Thanksgiving week: PC sales down, Apple MacBook Air sales up

“In a note to clients Thursday, Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty rattled off several reasons to explain why retail sales of personal computers in the U.S. were down 8% year over year for the week of Nov. 20 to 26, as reported by the NPD Group,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “‘But,’ Huberty concludes, ‘we believe the biggest factor is simply weaker end demand. The data so far in November suggest a steady sequential deceleration.'”

P.E.D. reports, “There was, Huberty writes, one exception to that rule: ‘Apple was a relative bright spot during the week of Thanksgiving. Unit growth rebounded to 17% Y/Y from 7% in the prior week and 10% in the prior four weeks.'”

  1. I just got a new 21″ iMac to add to a work-issued MBPro 15 that I use for video editing. If I have to be truly mobile I have an iPhone 4 or even my wife’s iPad. I don’t have a compelling reason to buy a MacBook Air… I just want one!!!!

      1. Depends. Me, I’ve been away from home for over six months for a variety of reasons. Lugging around my 15″ MBP all the time gets wearying. And for doing website, as I do, it beats my iPad. I use CODA for its brilliance at handling many tasks including transferring files. When it’s available for iPad, I will be free of the weight (as light as it is). I would love a MBA. Now I’m waiting for the end of my refresh cycle.

      2. The difference between a 2.3-pound MacBook Air and a 5.6-pound MacBook Pro is noticeable in your shoulders after you’ve been carrying a bag all day. The difference between an 11-inch MacBook Air and a 15-inch MacBook Pro is self-evident when you open it up in an airplane seat.

You get a lot for that extra 3 diagonal inches and that extra 3.3 pounds, but it’s not always worth it.

      3. I went from a 2003 17″ with a 1440X900 Screen to a 2006 15″ MBPro also with a 1400X900 screen and loved the weight loss. Then I went from the 15″ to a 13 MBAir with the same 1440X900 screen – last July and the extra weight loss made for a MUCH better MobleMe! 😉

I will take the lightweight MBAir 13″ i7 with that screen resolution every day of the week and three times on Sunday over an MBPro! I love the weight loss when traveling AND when at home!
