Apple today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds– thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.

All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

It’s really nice and a great ebook but overall I have to say I’m not very impressed with it.
I don’t like the keyboard dock or the fact that it has to be plugged in to another computer to sync.

16-64GB of storage? 64 and 128 would be right

No mention of MobileMe with the storage options it would have been ok had there been a wireless wifi iTunes sync for MobileMe.
I’m scratching my head on this one. I have no reason to rush out and buy one of these without most of the missing features I listed.

Well, I have to see one in person before I render my final verdict, but as of now I am a little underwhelmed.. I mean don’t get me wrong, I am not an Apple hater – quite the opposite.. in fact in my house we have a 8-core Mac Pro, 2 23″ Apple Cinema Displays, a 17″Mac Book Pro, a 13″ Mac Book, an Apple TV, and Airport base and Express, and 2 iPhone 3G’s – so I obviously have a fervor for new Apple goodies… and yet, when looking at this thing and hearing about what it does.. while I agree it’s pretty cool, I just don’t see where it really fits in to my universe.

Did they actually say no multi-tasking? I’m hearing that in comments but I don’t recall that being said onstage… Apple always leaves a lot to be discovered when they present new products. I already think it’s excellent, but until I hear some hands-on reports, I’m not going to judge too much.
I think the only complaint I have is, at least from what I can see from the photos is no camera. I use Skype/webcam too much to not have that. V 2.0 perhaps.

Posted this a little while ago in the Live thread, thought I’d throw it in here…
I am always a little skeptical of overblown pre-release claims, but I think this will be a game changer for a few reasons:
1. The price point is really good for such a device. Hell the max cofiguration with 65Gb RAM, WiFi + 3G is under $900! This will appeal to a wide range of possible customers, from the cash-strapped older folks who just want to access mail and see grandkids photos, to the high-flying exec who wants to both show off his latest gadgetry and needs to edit Powerpoint (excuse me, Keynote) presentations in Business class, which brings me to…
2. The presence of iWork. This could be the beginning of the first major chink in the MS Office monopoly. How many of those execs, who otherwise think they need M$ for the enterprise, will get one of these, find they want to edit a Word or Powerpoint document, learn there’s no MS Office for iPad but there is this nifty iWork which is even better, and pretty soon will be talking to their corporate IT people about why they don’t have iWork on the office desktop? Also how many regular folks who get the low end pad and have never tried iWork will think “Hey, for $10 extra, might as well give it a shot” and then find going back to using M$ Office feels like having a tooth pulled?
Perhaps this gadget has a limited market: schools will want one per student to replace blackboards, textbooks etc. and in some cases computers, and people who travel (e.g. the military) and people who don’t travel but like to surf the web. It opens up a new and significant chunk of gross profit and expands the product to fill in the kindle gap for example.
Yes, it’s got limitations, but the pluses are huge. What will the next version have? Apple will add some goodies such as mentioned above, including higher capacity flash memory as it’s done with the iPhone.
$500 is a great price for this. But I am getting the 32 gig model. My 16 gig iPhone is only half full so 32 is plenty for me. And don’t need 3G as long as I have my iPhone. This will be great for my use.
Nope, I’m out. Can’t replace my laptop with it, can’t replace my iPhone with it. It’s an ereader with so-so battery life (and eInk is easier to read text from for long periods). I don’t need another subscription plan that dilutes the usefulness of the ones I already pay for (iPhone and internet access). No speaker, as far as I can see. Didn’t really expect a camera (it would have only been useful for video conferencing), or GPS, at least on this first round.
It was pretty much what I feared. There just wasn’t enough space between the laptop and the iPhone for this device. Newton 2.0. I’m off to get a Kindle and a Macbook Air.
I hope Apple sells all they can make, but I’ve got the iPhone and an MBP. For me I don’t see the need for the iPad since it seems to be little more than a big iTouch.
I really was hoping for a Mac OS X capable device with a little modified GUI but then I thought ok the iPhone OS is our OS X with different applications and different using experience than the Desktop OS, but only God knows how much I wanted the camera, video conferencing is one of the most important things when on road for me. Some sniffs, some tears, and hoping for a bluetooth external camera capability and I’m ok. And Logic pro, and Ableton live, Photoshop, Premiere, oh wait, Second life, KisMAC, Apple remote Desktop and all the others on my dock and…
Since I’m currently without a laptop, this makes perfect sense for me. Add that to the fact that I’m still using a Day 1 iPhone and the pluses multiply – my phone plan is 20 bucks cheaper than a 3G plan, so really, instead of upgrading my iPhone, I’d just go for the unlimited 3G plan for 30 bucks a month. That way I get 3G browsing on a full size screen for just 10 bucks more than I’d be paying for a new iPhone.
And when you think about the competition from Kindle and Nook, it’s almost laughable. The high-end Kindle is only 10 dollars cheaper than the entry level iPad, and (aside from lacking 3G) the iPad does a bazillion more things than the Kindle does.

