Apple’s dainty iPhone SE purportedly appears at electronics market in China

“Apple’s newest iPhone is believed to be coming at an event March 21,” Amanda Kooser reports for CNET. “That means the usual flurry of rumors surrounding the updated smartphone is turning into a full-blown blizzard of speculation, hints and leaks.”

“A video published Monday purports to show the new iPhone SE in the wild in China,” Kooser reports. “The iPhone SE, if that’s what it ends up being called, is rumored to be a smaller phone with a 4-inch screen designed to replace the iPhone 5S for people who don’t want a plus-sized model.”

“The video comes from a YouTube user by the name of Nick Beeep. Beeep.co is an under-construction crowdtesting site for products. Nick Xu is the founder. Xu visited a vendor at a market in Huaqiangbei Shenzhen in China, an area known as the ‘Silicon Valley of Hardware,'” Kooser reports. “Xu told CNET he heard about the iPhone’s presence at the market and asked to shoot a video of it. The sellers didn’t agree at first, but later changed their minds and allowed the filming. As with any leak, we have to temper the excitement with some caution. It’s possible the phone is a knock-off rather than the real deal.”

    1. Ah, yes, rose gold. As John Oliver wisely quipped, it looks like someone barfed their salmon dinner in a dirty ballet slipper.

When is someone at Apple going to offer black again? Black anodized aluminum is easy and, unlike hideous gold, matches very well with any outfit or accessories that most people in the world wear.

But then, I guess most of us have no idea what color accessories Tim Cook wears behind closed doors. That could explain the sudden interest in feminine colors in iPhone cases too.

  1. Hmmm, if the latest rumors are true reg. the antennae bands…looks like this “ripoff” / clone has the bands in the original location, meaning the WRONG location.

    1. …adding to my post: I know the antennae rumors are primarily about the new iPhone 7, but I can’t imagine Apple not changing the band location on the 7 and not the new to be released “5E” or whatever it will be called.

      1. Sadly I can, they would not wish to have the run of the mill phone launch the new for 2016 aspects for their new phones they will want to launch them with these for impact and status and then let them wash down to these ‘lesser’ models. Otherwise they would all be launched at the same time so that the bottom end model didn’t have a newer ‘look’ to the premium ones. So would be a big U turn if they decided to pre empt those with this model which for Apple is a need rather than a wish to produce to purely keep sales up by filling a perceived gap. Very Apple to say ok you can have one but only if you accept compromises, or alternatively pay out more for what we actually want to sell you.

  2. This “iPhone” SE is not an Apple product. You can see the fit and finish in this still I too from the video that the color of the Rose Gold doesn’t match the Apple rose gold of the actual iPhone 6S on the right.

It is not the subtle color of the Apple but a harsher red gold. Also the casing around the ports is inset too far for both the lightening port and the earphone jack. Also you can see down inside the earphone jack that’s a standard cheap off-the-shelf jack, not a custom Apple design such as you see on the iPhone 6S with its white bezel. Similarly, you see

    1. oops. . . hit the “Post Comment” button too soon. Continuing. . .
Similarly, you can see the curved cut out around the lightening port where it shows that the metal of the fake SE’s case wall is too thick and the port itself is not flush. The white screen bezel is not a smooth fit with the case on the SE as it is on the
6S, making a distinct inside corner as it transfers from aluminum case to glass bezel. The bezel itself seems to be identical to the 5S bezel, in both size and openings, which is highly unlikely. It is most likely what we have here is a re-cased iPhone 5S, where some enterprising Chinese shop has taken the innards of an iPhone 5S, and inserted them into a new RoseGold aluminum case. . . or just put a 5S screen on said case.

      1. I think you are likely right for in the video I noticed stood vertically with the others it was slightly larger than the 5S which struck me as unlikely but would be explained by the extra thickness of the curved case they use. I think you may have nailed it.
