according to preliminary statistics by Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc. While the industry did grow, Gartner Dataquest analysts said the relatively poor performance of the market for the same quarter last year, due primarily to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, must be considered when judging the change. Apple shipped 5,700 servers for 1.2% of the market in 3rd quarter 2002 compared to 1,525 servers for 0.4% market share in 3rd quarter 2001. That’s a 273.8% year over year increase. Before you get too excited, check the other four companies and their numbers that came in ahead of Apple. Still, Apple easily posted the most positive growth and this is a welcome development for Apple and their Xserve.
