Apple’s Mighty Mouse dissected (with image)

Apple’s Mighty Mouse has undergone a dissection at the hands of MacDailyNews reader “Sailfish.”

“Sailfish” has posted a photo album along with the explanation that, “the horizontal and diagonal scrolling wasn’t working correctly so I investigated. A good mouse, I would like to see the ball button replaced with a more solid trackball w/optical sensors.”

See the whole gruesome album of Mighty Mouse’s innards here.

  1. forget the mouse, get the apple iMIND!! the computer control chip installed in your brain. Watch as the mouse moves around the screen with no physical input! watch applications open like magic!! AND get it installed for free by a MAC GENIUS at any local apple store!!! WOOOO

  2. I love the “it’s just a mouse people” comments..

dude.. this was a headline on MSNBC (arguably, not a real network, but hey)..

    who’s fault is that?

is it Bill Gates desperately trying to promote the thing? no.

people love reading about apple because they do things that are interesting. stop acting so surprised.

Big deal. Any mouse will work w OS X. But this is the first by apple, and you have to admit, it is different than any other multi-button mouse.

in a few days.. it will quiet down

  3. Thelonious, don’t worry the 3.0 Ghz argument will be moot by next year. So people can stop whining!
Now two less excuses to not to own a mac, people can shove their multi button mouse and the 3 Ghz arguments and shove ’em up their arses!

MW: means as in This means shut the f*ck up with idiotic arguments!

  4. theloniousmac said “Are we so ashamed that we don’t even have 3.0GHz machines that all we can do is make a big deal about a stupid mouse?”

Yes, Lonious, along with making false claims that Vista was copied using OS X as a template…why dont you thow up your food (opinion) on people using linux, or, something..

  5. Really bothers you, doesn’t it, Thelonious…

Here is my single step solution to your on-going frustration:

    (1) If the article mentions a mouse, DON’T CLICK ON IT.

Yes, by following that quick and easy single step, you will prevent a sudden “health concern” from befalling you!

(I might add that the above Step will also work successfully with the forthcoming Apple A/C Adapter articles.)

  6. You know, I think its funny how after years and years of Jobs spewing his benchmarks to the world on CPU power, He switches to Intel and says “Its soo much faster”. God, you people really are dumber than you look.

mw = iCon (Steve Jobs)the greatest 51st act of our generation.

  7. Yes, Maciontosh Defense Network is at it again!

Fine = A mac isnt like a fine Wine, or a Fine Automobile. Its more like a fine women, You get her, then she manipulates you and takes all of your money.

  8. “Are we so ashamed that we don’t even have 3.0GHz machines that all we can do is make a big deal about a stupid mouse?”

Thats the problem. Most of you guys have tied your sense of self respect so closely to your OS choice that you seemingly have to defend it all the time. Who gives a crap if there arent 3.0 Ghz G5’s. While all you worry warts pine over the lack of something to give you bragging right over your PC buddies, the rest of us are using what we have now to do actual stuff.

  9. I find this perpetual type of scenario interesting – and by interesting, I mean IRRITATING.

Self-identified ‘non-Zealot’ Mac user: “You Zealots should use a two-button mouse!

SINZMA-named ‘MacZealot’: “Apple is concerned about the HIG, thus the one-button mouse.”

Self-identified ‘non-Zealot’ Mac user: “You zealots are a closed-minded bigots, bent on hurting Apple.”

SINZMA-named ‘MacZealot’: You can call me a ‘Enemy of Apple’ all you want. I am not. I want Apple to be Apple.”

Apple: “Hey, we now have ‘Mighty Mouse'”.

Self-identified ‘non-Zealot’ Mac user: “I fscking told you so!”

    SINZMA-named ‘MacZealot’: “Hooray, for Apple!”

Self-identified ‘non-Zealot’ Mac user: “Simmer down, it’s only a frickin’ mouse!”

SINZMA, perhaps, your Lithium dose is far too conservative. Check with your MD.

  10. I think Apple did a wonderful job, they integrated more features into a one button mouse concept that’s not intimidating to new users of computers.

The one button can be the default “out of the box” setup and no newbie will know any better.

However the ball button is soft, lose in the “hole”, it loses traction, at least for me it did on the horizontal scrolls. I couldn’t do “360º’s” scrolls either.

We used have to clean dirty mouseballs and rollers before optical mice came along, so I don’t know how this will fair. 🙁

I think a hard ball with some sort of optical or magnetic recognition would be better. This way a lot of grime buildup can be eliminated from getting into the “works” by a tight seal between the ball and the innerds.

Nice idea, just a bit more tweaking though.

  11. I can’t wait for mine to arrive on Friday — I ordered it from Apple as soon as it was announced. Ever since I got used to two-finger scrolling with my PowerBook, the lack of any-direction scrolling on my scroll wheel mouse has been driving me nuts.
