The rise and rise (and rise) of iOS; Apple poised to take over mainstream computing

iPhone “and Apple’s other mobile devices that run the iOS are succeeding beyond anyone’s predictions,” Mike Elgan reports for Computerworld. “Apple says the iOS is currently installed on more than 200 million devices.”

“In the first quarter of this year, Android phone market share declined nearly 3%, while iOS’s share rose by more than 12%. Android still has nearly half the smartphone market, and Apple significantly less than that (about 30%), Elgan reports. “These changing fortunes could represent a temporary blip caused by Apple’s availability on Verizon. Or it could be a trend. A recent survey measuring Web traffic by various devices found that some 97% of all tablet traffic in the United States comes from iPads. And if you think that’s high, the number is 100% in Japan and 99% in the UK. (The global average is 89%.)”

“The success of iOS devices thus far is nothing compared with what’s coming. One report says Apple has ordered two manufacturers to build enough iPhone 5 handsets to sell 15 million in the first month of sales. The new phone is expected to launch in August or September,’ Elgan reports. “A study coming from the Yankee Group next month finds that about 40% of all smartphone buyers in Europe say they intend to buy an iPhone next time they buy a phone. A reasonably credible rumor from a blogger in China says that China’s biggest carrier, China Mobile, will soon announce a deal to sell the iPhone 5… Apple currently dominates the tablet market, having sold 25 million iPads to date and possibly over 14 million more iPads in the third quarter. But one analyst believes Apple will sell a billion of them.”

Elgan reports, “It’s clear that Apple’s iOS is beyond successful, and threatens to dominate global mobile sales in the foreseeable future. The reason this is significant is that as Apple comes to dominate mobile computing, mobile computing increasingly dominates computing in general… In other words, Apple’s iOS is poised to take over mainstream computing.”

MacDailyNews Take: When we wrote the following a lot of people laughed: As we have always said, even as many short-sightedly waved (and continue to wave) the white flag, the war is not over. And, yes, we shall prevail… No company is invincible. Not even Microsoft.MacDailyNews Take, January 10, 2005

Who’s laughing now?

  1. Anyone who doubts this should google “Increasing returns and the new world of business” published in the Harvard Business Review in 1996. It explains how Microsoft became the de-facto standard for desktop and will help you understand how history is now repeating itself with Apple at the helm. AAPL will be the first stock with a Trillion dollar market cap.

    1. Though I would agree with Jobs, who said that for Apple to win, it is not necessary for Microsoft to lose. And, indeed, for now Microsoft posts record-breaking profits, though already lesser than that of Apple.

In the long term, however, Microsoft’s sales and profits might decline because of Apple’s advance in smartphones and, most importantly, tablets, which expected to ship in 300 million units per year in just like five years from now.

      1. Maybe put it in a different way, Apple has made MS irrelevant. MS can still succeed, just that Apple’s not on the same ball game. MS not only has to raise the bar, but change their enter strategy and get into the vertical integration game; which, is a fundamental change and I believe is beyond them.

      2. In 2012 Apple will ship over 250,000 iOS devices and in 2013 the number will exceed 350 million …..

Apple is poised to take over mainstream computing ….. The next window cycle when they switch to 8 should find a lot of switchers …..

  2. Apples iOS rise is slow and methodical, gradually building steam and thinking about their next step. Googles rise, on the other hand, is like a teen who spurted up 6 inches in a year and is all gangly and uncoordinated. Sure, he was the star of basketball team in grade 8 because of his height, but he forgot about working on his fundamentals and will be cut in high school or relegated to the bench.

  3. Ok, before we make show-offy and snarky statements about Apple, let’s wait til EVERYBODY has iOS5. I mean it’s not even out for everybody to use. iOS 5 isn’t taking over, yet. You said it yourself, Apple has 30% and Droid has near 50% of the total market share…big whoop! Til iOS 5 is on my device I’ll start looking at these numbers. Peace-

    1. not to be too snarky (my favorite quality of MDN takes), but apple dominates in every market they are in! not the US market as a whole, but keep in mind the iphone is not in the sprint or tmobile markets, nor is it in the bargain price market that android is in and has been in for quite a while. when apple does enter these additional markets, i would wager that they will dominate the US market as a whole. after all, apple did revolutionize the modern cell phone (the rest are copycats), they deserve to dominate!

    1. Ah, yes. Everyone said we were idiots to waste our money buying stock in the dying Apple after His Steveness retook the helm. I bought in at $25 and continued to buy as it went to $15. My wife said, “Don’t lose all our money.” I said, “I’ll try not to.” That was 11 years and two 2:1 splits ago.

