Apple today updated its eMac line, with two new models that now ship with Mac OS X Tiger. The eMac puts the whole computer — including 17-inch (16-inch viewable) flat CRT display, 18-watt speakers, 56K modem and optical drive — into a single, attractive package.
The new Apple eMac 17-inch ComboDrive, US$799.00 includes:
• 17-inch flat CRT display
• 1.42GHz PowerPC G4
• 256MB DDR333 SDRAM
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive
• Combo drive
• ATI Radeon 9600; 64MB dedicated DDR SDRAM video memory
• 56k internal modem
The new Apple eMac 17-inch SuperDrive, $999 includes:
• 17-inch flat CRT display
• 1.42GHz PowerPC G4
• 512MB DDR333 SDRAM
• 160GB Ultra ATA drive
• 8x SuperDrive (double-layer)

Yes, the CRT is still alive. I work with lots of schools, and most of them simply do not want to put an LCD in a lab situation with a bunch of elementary schoolers. The eMac is ideal for them.
Looks like the new eMac’s will be CoreImage compliant… very cool….

I do not mind CRTs but I wish that Apple made the eMac widescreen. Anyway, it is great to see dual layer DVD and a new graphics system included in the package.
I wonder how Doom 3 will run on it.
What’s with the G4? Why not a G5 eMac?
Yeah, let’s get the Doom 3 benchmarks up on those elementary school machines. Those energetic little 5-year-olds sure love a good killing rampage!
And the flashcards-per-minute benchmark too, let’s get that up. And the Reader Rabbit high score.
These guys don’t really need high-performance machines. They need stability, ease of use, well designed system security (to prevent kids from dragging apps to the trash, etc.), and so on. They need Macs.
Hey ummm… how loud are the fans on the newer eMacs? My mom has an 800MHz eMac with a huge fan in the back and well… for once being deaf had it’s advantages. I still feel a bit aprehensive about recommending an eMac to someone who’s never owned a computer, anybody know how loud these things are now?
It’s nice to see the eMac being what it is – the EDUCATION Mac. Thank you Mac Mini for relieving it of the burdon of being the Mac for everyone!!!!

Only surprise is that they’ve left the base model with 256MB RAM.
I expected the whole line to go to a 512MB base post-Tiger.
