It was sold on eBay last week and went for $520. So, he took a loss, but it wasn’t a total waste. You can still see it if you look up item # 150440194811.
The artistic merit is certainly debatable, but it at least served a purpose other than just being microwaved. Can’t say as much for the blended iPad from a few weeks back.

I started watching that video a few days ago, but I stopped at where they unpack and register the poor iPad… I thought ‘no ,they’re really gonna do this’ and decided to not watch it. I never liked having to be part of a specator crowd. All things aside, I think there is something as a minimal soul even to machines or lifeless items, which sure got taken away from this poor iPad that may have ‘wanted’ to give joy to someone, just by functioning, thus receiving back joy by whatever spiritual or nonconceivable manner.
I am happy to not have watched this and I won’t. It’s barbaric on several levels, spiritual or not, astral or not, inanimate or not. it’s like killing a lamb before birth to get to it’s intestines and bake them.

To add to my earlier comment, for those who are inclined to distrust Bataille as a wild-eyed French postmodernist Librul, I highly recommend Eric Posner’s “Law and Social Norms.” Posner is a fairly conservative/libertarian Chicago-school analytic law and economics guy, yet he makes exactly the same point about the inherently wasteful nature of social status spending (a huge part of our economy at all class levels, not just the uber-rich).

The video is a low and easy form of artwork but the reason it provokes the reaction it does is because of the broader truths it speaks to. To get angry at the artist (or me) for highlighting those truths is to displace your anger from what really provokes it.