BUT it IS unlocked 3G — does that mean T-Mobile? Sprint? Who else does 3G today (besides ATT)?
What I want to know is if they are going to make a larger one in a couple of years and call it the MaxiPad? I think the name sucks big red ones. And no video camera? That’s not smart either. I could see plopping one of these babies down in a video meeting and going to town but with no camera, that nips that in the bud. No sale here either.

Engadget confirms no multi-tasking. It’s the same walled off, press Home for everything approach as the iPhone and iPod touch.
“There’s no multitasking at all. It’s a real disappointment. All this power and very little you can do with it at once. No multitasking means no streaming Pandora when you’re working in Pages… you can figure it out. It’s a real setback for this device.”

Apple has failed to address a number of issues as to why anyone needs this product.
I think that not allowing for handwriting recognition/notetaking with some kind of stylus was a mistake — I can’t use this to take notes in a meeting efficiently.
This device seems to fill the same market segment as the macbook air, but even more underwhelming. And there are a lot of questions remaining for business users — will it run MS Office, will it run Exchange support. No multitasking is a bummer.
I hope Apple doesn’t ailienate its’ friends and partners with this product — they are taking on Amazon, MicroSoft, Google, and Intel all at the same time.
The thing it has going for it is the affordability factor, and the amazingly low price for unlimited data on the 3G system.
I feel like its’ a nice device for folks who ride the train into work, and kind of pointless for the rest of us.

I’m most concerned with iTunes streaming over wifi for home use that’s pretty much what it will take for me.

And I think they really missed a tremendous marketing opportunity, as well. They should have given this thing more iPhone and touch compatibility (think external monitor and keyboard for iPhone, as well as the ability to make use of the iPhone’s video and camera). It should have been cable- and bluetooth-connectible to the iPhone. I think it would have had more success marketed as an iPhone accessory (with all these other functions, of course) than as a standalone device.
And if it was tetherable to the iPhone for data access? No brainer – everyone who could afford it would have bought one as well as the unlimited data plan for their iPhone.

Well, it does have bluetooth – how do we know that the bt keyboard isn’t supported? I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere. Why are people assuming that it doesn’t support it?

iMac killer?
Seems to me the casual computer user now has all their needs met with this device. People who use a computer for business might have many of their needs met as well. Seems like desktops might be relegated to people who need a ton of processing power and large screens, musicians, graphic artists, filmmakers… although I bet many of those needs will be met with this device as well.
This is also going to end the “sitting at the computer” thing for a lot of people, which I think is great. One of the things the iPhone did for me was to encourage me to go out more, why surf the web at home when I can do it at a cafe, or at the park? Makes life more pleasant. This device will just increase that mobility, and I can imagine it will have social ramifications too… small groups of people who don’t know each other huddled around an iPad for no reason other than it’s fun to do so.
Bad things: No USB. No iSight. No memory cards. No tethering to my iPhone. No Flash Player support. Doesn’t replace my iPhone or MacBook Pro, so I have three devices.
Good things: No Verizon (oh that cracks me up). Relatively low priced data service with no contracts. Nice looking. It replaces my Kindle (and I can read my books with my Kindle app). Nice price. Damn cool.
I’m undecided on buying it. But knowing that all you anti-ATT people talking up the rumors about Verizon is amusing.

Apple is now solely a mass consumer company..let’s say worse…merely a content delivery, multimedia conglomerate “gateway”…Sure there is billions to be made..BUT what happened to computing? I’ve seen these kinds of comments before. It was when the iPhone launced. No-one could see what the device would do for the future of phones. This is basically the same. Wait and see what incredible software people will be building for this device. And i’m pretty sure multitasking will be here soon. Apple likes to tell us what to do with this device(just like the iPhone) and the iPad(lol) will be a KICK ASS device within the next year. This is only the beginning…

