Apple has sent out invitations via email to selected media outlets announcing a special event on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 to be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
The email features the line, “1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.”
Apple introduced the iPod on October 23, 2001, describing the device as “a breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket.”

Video iPod. or iTunes Phone. or something else. These are the possibilities. Nothing else. Exiting.
This better be ROKR…my phone is on it’s last legs. Been waiting on this since MacWorld in January. Motorola is getting my money either way, ROKR or RAZR, but I would rather have iTunes capability.
MDN Magic Word “cannot” as in I cannot wait to buy my new phone!
Wow! I can’t wait!
Wake me when there is news about Mac computers, YAAAAAAAAAWN!!!! Apple has become 95% iPod/iTunes and 5% Mac computers. Good news for shareholders I suppose, but bad news for us Mac zealots who think of iPods as one of many neat Mac periperhals and not the primary product of a one-time computer company.
I think it’ll be the phone.
This would have been exciting 10 months ago…. <sigh>
If there is a big announcement now, what about the one in Paris later on in the month?
“Wake me when there is news about Mac computers, YAAAAAAAAAWN!!!! Apple has become 95% iPod/iTunes and 5% Mac computers. Good news for shareholders I suppose, but bad news for us Mac zealots who think of iPods as one of many neat Mac periperhals and not the primary product of a one-time computer company.”
That’s what Apple expo Paris will be for.
As far as this event is concerned, I think it will be much more than a phone. I think we’ll finally get iTunes 5 and the 5th generation iPod
some changes to AppleCare for non-US customers. And maybe new pricing on cables and adaptors.
Can’t wait for wed!
A new study said that contrary to expectations, phones that take pictures incresed digital camera sales.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050829/tc_nm/cameraphones_dc
Could phones that download music have a comparable effect on iPod sales?
“…what about the one in Paris later on in the month?”
Two words: “Dual Core”
Yeah this is the phone, and before everyone starts “yawning” remember that Apple is known for pulling rabbits out of hats. I’m looking forward to it.
Sounds more like the video iPod or iFlix or whatever, since they’re comparing its impact to the original iPod launch. No way that ho-hum Motorola phone with 25 to 100 songs on it qualifies.
I do not think there will be any new iPods. The education promotion for a free iPod mini with the purchase of a Mac does not end until 9/24, so we will not see any new iPods before this promotion ends. This has got to be the iTunes phone.
Winston is right
If this is just a “special event,” it’s not likely to be a major new Apple product like video on iPod. Much more likely to be the phone, which Motorola has said will be ready in September and should have its own “event.”
Meh. Too many false starts. Unless there’s real synergy and not just phone + mp3s (which I’ve had in my pocket for a year now), this will be anti-climactic.
Anything big & totally new would be announced at a Macworld or similar major event.
No, Winston is not right. They are not comparing the impact of this announcement to anything. They simply said… here we go again.
A major announcement will compe at Apple Paris expo and not before…
“Anything big & totally new would be announced at a Macworld or similar major event.”

Think different.
I’m not surprised at all. thie event was supposed to held few months ago. it will be damn bloody phone. that’s all. but I won’t buy it.
It’s definitely time for Motorola to announce. Too bad it won’t be 1,000 songs in your cellphone.
clean the fog off your glasses
OSX Mobile
will run on iTunes phone, iPod Video, and iTablet
Welcome to the revolution.
FAR OUT STUFF:-
Apple Digital Camera (it will come eventually)
iPod Video (not on screen movies – more play thru)
New Airport/Home Device
REALITY:-
MotoPodoFono
iTunes Subscriptions
…iYawn
…its all up in the ‘air’…
I would be more inclined to “think different” if the current iPod promotion ended on say 9/6.. but since it is still going till 9/24 there is no way they will announce a new iPod. Apple never continues a promotion on an old product once a new one has been introduced..
from appleinsider.com:
“Sources had previously reported that Motorola and Apple would use the 7th of September to unveil the first of Motorola’s iTunes ROKR cell phones.”
iTunes phone IMO doesn’t “change everything” the way the iPod did. I find it hard to believe that Apple would promote the ROKR in this way. They only rumored products that fit this category would be an iPod Video, but more importantly a 5.0 iTunes with Video and other media downloads for a fee (disney, ABC, ESPN, Pixar?, other movies?). If it is only the phone then I must put more faith in the Apple marketing team than they deserve. The phone alone certainly doesn’t change everything and isn’t anything unexpected at all.
Oh that’s right. Rio was going to do that one…
I sure hope it’s the long awaited iTunes Phone (yawn) so we won’t have to see more iTunes Phone related rumors.
