So, how many iPhones did Apple sell last quarter?

“This is the unit sales number that matters most to Apple — the one for the product that accounted for nearly 53% of the company’s total revenue last quarter,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“And despite all the talk of a worldwide slowdown in high-end smartphone sales that followed the launch this spring of Samsung’s Galaxy S4, the consensus among the 45 Apple analysts we’ve heard from so far is that iPhone sales continued to grow — albeit in single digits — in the June quarter,” P.E.D. reports. “The average estimate among these 28 Wall Street professionals and 17 amateurs is that Apple will report sales of 27.15 million iPhones for fiscal Q3 2013, up 4.3% from last year’s 26.03 million.”

P.E.D. reports, “It’s not the 113% growth Apple reported two years ago, or even the 28% growth it reported last year. But considering that the three models Apple is selling — the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 — are 9 months, 21 months and 36 months old, respectively, it’s remarkable that sales are growing at all.”

  1. My theory is that Apple is deliberately stalling product introductions and announcements so that Samsung doesn’t know what to copy. Once more of the public realizes how incapable Samsung is of true innovation, Apple will make their plans known.

    1. Exactly what I’ve been wondering about. Is it possible that Apple is holding back on any new product categories until they divest themselves of the Samsung parasite? They are certainly making an effort to do so.

    2. Apple is a business. This isn’t a game. Apple’s competitor’s don’t have to lose for Apple to win.

Apple hasn’t “stalled” anything. Look at their release cycle history and you’ll see it’s fairly consistent. This is true both with new products as well as refreshed/upgraded products.

Too many times here I see comments from people who are saying Apple should do something, not because it’s good for their business or even because it’s the product that we want, but rather because as a game, it would be fun to do that to the competition.

Apple isn’t going to stop growing its business to embarrass Samsung.

      1. Samsung does release new phone models fairly frequently, but many of the variations are predominantly cosmetic in nature, or are minor tweaks for AT&T, Verizon, etc. Apple calls all of its iPhone 5 models the same thing – the differences are buried in the model number. Yet another product simplification by our favorite consumer electronics company.

  2. @MDN Reader. Your kidding right!! iphone are so behind Android and Samsung at this stage that Apple just have run outta ideas. Samsung Phones are so feature packed that its immpossible to ever use them all. Have you seen Samsungs smart TVs. Will you try and tell us that Apple were the smart Tv inventers now? Im sorry, Samsung are so far advanced now in all areas that it will take another revolutionary product by any company to knock them off their perch. Apple had theirs, but its no longer revolutionary now is it?

    1. I hope that was sarcastic… unless you’re a paid schill, in which case, seriously? have you ever tried to actually use all those “features”? they don;t work very well…
It’s sad that a 3 yr old iphone4 outsells and works better than samsungs newest stuff, They’ve been copying since 2008 and still haven’t gotten better than the 3gs in terms of over all performance… try using an S4 sometime, it’s awful, and that’s an improvement.

        1. True, in a narrow minded view. Samsung didnt get the either just by selling s3’s. They also cater to bottom feeders as well which goes towards their overall sales figures. This doesn’t give a true indication as apple only sells top shelf models.

    2. Who would have though, a paid Samsung blogger from Australia?

Do you get a discount on those plastic fantastic S4s? Does it annoy you when most of those new Features don’t work worth a damn? How many viruses, Trojans and the like do you have on your phone? Do you spend much on anti-virus apps?

I wouldn’t use that android crap if you paid my phone bill and gave me new phones for free every 6 months.

    3. That’s great, a device full of features I’ll never use, that’s the real definition of a great product.

As has been shown over and over again, Apple’s “competitors” pack their devices full of “features” and advertise them with a spec list a mile long, but they forget to actually focus on the things people will actually use on a day to day basis.

    4. Are really believing yourself dude, samdung could put a sink on their dumb phones and reAlly think they are innovating, I have seen what those “galaxy” crap really do and that’s making more people move to a better phone “iPhone”, I have seen those galaxy crap and seriously you think they will move any further than that wave your hand to turn a page what a crock of shit! Now as for tvs same shit with them I tried to figure this shit out every time I go to a best buy store what features I want in a TV ? Oh I know “3D and solid picture” see my friend add as much you want features and gimmicks in a TV halve of the time no one will use it, this studies has been known for years in electronics that are just made for particular thing, iPhones are just right of everything no blinking to turn pages or waving hands seriously that’s just annoying and sucks, if I see someone on the train blinking like crazy I will get up and smack him or her for being a retard on a stupid galaxy phone! So far havent came across anyone blinking like a nut on the train thank god for that.

  4. @ mdn reader

Or it could be that they are not ready to produce anything yet. If they are letting the fear of Samsung copying rule them, then they are not only harming Samsung but also their consumer and in the long-run themselves too

  5. How many iPhones did Apple sell? There’s only one answer to that question… Not nearly enough for Wall Street investors.

The Apple growth engine has stalled and shareholders are stuck on a highway to nowhere. Thanks to Timid Cook for just letting the engine stay in idle for a whole year.

  6. Lets be clear Android OS out sells IOS because it is free, but Samsung kinda smart phones are behind iPhone in sells. Please before another uninformed person states that the S4 out sells iPhone check the facts first.
