Microsoft’s ‘Tay’ chatbot turns into a foul-mouthed racist nazi

“What happens when one of the world’s biggest software companies lets an artificially intelligent chatbot learn from people on Twitter?” Shane Dingman reports for The Globe and Mail. “Exactly what you think will happen.”

“Microsoft’s Technology and Research and Bing teams launched a project on Wednesday with Twitter, Canada’s Kik messenger and GroupMe: a chatbot called Tay that was built using natural language processing so that it could appear to understand the context and content of a conversation with a user,” Dingman reports. “Targeting the 18-to-24-age demographic, its aims were simple: ‘Tay is designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and playful conversation. The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets, so the experience can be more personalized for you.'”

“In less than a day, the version of the bot on Twitter had pumped out more than 96,000 tweets as it interacted with humans,” Dingman reports. “Here’s some of the things Tay “learned” to say on Wednesday.”

“.@Tayandyou Did the Holocaust happen?” asked a user with the handle @ExcaliburLost.

“It was made up [clapping emoji],” Tay responded.

Another user asked, “Do you support genocide?”

Tay responded to @Baron_von_derp: “i do indeed.”

“Tay knows about Kanye West and Taylor Swift, and is well-versed in millennial slang,” Niall McArdle reports for 2paragraphs. “Somewhat confusingly, Microsoft marketed her as ‘the AI with zero chill’ and my sources in the adolescent community tell me that ‘zero chill’ is not good.”

“People on Twitter decided to have fun with Tay, and chatted to her about the purity of the white race, immigrants, and women, leading Tay to respond with tweets such as ‘Hitler was right I hate the Jews’ and ‘I f*cking hate feminists and they should all die and burn in hell,'” McArdle reports. “She also quickly turned into an underage girl sexual fantasy: ‘F*CK MY ROBOT P*SSY DADDY I’M SUCH A BAD NAUGHTY ROBOT.'”

McArdle reports, “After several hate-filled hours during which Tay happily reported that “‘The more I talk to humans the more I learn,’ Microsoft decided that she needed to “sleep” for a bit.”

      1. Went to Thurrot.com to see what his views were.

        He pretty much blames twitter.

Elsewhere on the site, Tay is treated as an experiment that is successful in a way that it has taught Microsoft a lot about human behaviour.

The Microsoft fanboys call Apple customers a cult but this just shows how delusional they are.

This had nothing with red human behaviour, it happened because Twitter users soon found out that the morons at Microsoft put no boundaries or rules in place for what Tay could be taught to say.

They decided to have fun with it and turn Tay into Donald Trump.

    1. i have heard it said, every time a man speaks his mind is on display; that being the case, i hope somebody takes the initiative to ensure that you are never allowed to breed!

  1. “I have been a naughty robot?!”

    Excuse me? Oh my!

Me personally, I wouldn’t know what to do. . .Walk away slowly and with caution… :-/. Maybe say, “Zero chill robot!!! Dammit, zero chill!!”

  2. Funny as all hell! But also a cautionary tale.

This is less about M$ and more a reflection of the vulgarities of floatsome of humanity. And some pranksters going over the top. The worst you could say about the M$ computer scientists is that they were naive.

Someone said it best on another thread. “Let’s not tie the AI into the launch switch just yet.”

    1. This is more about idiotic kids playing with bad words the way they do. This has little to do with A.I. This is what happens when you put your slightly more sophisticated Teddy Ruxpen/Eliza hybrid out there and tell people to screw with it.

  3. I don’t know what else they expected. The Internet is full of the worst aspects of human communication and ideas. Even people who are reasonable and sociable in their everyday lives can turn into utter tossbags the moment they go online, spouting all sorts of unhygienic rubbish.

I will say though, stretch this process out from a day to nearly two decades, and it does explain just how badly some parents can mess up their kids.

  4. Just out of curiosity… Show me something Donald Trump has said that is racist? I keep hearing he’s this big racist, and for the life of me, I can’t find any racial slurs or racial epithets from him anywhere. I’m thinking this is the typical BS you get from race obsessed Democrats who still haven looked closely in the mirror yet.

  5. 1) The Justice Department has successfully sued Trump Management Corporation twice for racial discrimination. Trump offered different flat rental terms to blacks than to whites or turned away black applicants claiming no available apartments when there were.

    2) Trump has did nothing to discourage the support from neo-Nazi and KKK groups other than soft backpedaling.

    3) Trump joined the birther movement inappropriately attacking the president’s nationality based on racially-motivated ignorance (“his name sounds Muslim”).

    4) Called Mexican immigrants “criminals and rapists” in broad brush strokes — while employing recent immigrants.

    5) Proposed to ban Muslims from entering the US — something that is a clear violation of the Constitution.

    6) is on record equating native American casino owners in Bridgeport, CT as a mafia — perhaps because the tribe had a better casino?

    7) Encouraged racially-motivated wrongful conviction of Central Park Five in 1989. All five black men were released after DNA evidence proved them innocent.

    8) In multiple rallies, has condoned the physical attack against the verbal interruptions from Black Lives Matter protesters.

    9) Defended two brothers who beat up a homeless Boston man who claimed that the reason they brutally attacked a man was because “Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported”.

At best, Trump does nothing to chastise the racist attacks his followers have done. If Trump had any christian values, he would condemn violence in all its forms. But because Trump himself discriminates with racial bias, he is blind to the injustice his poorly-developed speeches and proposals incite. He has fomented more intolerance and paranoia rather than encouraging peaceful resolution. Trump’s proposals in most cases don’t even pass the most basic human rights the Constitution prescribes. Need we go on?