I don’t want Apple to make a digital camera. They have neither the expertise or resources to make good lenses etc. The iSight is a good webcam but it is a long way off from what is needed for still photography. Plus there are a lot of established players in the market and Apple have got most to work well with OS X, so there is no need for a Apple solution.
An airport / home device would be interesting. Really need a simple solution to clean up all the wires from behind my new TV. It’s getting worse than my old G4 sawtooth.
“1000 songs- Here we go again.” Get it? 1000 songs in your pocket again!
It has to be a super thin flash based colour screened 4GB mini- 1000 songs in your tightest pocket.
>cem-Video iPod. or iTunes Phone. or something else. These are the possibilities. Nothing else. Exiting.>
Are you leaving cem? Or did you mean exciting?
Here comes the launch of IpodMotion. Itunes Music Producer, Motorola Itunes Phone and a Video camera that films and saves in high definition to a large on board hard drive Using the Processor contracted to be made by that British Company…..I Hope
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Ok it could be two things.
1: The iPhone
2: A larger flash based iPod Shuffle
I think it’s the iPhone, and Apple has it so their Mac’s can access it easily through iTunes, not only that, it will be possible to surf via the mobile phone as well.
The mobile phone can only store so much and a iPhone seems to fit the bill.
Also the iPod shuffle could be seeing a update along with larger iPods.
The fifth generation iPod would match the 5th version of iTunes.
I would like to see the iPod store video from a cam.
I would like to give you all a sneak peak at what we are doing on the 7th of September. Thank you all for being Mac Fans and supporting Apple through Good and Bad times. I will announce a new product thios day that should really interest all of you. We have been working hard to bring you all this product and we expect you all to; as always, Bend over and take it like the men you are as you have time and time again. Please keep your eyes pealed for the glorious event in which we will out innovate every company that ever was.
Redmond, start your copier’s, again!

I’m hoping for video – if not a video iPod, at least AirPort Express with Video and an iFlix store like what was mentioned above. (A “tablet” universal remote would be nice too.)
But, it’s probably the phone.
Of course, it’s the bloody phone. YAY!
I’m saving up for the ultimate in portability: the iPad!
Newton’s grown-up tablet-style rightful progeny.
If I’m right about how much $, and how long, then I’ll have one next fall.
Sigh.
The iPod promotion/rebate only applies to certain models. You can apply the equivalent of an iPod mini only to any other current model. If they announce something new, it is already excluded from that deal, and will in all likelihood not ship for a few weeks.
This does not sound like the moto-iPhone. It sounds much bigger.
Hey, Steve J…. Safari has an integrated spelling dictionary. Guess you must be typing on a peecee…
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
“Apple Digital Camera (it will come eventually)”
Why would Apple make a digital camera? There are tons of them out there, so it wouldn’t be very innovative.
However, ten years ago, when digital cameras *were* innovative, Apple did make one: the QuickTake.
Hey bscepter,
Since Steve J has to keep paying for antivirus & anti-spyware and all the apps that are a pae imitation of iLife, I think he’s using a FeeCee!
MW = Hot, and a FeeCee’s not
It would be pretty disappointing if it just turns out to be the Motorola phone. That thing has been hyped to death. I am hoping for a video iPod and an iTunes Video Store.
not the phone… they said
“1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.”
so what would they be changing if they put 1000 songs in your cell phone thats in your pocket?
Is that 1000 songs in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?
“YAAAAAAAAAWN!!!! Apple has become 95% iPod/iTunes and 5% Mac computers”
Yeah, the Intel announcement was so minor
Apple invented consumer-level digital cameras with the QuickTake. They had a dedicated “Imaging”-something department back then. Then they moved onto other areas when the market matured. Years later, they introduced the Firewire-based iSight camera, but there hasn’t been much discussion about their imaging department, which I think was dissolved.
I have high hopes for the Moto-iTunes phone. It’s more fun that way. I can’t afford one anyway.
Video iPod. or iTunes Phone. or something else. These are the possibilities. Nothing else. Exiting

Duh, it’s socks for your iPod shuffle.
The device that does it all and does it well. iTunes, pictures, video, e-mail and voice. Moto helped them out with the cell phone part. Time to eBay the cell phone, Blackberry, Palm and MS mobile device. 2, 4 and 6 GB flash memory.
For Mac + Windows
Bring your own wireless plan.
$199
$299
$399
Not a phone. Separate Motorola event for that.
Not a new Mac. Those will be at MacWorld Paris.
Could be a new iPod but would have to be dramatic change like wifi or video. But if video, it will be a major change in form factor so you can actually watch it. But don’t think so. Just transporting video is not revolutionary. So no. Maybe wifi but not hearing any rumors.
