Meltdown Warning: Windows XP on Intel-based Macs lacks fan driver [UPDATED]
Monday, March 20, 2006 - 05:40 PM EDT

Installing Windows XP on your Intel-based Mac can cause problems and not just the Karmic kind:

"According to a thread on MacRumors, the current XP install doesn't include a fan driver, which means your Mac's fan never goes on. That may not be a big issue if you're using an iMac for limited periods in a well-ventilated space, but if you're planning on running XP on a MacBookPro, you may find things getting mighty hot. We're not dissing narf and blanka here; they won the contest and deserve their $13,000. But you may want to be a little careful before trying out their solution at home," Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

More info here.
MacRumors' Windows on a Mac forum here.

[UPDATE: 3/21, 1:35pm: "It appears that the fans in Macs do indeed go on regardless of which OS is running, though there is apparently some concern about how the fans are regulated by software over time. Several commenters have pointed out that even in some earlier Mac models, running non-Apple OSes (i.e., Linux) could result in the fans running constantly, due to a lack of Apple power-management software. So, the good news seems to be that, no, XP won't melt your Mac. The bad news? Your fans may whirr constantly, causing a bit of noise pollution, and possibly draining your batteries before their time if you're using a MacBookPro," Engadget's Marc Perton reports. Bottom line, MS products are dangerous

Mar 20, 06 - 06:48 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

And I heard running XP on your MBP wasn't too "hot an idea."

Mar 20, 06 - 06:51 pm Comment from: MacDude

NOW HOLD TFSCK ON!

The default for no fan driver response is for the hardware to maximize the fan speed.

Same thing happens when Mac OS X "hangs", the hardware doesn't get the calls from the OS to tone down the fans, so it turbos them.

This is standard Apple procedure.

I have read many posts from those who are running XP on their Mactels (traitors!) and te fans are at full blast because there is no driver to slow them down.

Game over.

^ Ahh, ha-ha-ha-ha, haaah-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Sometimes, January, you are just so funny . . . LOL LOL LOL

And then there's now.

Mar 20, 06 - 06:55 pm Comment from: MacDude

Oh yea, Engadget is full of $hit.

Can you say hit traffic troll?

Anyway MacRumors is filled with a bunch of stupid kids who hyperventalite at a moments notice.

I wouldn't count on them as being a creditable source of accurate information.

Engadget should know better, but troll stories are hit traffic generator's.

Apple fanboies s*ck a$44 too.

Mar 20, 06 - 06:57 pm Comment from: Emil

Another example is when you start your mac in target disk mode, fans are on full blast.

Mar 20, 06 - 06:58 pm Comment from: Paul

Ha HA, Apple just voided your warranty/AppleCare for running a non-approved operating system.

Bet Apple will rethink allowing Windows on their hardware when the scores of melted CPU's come flooding in the door.

STUPID APPLE, XP is for PC's.

Mar 20, 06 - 07:00 pm Comment from: Marc Perton

I'm a idiot, I know it.

Shoot me please.

Mar 20, 06 - 07:01 pm Comment from: Bob

Doesn't the lack of fan driver cause the fans not to scale down, but stay at full speed?

Mar 20, 06 - 07:11 pm Comment from: KA

Umm... I believe this claim has been debunked

http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Users/Drivers

> Fans have been verified to be working, but are generally only audible
> under heavy CPU load or when the CPU temperature gets very high. There
> have been some perceptions that XP is running hotter than Mac OS X, but
> measurements indicate that maximum case temperatures under XP are
> no greater than under Mac OS X.

Mar 20, 06 - 07:11 pm Comment from: macnut222

I think this is the first thing MacDude said that was actually factual.

Mar 20, 06 - 07:37 pm Comment from: inferno10

I am running XP on my Mac Mini (1.67GHZ Core Duo). I don't hear the fans run during routine tasks, like browsing the net or messing around with settings. When I do run CPU intensive tasks, such as 3DMark or Quake III Arena, I begin to hear the fans run. The more intensive the task, the louder the fans become. If the story were true, the fans would be running at high speed until it can illicit some form of response from the system, NOT be prevented from running. Please get the facts straight before posting Windows-bashing material. I know we all love OS X, but it's truly a shame when Mac sites look for the smallest piece of flame bait to post.

For detailed information regarding running XP on a Mac, and to read actual user's experiences behind this project, please read the OnMac wiki: http://wiki.onmac.net/ or visit the forums at http://forum.onmac.net/

Mar 20, 06 - 07:57 pm Comment from: ishufflemyfeet

Please get the facts straight before posting Windows-bashing material.