The great part is, this isn’t the beginning of the end. Macintosh is just starting to be mainstream after 27 years. The fertilizer has not yet hit the ventilator. But it’s about to.

    1. Only an American could ignore the words ‘China’, Japan’, ‘UK’; there’s actually a whole world out there, although the mistake is easy to make when you have a sporting ‘World Series’ that only involves teams from one country.

  4. Reading the comments on the original article in Computerworld is quite entertaining. I suspect all the Apple haters who once spoke up for MS have now moved on to defend Google and Android. The bullshit they spout is almost exactly the same, just replace the words Android and Google with Windows and Microsoft and you discover these guys haven’t missed a beat.

    1. That’s why Google has become the Microsoft of Technology. It employs the same behavior, the same tactics, the same modus operandi and the same aspirational ambition to crush rivals.

    1. Any OS that is “closed” is considered a threat to the freedoms of the world and the iHaters live in fear of that. Especially an OS that Steve Jobs holds in his hands. In case you didn’t know, Steve Jobs is a evil threat to the whole computing industry. He’s irrational and inscrutable as an insane despot or dictator. The whole world is now on the brink of disaster due to iPhones and iOS and their “walled garden”.

Do you start to feel some cold chill running up your back? That’s the coming of the domination of iOS mobile computing and that threatens the very foundations of Windows hegemony. Woooo-ooh.

      1. Hmmm… I understand now. I had thought that the chill on my back was because I left the back door open. Now I know it is due to the nefarious actions of one Steve Jobs. I am turning to the beautiful openness of Google’s Android because I know that they “Do No Evil”.

      2. So it is written. Only the walled garden of iOS can create and foster evil. The open wonderland of Android, where all are free to create and modify without restriction is the one source of true goodness and lollipops and rainbows and unicorns and cotton candy.

    1. I heard Android is very big in Iran where the world’s population of faggots reside, starting from Ahmadinejad down. They like their asses poked hard over there which Google is more than happy to oblige with the ‘open your ass wide’ Android.

        1. I hate people who get offended at anything. What he said was funny to me, and probably some others. If you don’t like it, just shrug it off and move on. Humor is subjective and your opinion is not the only one that matters.

        2. I can laugh at a good joke, and if you think gay jokes are funny, humor is subjective and that’s all good. But if somebody takes offense, apologize and move on. Offending people deliberately and maliciously serves no good purpose. The additional hate and bile says more about your intelligence than about the individuals you “hate.”

  5. I love MDN. Whenever I need a lift, I just come here to see a flamewar in which 80+ percent of the comments are barely literate ad hominem attacks. Many of the rest of the comments are hate-filled bile pretending to be humor. For no reason I can explain it makes me feel better about my place in the world.

    Thanks, kids.

I saw the above in the comments on the original article.
Rephrased slightly to make more sense.

Did you know it was so easy to create Android Malware?

    1. Thats an issue on any platform where you can install software from multiple places.

Its hardly a java specific issue. I dont need the source to an app to plant malware. I could repack a native source app and plant malware just as easily in the installer.

In the case of android specifically you have to explicitly trust unknown sources for this to work. Recompiling the application is going to strip the digital signature from the. Apk file. Even if you inject it back in the hash values have been changed.

Frameworks and native code have pros and cons on each side. Historically there have been far more exploits against native code components.

        1. Absolutely not.

Its an uneducated post by someone who dosent understand how any of it works. Even the demonstration in the links conveys inaccurate information.

Thats cool and you can believe it all you want. No sweat off my nuts son

      1. “Thats an issue on any platform where you can install software from multiple places.”

Incorrect. If Android apps were only available from ONE site, à la Apple, the exact same problem remains: NO OVERSIGHT. NO VETTING. You can post the same malware apps over and over again with meagre changes because no one is paying attention. Big ‘darn’ if Google finally get the clue that your malware must be removed. Post it yet again with a new name with the signature code altered.

There is no getting away from Android Trojan malware hell at this point until Google get their act together and VET ALL ANDROID APPS; or until all Android users have anti-malware running in real time on their devices, slowing them down and eating battery life. Kaspersky likes that! 😆

  7. I’d like to shake the hand of the man that wrote this article. I’ll be able to short Apple down at least $5 on Monday. This article is pure nonsense. It’s already predicted by most of Wall Street that WP7 will have greater market share than iOS in 2015. In fact, Apple iOS will probably have about 15% market share tops. Everyone knows that “closed” ecosystems NEVER, EVER last. It’s all about “open” systems of all shapes, sizes and low cost that always win major market share.