But here are the signs and rumors:
1. iTunes and iTMS incorporates video.
2. iTunes and iTMS incorporates podcasts – think automated delivery of personally-selected list of casts – think show or movie instead of pod.
3. Jobs says it’s the year of HD.
4. QT7 and H.264 released.
5. Apple makes deal for H.264 chips from Broadcom.
6. Apple hires Xbox live subscription exec from Microsoft.
7. Xbox 3 coming in Nov with “living-room set-top box” capabilities.
8. HDTVs selling really well – with lower prices expected in fall.
9. Disney, Universal, Paramount in talks with Apple about online video. (rumor)
10. Apple makes known it’s working on remote control for AE.
11. Bonjour proven with AE.
What might it point to? A set-top box running iTunes-like software for online video downloads (videocasts, movies) from iTMS. Comes with a remote control. Wifi network to Mac or PC using bonjour. Replaces the DVD player, broadcast TV, and PVR.
This is NOT the phone. That’s such a non-event.
It’s obviously the VIDEO IPOD!!!
Why else mention 1,000 SONGS in your pocket. it’s the next step….not some crappy phone that appeals to .00001% of users. i have a cell phone. i don’t need another one and wouldn’t use one to listen to songs on. that’s stupid.
it’s the iPod video, i guarantee it.
If it is an iPod video with iTMS video/PVR/DVD/Quicktime/Divx/photo/music capabilities Apple is gonna get my dough. Even if it isn’t in iPod form factor and instead was a set top box by my entertainment center I would find the product worth my purchase. All the capability above combined with Apple’s ease of use would be very pleasant. Add the touch of a remote control resembling a thin iPod and Apple will have people clamoring for it, myself included.
Perhaps OS X for phones and PDA’s to blow Windows CE and Symbian away.
Seamless connect to your mac.
Seamlessly…
Then next week Motorola can launch their phone running not just mini iTunes but OS X without all the extra apps.
That would be big. The phone has been delayed too long. but if it is running a version of OS X, it could allow more people to try OS X. Inkwell has been running on OS X but not many people can use it. But on a phone/PDA it would be very usefull.
iTunes capable phones are likely, video capable iPods are a maybe. I would prefer to see the Australian iTunes Music Store get launched.
It’s not about the Motorola iTunes phone. Surprise! It’s all about the iPod. You’re going to see a revamped Shuffle, the way it should have been released in the first place – a larger capacity plus a display. QuickTime 7 for Windows is gonna ship shortly, ao hang tight and cuz the year of HD will finally be revealed.
The Motorola iTunes phone will come later at a separate launch in NY. The Queen of Re-invention and marketing ______ (you decide) will be the celeb helming the launch. Unfortunately, her riding accident screwed up the schedule for filming the Motorola commercial. Little Richard will also be in a commercial for the phone. Madonna’s new all dance album “Confessions on a Dance Floor” will be dropping in early November, however the first single called “Hung Up” will be part of the marketing campaign and will be heard in September. Her catalog will finally be available on iTunes as well.
Peace
ITG
I’m thinking that it could be Apple made a deal either with XM or Sirius so that the new iPods can now broadcast satellite radio. Maybe also that iTunes will broadcast XM or Sirius programming in addition to the internet radio stations already available on it.
Hey Steve – Focus on the real machines. Why the hanging beachball on latest G5 iMac when maxed out on ram? Don’t forget your core. Your loyal fanbase makes no commissions of switchers, we were preaching before iPod. Don’t let us down. The Meat is the Mac! (No vegeterian pun intended)
There’s only four months left in the Year of HD. I think it’s iFlicks HD, along with the remote to control it. “10,000 movies in your TV.”
It seems pretty clear from the ad – Scotty has it right. The announcement will be a new iPod that will fit in the watch pocket in the photo. That follows from the text (what we did before, we’ll do even smaller now) which focuses on 1000 songs and the size factor.
Coupled with the large order for 4GB flash drives, it seems to me that the new product will be an iPod micro with a size factor that fits in a watch pocket. It should have a screen as well, since it will fit between the shuffle and the mini form factor. The mini line will move to higher capacity hard drives (also shown by recent orders for 8GB drives).
It is going to be quicktime 7 for PC and maybe something else like makeing the powerbooks faster or makeing all computers come with a DVD burning drive standard. It is the 7th and quicktime 7 it will come out along with some other stuff!
The event is the official launch of Motorola’s iTunes phone. There are events in New York, Berlin and Hong Kong. I’m not aware of anything more than that. Invitations have gone out and everyone is excited. This is THE phone to have for Christmas.
