iOS 5.1 beta contains code for Apple’s next-gen Apple TV, codenamed ‘J33’

“iOS release history tells us that as a product in development moves even closer to release, it is assigned a proper codename,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac. “Not only an identifier like ‘3,1’ but a codename such as N94 (iPhone 4S) or K48 (original iPad). The next-generation Apple TV has reached that stage.”

“Thanks to today’s beta release of iOS 5.1, we have on our hands the codename for this new Apple TV (3,1),” Gurman reports. “The new Apple TV is rocking a the J33 codename, the second JXX product we’ve seen from Apple. The first was the J2 – a new iPad – that we discovered just last week.”

Gurman reports, “As to whether this thing has a display on it, it is too early for us to tell.”

  1. Excuse my ignorance, but J33 refers to Apple TV how?! I read the 9to5 article and still can’t make the connection. Is it just mapping the fact that ATV is the last iOS device that needs an update?

BTW, I hope this is true, b/c I LOVE my ATV and am looking for a second.

  2. I can’t wait! I have one original Apple TV and two Black Apple TV’s. It is such a great device. There are of course areas of improvement. I have over 1000 movies and it sucks scrolling through that huge list. Hopefully there are some interface tweaks. NHL CentreIce has sealed the deal too. What a great addition!

No cable left in my house 🙂

  3. Bring on the 1080p model with Wifi Direct support for peer-to-peer networking. Come ON Apple.
WiFi Direct is a killer technology and will let the networkless masses use ATV’s with their iPhones etc..(and iTV’s next year?).