OH JESUS H CHRISTMAS!!!

Who in all hell would HAVE IMAGINED A MAC USER running Windows would scold other Mac users running Mac OS X?

It's truly the end, hell has frozen over

We are now destined to fight amongst each other.

The Mac users running Windows vs the Mac users running Mac OS X.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Is a Mac user running Windows a actual Mac user?

Is he/she a sellout or a traitor?

LET THE HATE BEGIN!!!

Mar 20, 06 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Mike

I'm running XP on my Mac

I still consider myself a Mac user.

Mac OS X is a stupid OS.

I'm running twice as many software titles as before.

I'll never go back to Mac OS X.

I'll buy a Visa PC when it comes out.

There's nothing you can do to stop me.

Mar 20, 06 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Slim Jim

The question, MacUser, is are you an asshole?

The answer is a resounding YES.

Have a nice day.

Mar 20, 06 - 08:25 pm Comment from: Slim Jim

Oh, I'm a Mac user running Windows. BTW.

hehehhe

Vista will be your master. Soon, real soon.

hhahahahahaha

Mar 20, 06 - 08:28 pm Comment from: suspect

Whoopee. Not only will your Mac run XP like a POS PC, its fans will run at full-bore and make as much racket as a POS PC. Windows is miserable enough without the vacuum cleaner racket.

Hmmm what if Apple did a little firmware "revision" that DID shut the fans down when a non-Apple OS was booted (and logged it permanently for Apple Service's convenience). Wouldn't that be interesting.

Mar 20, 06 - 08:34 pm Comment from: iDon't

I'm to scared to put XP on my Macs. If you need XP its easlier (maybe even cheaper)to just by an eMachine of cheap Dell.

Mar 20, 06 - 08:40 pm Comment from: Manny

Screw you Slim Jim, your a traitor.

Your nickname represents your pecker, good luck.

Mar 20, 06 - 08:57 pm Comment from: G-ZUS

G-ZUS says: Running Windows on a Mac is an abomination. It is a sin in the sight of the Lord. A person running Windows on a Mac is NOT a Mac user.

I'll go Amish before I'm ever bitch to Microsoft.

Those who want XP on their Macs are welcome to bend over. Ballmer loves you.

Mar 20, 06 - 09:24 pm Comment from: mark

G-ZUS,

Fsck you, I bought Apple hardware, that makes me a Mac user.

Apple don't care what OS your running anymore.

After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." - 06/06/2005

I guess buying a iPod for your PC makes you a Mac user then.

"Can't we all just get along?"

And yes, Jay Leno REALLY DOES SUCK!

Mar 20, 06 - 09:51 pm Comment from: Greg Nacu

Ah yeah. What a joke. You aren't a Mac User if you aren't running some version of the Mac OS. The only "using" that a person does with the hardware is press the power button. After that everything you interact with is software. And if all you do is run Windows, why would you bother getting a Mac in the first place??

I can see dropping down to Windows to play some game that's not yet available for Mac OS X. But using Windows for anything else that Mac OS X could also easily do... You'd have to be a complete idiot to not boot back into Mac OS X.

MW: Gone. As in, where has everyone's common sense gone?

Mar 20, 06 - 09:53 pm Comment from: TNMacDude

Sigh,

Putting Windows XP on your expensive Mac hardware totally defeats the purpose of having expensive Mac Hardware.

Mac Fans, please listen, don't go back to the Dark Side! Market Share does not equal bliss!!!

Um.. MacDude...

"LET THE HATE BEGIN!!!"

Couldn't you pretty much conclude all of your posts that way?

Just a constructive observation.

Mar 20, 06 - 10:08 pm Comment from: bigq

can all this noise (windows or mac user id) stop?.. these are just machines/ software for us to get along, not religion or belief! where the hell 'll be the rest of you when Bill and Jobs eventually team up?... can't you see it coming?

Mar 20, 06 - 10:32 pm Comment from: Long'n

Oh bigq, now your hard disk must die, you see, it is a religion. There can only be one right oh-ess, and it is Mac OS-X. If you don't really understand this, it's a very sad thing. I'm sorry but now you must lick the 110vac power line-in on your PC power supply, good bye!

Mar 20, 06 - 11:22 pm Comment from: Kill Bill

bigq, you're f*ckin dead.

I am gonna mow down your family and eat your cat for lunch.

Then I'm gonna direct my specially trained crows to peck you to death while you walk your dog.

These are the same crows that bitchslap MacDude on his way to the store every day.

