iOS-controlled Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 announced, features 720p video

“If money were no question, I would buy the recently announced Parrot AR.Drone 2.0,” Kelly Hodgkins reports for TUAW.

“No, I’d get a fleet of them and keep them in my basement, ready to fly at a moment’s notice,” Hodgkins reports. “My current arsenal of remote control planes and helicopters would be scrapped, and I would fly only the iOS-controlled AR.Drone 2.0 because it is that awesome.”

“The AR.Drone 2.0 builds on the success of the first AR.Drone and adds a 720P HD camera that lets you view the camera feed in real-time,” Hodgkins reports. “The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 will go on sale in Q2 2012 at select US retailers with a US$299 MSRP.”

  1. I saw an amazing demonstration at CES yesterday where 2 Parrot drones performed a music-synchronized aerial dance, including both horizontal and vertical axis wiggle moves, as well as 360 degree flips. The audience was amazed. All controlled from an iPhone (although this demo was obviously pre-programmed.)

  2. (1) That is a very cool video! I want one yesterday and will be buying one as soon as it is released!

    (2) They need to add a bi-directional audio link so you can talk to the hot women who like nerds flying remote control flying vehicles.

    (3) What is the actual range for remote control and video transfer? And what is the flight duration? I’ll go take a look at the website for the current model.

    (4) Apple should use a video clip from this in their advertisements and during the iPad 3 announcement event.

    (5) Too bad that this device wasn’t around to be used in place of the remote control helicopter scene in National Treasure.

  3. I want one for tower inspections.
Of course, this would require vigorous training in my off time,
at a clearing with few obstacles, say the beach on a sunny day.
(but I’m a company man and up for the challenge…)

  4. One problem. A major one! It can only fly up to
12 minutes and then has to be recharged for
90 minutes. Unacceptable. If they could double
fly time to 24 minutes, I’d buy it in a heart beat.
    It is totally cool.

    1. Why do some people insist on finishing up their posts with “Just saying”? Or for that matter, “just my 02 cents worth”? Annoying, meaningless drivel.