Wall Street has said repeatedly that Apple itself can grow no further and the only way it’s going is down. That translates to short-selling it down until all individual Apple shareholders sell all their remaining shares. The hedge funds completely control Apple, Steve Jobs and iOS for their own use as a short-selling vehicle. Apple as a company is worthless and only exists for stock market manipulation.

    1. @WiseAssInvestor
That is by far the worst and most unimaginative troll piece I’ve seen. The way you quote “Wall Street” as if it were a reliable and cogent entity from which to take sage advice instead of what it really is: an insane, babbling, disconnected mob of self-serving idiots.

Apple is worthless? Apple as a company has enough cash to buy several corporations that are considered large and rich with enough money left over for pizza and a beer.

      “Everyone knows” always precedes bullshit.

      Likewise, “completely.”

      If you’re serious, you’re a moron.

If you’re joking, you’re not funny.

If you’re attempting to influence anyone’s trading you should be jailed.

    2. Why don’t you pull a condom over your head and suffocate yourself. That should relieve us of the drivel you’re spewing. IBM just celebrated 100 years of existence. So tell me numbnuts is AIX an open system? For that matter if open systems are destined to take over the world why do you still have to pay a licensing fee to Microsoft to use Windows?

There’s absolutely no truth in what you say. If you like losing money shorting Apple that’s your prerogative but by the same token there are people, though small in number, who like to jump off bridges. You should follow them down.

    3. After 2015 come back to me with your rosy prediction. Microsoft is trying hard to imitate Apple’s success. It is telling its partners that they have to adhere to Microsoft’ standards. They won’t have the freedom to choose what chips, camera, screen size or other peripherals unless Microsoft says so. The era of DOS/preWindow 8 where any manufacturer can deviate on the hardware side is gone. Microsoft wants to control the specifications of the hardware as well as the software aspects. Microsoft is getting Apple-envy in its attempt to a second coming.

  8. The secret to Microsoft’s success was that they released their (copied from Mac) OS into the wild, allowing cheap box manufacturers of every stripe to flood the market with affordable computing machines. That’s also the secret of Android’s success, although the devices are not as cheap as those grey Windows boxes.

But Microsoft had nothing beyond their OS. Apple, on the other hand, has created a user-friendly, largely affordable and elegant ecosystem that is rich in utility and potential.

To say that Apple is creating new standards of IT success is no longer anything new or exciting. What is exciting is just trying to fathom where the upper limit will be. Based on sheer revenue performance alone, we could be watching an entity that will eventually dwarf the economies of whole countries – if it isn’t already doing so.

And, oh yes – their original OS is also tagging along nicely as the Mac continues to grow due to the ever-widening halo effect.

  9. Something I saw today…
A national lawncare company had people walking the neighborhood selling the service door to door, I didn’t think much of it. That’s normal.

Till I saw the guy typing on his notepad… That’s when I realized he had an iPad. they equipped them with iPads to sell the lawncare service. Yes I made sure it was an iPad not a cheap ass android. I don’t know what case they were using but it looked to be a tri fold setup with a writing pad also.

Talk about the times are a changing.

    1. My daughter just returned from visiting relatives in Asia. Her cousin was showing her 70+ grandfather (from the UK) all the things you could do with an iPad. This is how the good news spreads. Not by massive advertising but by word of mouth. It’s infectious.
A colleague at work just got an iPhone. My boss too. These are people I wouldn’t have expected to get one. More and more people are moving to iPhones and iPads as it becomes more popular and well established.

  10. One thing to keep in mind, no matter what is the current score in the OS warz:

Apple are the innovators. All others are followers or wannabes.

I wish it were not so. But apparently the general business environment these days denigrates creative people and rewards marketing people who have not-a-clue about making anything productive or new. We can hope this self-destructive biznizz climate commits its final act of self-destruction in order to make way for a new creative technology environment.

Until then, we benefit from having Apple buck the trends, kicking the butts of the lazy, lost and lousy.

  11. I agree. No company is invincible, given the passage of sufficient years. That applies to Apple too – particularly companies that have a track record of not listening to customers.

    1. It depends on the business model and the core beliefs which underpin it. Just as IBM has survived for a century or so by following its core belief, so will Apple. It’s in the DNA. The whole widget, giving a great consumer experience !

    2. Apple has a track record of not listening to their customers and look at what they’ve done.

No faster horses for Apple customers. Apple makes the kind of stuff that Apple engineers and Apple designers want to own.

Who wanted a hand held computer that also made phone calls?