Man, you are soooooo f*ckin dead.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/20/will-xp-melt-your-mac/

Update: Well, you can't say Mac users don't hunt down rumors and quash them quickly (though some are, of course, just as guilty of spreading rumors)! It appears that the fans in Macs do indeed go on regardless of which OS is running, though there is apparently some concern about how the fans are regulated by software over time. Several commenters have pointed out that even in some earlier Mac models, running non-Apple OSes (i.e., Linux) could result in the fans running constantly, due to a lack of Apple power-management software. So, the good news seems to be that, no, XP won't melt your Mac. The bad news? Your fans may whirr constantly, causing a bit of noise pollution, and possibly draining your batteries before their time if you're using a MacBookPro. We do have every confidence that narf, blanka and the rest will resolve this issue -- and probably for a lot less than $13,000.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:14 am Comment from: Cartman from SouthPark

Engadget sucks @$$.

And screw you guys running XP on your Mac's, I'm going home.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:24 am Comment from: Spudnik

I can't believe it, some Mac users DO have a brain! It's a slow transition right? First, you run Windows to play your computer games. Then less and less you boot into OS X until, POW. you realize your wasting HALF of your HD on that os that suddenly is unused. You reformat your HD to a 100% Windows partition. Later, when you need to replace your obsolete POS Mac box, you think, Hmm.... Should I buy this eMachines PC for $300 WITH Windows |OR| buy this iMac for $1299 plus buying the superior OS separate. Money talks, Money talks.

Mac Fans, please listen, don't go back to the Dark Side! Market Share does not equal bliss!!!

TOO FRIGGING LATE!!!

Polls are about 9% of those who installed XP on their Macs are thrilled with it.

And with all the severe security issues affecting Mac OS X since it was released, there will be virtually no difference between it and Vista, in fact Vista may be more secure according to what I read.

Then it will be announced, Apple was working with Microsoft for the last five years on Vista and it will be now sold on Mac's in all those fancy Apple stores.

YOU WATCH, strange things are happening in Cupertino.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:31 am Comment from: Software Developer to Mac users

Just boot Windows.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:36 am Comment from: MacAbusre

Running Windows OS on a Mac is like shitting on your own doorstep anyway......LOL

Mar 21, 06 - 12:38 am Comment from: Mark

I think Apple is sending this hidden signal:

Developers can keep coding for the PPC Mac majority and for those minority folks who want Mac OS X on their MacTels.

But eventually Windows will be the majority OS sold on Mac's.

Apple doesn't want to kill hardware sales off right away by making a full announcement of the Windows transition.

So they are using comments like, "well we won't do anything to stop them from runnning Windows on Mac's"

Apple has done many things to protect it's monopoly in online music/iPod combination by not licensing their DRM for instance.

So allowing Windows on Mac's just doesn't make sense, unless they plan on becoming a PC vendor like Dell.

Steve Jobs hates Dell.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:41 am Comment from: WindowsMan

XP isn't all that bad actually, provided you know how to secure the box.

Since you Mac users now have to do that with Mac OS X, it's really a mute point.

Run more software, lots of games etc.

Mar 21, 06 - 12:43 am Comment from: R

Beleive it or not, I don't include myself in the 56%. I will continue to use Mac OS X until the Mac finally breaks down or I can't get updates anymore.

*sniff* I'm such a diehard, but confused, machead. pity me.

Mar 21, 06 - 01:23 am Comment from: justme2

After seeing what my dad-in-law has gone through in the various iterations of Windoze on his machines (including his support guru practically taking up residence to switch him from Win2K to XP), I don't need those headaches.

If I ever wanted to run Windows (highly unlikely), I'll pick up an HP laptop that I can boot up when needed then stow away out of sight when I want to do real work.

Mac OS isn't going anywhere, folks...nothing to see here, move along...

Mar 21, 06 - 01:31 am Comment from: Wow...

I think a few of you guys need to wait for puberty before you start posting online.
Those of you that have hit it, but are still stupid, please consult a responsible adult before you post.
Thanks.

Mar 21, 06 - 04:17 am Comment from: Al

I would imagine many people see running Windoze as important for one of two reasons;

1) Like me they have to use Windows for work - being able to run Windows XP means that I could use a Mac laptop at work

2) Running games

Personally I would be far more interested in a native version of Virtual PC or VMWare which means I stay in OS X and only dive into Windows when I have to.

Yeah.

I bought a Mac Mini so I could run Windows.

I also bought a Dodge minivan so I could race in the NASCAR circuit.

I voted Republican because I wanted smaller government and balanced budgets.

Now I have a computer virus that spies on me without a warrant and my vehicle's gas milage has earned me an honorary membership in the Saudi royal family.

But my fan works.
