Has Dr. Dre’s drunken boast cost his company $3.2 billion?

“We haven’t heard anything official about its supposed $3.2 billion purchase of Beats from Apple yet and now Billboard reports there’s a good reason for that,” Brad Reed reports for BGR.

“According to Billboard’s sources, Apple was not at all happy about a video posted by actor Tyrese Gibson where a couple of weeks ago in which Beats founder and hip-hop legend Dr. Dre boasts about becoming ‘the first billionaire in hip-hop,'” Reed reports. “Apple was also probably not happy to hear that Gibson said that Dre was ‘drunk off of Heinekens’ in the video, which was posted on Gibson’s Facebook page right after news broke that Apple would be buying Beats for $3.2 billion.”

“Apparently, the Apple family near imploded with outrage when that video went up on Facebook of an ‘excited’ Dr. Dre with R&B singer/former Coca Cola pin-up Tyrese,” Yinka Adegoke reports for Billboard. “In the video they share, in language perhaps unsuitable for a family blog, how Dre will be hip-hop’s first billionaire and other nice things about Compton.”

“People often forget that despite Apple being this company that makes sexy products, with sexy profit margins, and sexy retail outlets…it is not in fact a very sexy company,” Adegoke reports. “It is a conservative company, particularly without the leadership of its guiding light Steve Jobs who would shake things up massively on a daily basis. This is not the kind of thing Apple is used to.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote when the video first came to light: “Historically, the best way to lock up a deal with Apple is to make a YouTube video about it and prematurely blast it all over online. Apple absolutely loves that sort of stuff.”

  1. Tim has been making good hires. He blew his first one when he hired the person with wrong culture fir retail he stands to do that here again if this guy has any future involvement with Apple. Time to just walk away from him. If there are other parts and people worth having ok but walk away from him this time do what Steve would do and it’s right to boot

    1. Dre is the antithesis of Arendts. Apple has been picking up some good talent. I’m an old fart as are a lot of Apple customers and I’ve never listened to a full Rap song and never intend to. A lot of parents do not want their kids exposed to the abusive language and cultural norms espoused in Rap.

Many in the “hood” buy Samsung anyway.

  2. If this deal is lost over faux pas rather than for business reason, a competitor (say Samsung) who wants to build out their content delivery system will be tipped about the possible value of a Beats acquisition. They would be pounding down their doors.

    1. Don’t mistake the media representation of “all these black people” for what black people really think. Your buying off on a sham. I would say the general attitude among most of the black folks I’ve happened to talk to is, “So what’s new?” or “Who gives a s&*T.”

    2. It’s not that “all the black people”, are upset with with the Sterlings. Sterling screwed up. As an Agent of the “The Protocols”, he let the cat out of the bag on how race relations are handled in America. Blacks at the bottom. Empower any other race except them. Judging from the comments on this forum, it works like a charm.

    1. Was just thinking the same and totally agree.

The most unified MDN opposition I have seen with the highest number of all-positive ratings by multiple commentators.

Which brings me to my final point on this subject.

      Just walk, Apple …

  3. I got a pair of Beats headphones for Christmas. Are you allowed to say “Beats” without the modifier “Motherf***ing,” or can you truncate the term for polite company? I’m never sure about the proper etiquette for these situations.

  4. It seems that Dr. Dre’s posse frum da hood failed to tell him to “Shut Da F$ck Up, Motha F$cka! ”

Seriously I think this Apple deal maybe dead due to following reasons: 1) Dr. Dre mouthing off a big buy deal before all the legal wranglings, government agencies giving their approval, and contract signed and finalized. 2)Wrongly or rightly, Dr. Dre’s boorish behavior did make Apple rethink if their image would be hurt if people saw one of Beats spokeman is drunk and swearing. 3) Most pundits and Apple consumers were not to thrill since many felt Beats is average speakers, headphones that have a high price due to just name recognition.

  5. Apple really does not need Beats, Dr. Dre or Jimmy Iovine.

As a reminder, here is how Beats treated some of their former business partners:

    http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/may/21/beats-dr-dre-iovine-royalties-sues

So doing a deal with them will likely not go well and can result in a painful separation, if not litigation. But besides their questionable business practices, there is really nothing that Beats, Dr. Dre or Jimmy Iovine have that Apple can’t do on their own and significantly improve without their involvement.

    Stay tuned.

  6. I don’t get why Apple even wants Beats. Those headphones are plastic junk. If Apple wants to make headphones, buy some good ones like Parrot Zik. They sell them at the Apple Store online so it’s not like they are unheard of. Best headphones I’ve ever had.

  7. Although, the video is rather cringe worthy to say the least!…It might be worth carefully pointing out that Dr Dre is NOT the one being referred to as being “drunk” from consuming Heinekens! 😉 Also…it could be argued that the video in itself, points to no violation of disclosure! Although he (Dr Dre!) brags about “..being the first billionaire in hip hop..”, at no point were the terms Apple and Acquisition once mentioned in the video??? Something to consider! 😉
