Q: I love my iPad and iPhone4 and am a huge fan of yours and all that Apple does. I desperately want to stay inside of Apple’e ecosystem as much as possible. However, MobileMe is making it very difficult for me to do so. Unreliable/unpredictable syncing, creating duplicate entries (sometimes scores of them), etc. It’s almost unusable. And I know from forums (including Apple’s own support boards) that I am not the only one experiencing these very real and frustrating problems. Please tell me it will get better, and soon?

Better or free?
Had the same problem and I let the subscription lapse. I too wanted that to work. Hope it will be cheaper and resolve the problems that made it a pain.
I must be lucky or something but can’t say I have had any problems with MobileMe except when i initially got my iPhone and had a problem with double entries. A resync fixed that problem as I recall.

We sync our contacts thru MobileMe to two iphones and two macs. We keep getting multiple entries for contacts and my wife keeps blaming me. C’mon Steve. Help a brother out.

You are absolutely correct. I am embarrassed to have business emails coming from my iPad because I cannot change the me.com address. Please give us the ability to choose the return address we wish.
I’ve been with mobile me for quite a long time, and I can say it is definitely getting better. I am very pleased they have continued to add value over the years, and the best part is every time I upgrade my mac and iphone.. and now ipad- it’s pretty seamless.
I have a super fast internet connection- which helps immensely with iDisk. IF you have a slow internet connection- idisk will be somewhat slow.
Oddly- my GF has dupe sin iCal (i don’t). I will refrain from sexist user jokes tho. I need to get laid today

it bloody well get better. now that the iphone location is free to non MobileMe subscribers, i’m essentially paying $100 per year for an email address and some dodgy syncing. they should drip the price to $29.95 and shore up the cloud stuff.

however, I do think the data storage aspect of MobileMe is slow with a capital S sometimes and the heavy javascript interface is not helpful especially if you are connecting using someone else’s slow PC – very tough to stomach
I gave up using MobilMe for syncing after I developed dozens of duplicates of EACH entry in my Address Book. It made the Address Book on my iPad and iPhone unusable. Even worse, there seems to be no obvious way to get rid of them and start over. For $99 per year it’s a complete rip-off. Apple’s absolute worst piece of software and an embarrassing failure in my eyes.
Maybe they’ll host external email and stop forcing everyone to use @me.com anyway
I have never had any duplicate entries from MobileMe.
I have had many clients duplicate their device entries by sync though both MobileMe and iTunes.
My problems with MobileMe:
1. me.com addresses (I still have a mac.com address)
2. Can get same functions from other sources for free.
3. Slow iDisk (even with fast internet connections).
4. Price point is still too high.

Yeah.. the whole move from mac.com to me.com was a bust. Just created more misery and problems than it fixed.
I use it, but find it a bit ‘rickety’ at time…
Also, the whole shebang is poorly marketed, not well explained, and generally not up to snuff for the rest of what Apple offers..

MobileMe is pure crap. Apple should be ashamed.
He’s promised that before. It sucks. It’s always sucked. I say that as a charter member who would leave except all my email comes to my MobileMe address and it does sync calendars, contacts, bookmarks, etc to my computers and iPhone.
Mine works fine.
You can use a different email address in iOS Mail. Just tap the from box and it should reveal the CC, BCC and from address fields. Tap the field that you wish to edit.
Double entries:
Uncheck sync in iTunes for calendars, contacts etc.

I totally agree with you. Fortunately, there is one saving grace; I have been a Mac.com user for 7 years and continue to use this rather than the me.com which I detest. I hope other earlier .Mac users are aware that they still have this option. For the rest, Apple better do something sooner than later. 2011 can’t come soon enough considering all of the other issues with Mobile Me and I too, unfortunately suffer similar problems.

The name definitely sucks, what the hell were they thinking? I still use mac.com, but would prefer god.com, out of sheer modesty.
I’ve been a customer since it was called iTools. I love it, but sync has been a serious issue for years.
I had 2,500+ in my email address book but because of the sync issue, it exploded to well over 6,000 due to duplicates. Some names never duplicated, others would have as many as 6 duplicates (one from ever machine or iOS device). Others would somehow get merged and peoples phone #s and company names, and addresses would get mixed up with other contacts–for apparently no reason.
Nothing like thinking your calling one business to end up getting a relative by mistake—thanks to messed up sync.

Ive had so many duplicate contacts…literally hundreds for the same person…this should never ever be allowed to happen. When would anyone ever want that functionality??
after a 3hour session at my local apple store, we pretty much shut down my MobileMe setup on my mac. continuous and maddening sync problems, iCal issues, address book duplicates. just mounting horror story of problems. now – with MobileMe disabled – my mac is back! pure and simple syncing – like before MobileMe disrupted everything! sorry to say : good riddance. and i was disappointed – and angry – with it’s performance.
I have been using mobileMe to sync for years on multiple devices. Fortunately, I have rarely run into syncing problems, even then it is usually something like a single appointment getting doubled.
For me, being able to edit notes on one device and continue editing them on another is a killer app for mobileMe.
By the way, I still use the mac.com domain for my emails. I hope they never turn that off!

Why, because you “either” sync with iTunes to your Mac iCal and Address Book or MobileMe syncs via WiFi/Edge/G3 and keeps iCal and Address Book synced.
I’m not a mobileme power user but I find that for about $8/month it does a great job giving me 20gb of storage for my iweb pages. I have at least 2 gigs of pages and it’s work without incident so far.
You have to dumb as a fuck nut to use MobileMe. It is so god damn broken that it is just pathetic.

I LOVE MobileMe and have never had a problem or issue with syncing between all of my iGadgets. Friends of mine that are not tech savvy have had problems setting it up, but once I show them which settings need to be on which devices they no longer have problems either. It’s a simple matter of being smarter than the technology you’re trying to use.
I haven’t used .Mac sync for years, after it wiped me out several times. So yesterday, I decided to enable MobileMe sync, and sure enough… corrupted my keychain and I couldn’t log into my machine. It resurrected some ancient bookmarks and prefs, basically trashed my setup AGAIN. Lovely, Apple. Keep up the good work, putting effort into the profit centers and ignoring core functionality and data security.

Sync works for me, but the rest is unusable.
Needs a ground-up overhaul.
To stop multiple intries of same contacts, turn of syncing in itunes. That is for syncing without a mobile me account. Put mobileme email account on evey item to sync. Turn mail off on other family

MobileMe corrupts my keychains as well. This is so frustrating to me. I’ve even reset all of my sync data with no success. Luckily, my contact/bookmark syncing has been excellent.
… for a minute … what does your email server name say about you, the user. “Apple”? You work for “Apple”. Excellent for business use, so-so for personal use. “Yahoo”? You are one cheap sod. DOA for business use, possibly acceptable for personal use. “Mac”? You are a proud owner of a Macintosh computer! Possibly usable for business, perfectly fine for personal use. “Me”? Unless you are in on the secret, no value. If you are in on the secret, you may know it is used by iPad owners, or by Mac owners, or both. Perfectly fine for both business and personal use … no associated negatives.
BTW: my iTools-MobileMe account has been mostly trouble free, and totally ad-free, from Day One. Well, there WAS that glitch during switch-over a while back … got free time out of it!
Considerations: No Ads! There are no ads, or other drivel, on your screen. No threat of MalWare, either. Neither can be said of many of the “free” services out there. And no association with the “cheap freaks” out there. And no ads traveling along with your e-mails. And no harvesting of your friend’s addresses. And you get “stationary” which can pretty up your e-mail … but can get messy with Replies and doesn’t work that well with non-HTML mail readers. But, who still uses one of those, anyway? Additionally, there are all those other “features” that are also available – for “free” – elsewhere. Besides the no ads, and the no malware, and the like considerations, there’s also “location”. It’s all associated with the same address. You don’t need to pop out of one to get into another.
So, to all you “Yahoos” out there … you might want to reconsider your choice of address when you decide to “grow up”.

All of the groundwork has been laid, a strong foundation on which to build a future, lessons learned, technological advances adopted that didn’t exist when Apple undertook this service.
So STFU already, especially those of you threatening “never again, Apple”, blah fucking blah… In another year you’ll be bragging how you were an early adopter saying Mobile Me was my idea!

Let’s keep in mind that part of the reason MobileMe has problems is because WebDAV is still not-quite-ready-for-prime-time. I’ve wanted to change my FTP Internet server over to WebDAV for years but have been consistently underwhelmed with WebDAV’s reliability. I can’t imagine Apple are exactly pleased with WebDAV either.

No. But it has problems. I too get the double entries via Sync, which is crazy. The ‘Internet 2’ apps on the site have had some quirks and complaints.
Nonetheless, I back up to my iDisk every night and am glad to have it. The Backup program is also quirky, but works fine. Having the Sync to all my Macs & iDevices is great. Having the Public space where I can share files and even a website is great.
I’ve never regretted belonging to Mac.com/MobileMe. I’ve been a member since day 1. However, I do go value shopping on the net for yearly update packages. It is possible to find much better deals than the standard $99 yearly price. (Shhh! Don’t tell anyone).

There is a way to do it- you have to “trick” your iPad- well- not really but you set up 2 accounts on your ipad- they both point to your me.com account. The difference is you set one up as a MobileME account and another as ‘other’ and select IMAP. You configure the MobileMe account NOT to collect mail- just sync contacts & calendars You configure the “other (IMAP) account to JUST collect the email from mail.me.com >> with this setup- you can specify any return address. For SMTP- you’ll have to specify an alternate SMTP account that you have access to- MobileMe won’t allow you to send mail if the return address isn’s a me.com address- not a big deal- just setup the SMTP account credentials and you’re good to go. Try it- I’ve been doing this since April.

MobileMe works fine for me, but it does require proper configuration on syncing devices. The different setups on devices versus machines generates a lot of confusion, as well as duplicates. It’s the setup that needs to be simplified.