Everyone that is stating “no sale”, will be getting one sooner than they think. This thing is only going to get bigger. Now Apple has to viable movie and TV viewing devices, not counting the little ones. This thing will sell like pancakes, just like the iPod and the iPhone. It will eventually get the iSight camera. I can see real estate agents using the iPad. We’ve had 3 come to our place over the past few months; all lugging a 15 to 17-in laptop to show us what’s available on the market. An iPad w/ 3G connectivity would be perfect..and light!.
After reading the specs I am going for the 3G model even if I never activate 3G. Got to be worth if for the GPS and compass. What a great screen in my golf cart with Golfshot program or in the RV with G-Map (that one does not need internet connect with its built in maps) Someone is bound to have mounting devices for them. I wonder how many apps it can hold, more than the iPhone I would guess. I have more than 200 and it would be nice to have them all available.
A great start, but needs much more for v2, including a camera, multitasking, and ability to input with an iStylus (or whatever). Should also have a deal with AT&T;to add to an existing iPhone account, say around an extra $20 a month, or at least allow tethering. I’m confident that Apple is already thinking ahead…this is just the initial release.
I love this thing. It’s like all the stuff we see on Scifi come to real life with this device. I can leave my laptop in the office, my desktop at home, and take this with me everywhere else. With so many web enabled apps to control your laptop/desktop remotely, the iPad is perfect to take with you everywhere, everyday!

Well, it’s at least less costly than I feared, but missing a number of features many of us anticipated – multi-tasking, front cam for iChat video conferencing, etc. Running Mac apps was always a long shot. One thing that surprised me is the resolution. At only 1024×768, it’s not giving one true HD – not even 720p. So, watching those downloaded iTunes HD movies will involve a lot of interpolation.
As it is, I’m happy with my iMac and iPod touch. So I guess I’ll be waiting for Rev 2.
Nice device, but I gotta say, no webcam no sale for me. I can haul my MBP around for iChat, but it would be nice to carry around a smaller and lighter device for that purpose.
Maybe version 2. But iPad is not compelling enough for me to fork over the money just yet. Apple, you gotta bring the webcam.
No Camera, No Multitasking WHAT SO EVER, No notifications, NO Wireless Keyboard support. Stupid Home screen, No disk support, no stylus/handwriting support!!!! (not everyone wants to draw with their finger you know!)
This device is good for entertainment purposes only. You can buy a laptop top that can do the same stuff and let you answer an IM while working on a spreadsheet or check your mail.
Apple you blew it.
Children, slow down. Some things to keep in mind:
1. I’d love a Webcam too. But in order to get AT&T;to agree to a good data plan price, something had to give. AT&T;is probably freaked about bandwidth on their network, and worried about users switching to Skype. And too, a Webcam could be a battery drain at this point. Look for it in version 2.
2. Multitasking: I’d love this too. Expect to see limited multitasking in an OS update in the future. Apple leaves things out in the initial release to give consumers a reason to buy a new version later, or to have an ace of spades in their pocket for when it’s needed.
3. Remember, this is a version 1.0 product. I’m pretty impressed. Move beyond the here-and-now and imagine what this will be like in five years.
4. In 60 days, a lot will change. App developers will do more than enhance their apps for this. You will see a race by app developers to come up either with updates or new apps that take full advantage of the iPhone. Look for nicer note apps that use the real estate of the screen and more functionality that obviously is available in the SDK. You’ll see accessory makers creating cases, cables, docks, mikes, earphones and much more. So some of the things you’re whining about that may be a problem to you will be an opportunity for swift thinking entrepreneurs.
I think we’re off to a good start. Go to Gizmodo’s and Engadget’s articles about their hands-on first impressions. The LOVE how it feels in their hands.And a photo I saw of the iPad next to a Kindle makes it look small and lame by comparison to the new Apple product.
Is the iPad perfect? What version 1.0 product ever is? But I see the start of something big. This is the first practical tablet on the market. Look ahead 6-12 months, and you will see an array of products, apps, books and more. You will see it in use in schools, business and more. Books will no longer be static. Instead of carrying an armload of books to class, kids to adults enrolled in schools and universities will have an amazing new tool that will make learning more dynamic. Future libraries won’t be buildings, but virtual, all based on servers and wireless connectivity. I think the future will be very interesting. Just wait and watch.
Darn. No camera. That’s a pretty big bummer right there. I guess wait for version 2 to come out??

Not in California, I don’t know where you live but everything out here is on the web and with the correct password you can access all of that.
People that already have a MBP or iPhone maybe weren’t all that impressed, but I think this thing is meant to not only keep existing fans but to reach out to even more new customers. If you’ve never had a Mac before now you can try one without paying the MacBook price. Also if you have young children or elders who just want an easy appliance, browse the web, and stay connected, why do you need to buy them a laptop or even netbook? Just give them one of these. The size will offer a lot of superiority over current iPhone apps. Your MBP is good enough in cafes, but commercially the iPad can replace a ton of current handhelds and make better field equipment.
I don’t know if people have caught on the serious implications of the new iWorks apps too. This is a new twist to SaaS model. When you want a specific piece of app, just download it and use it. No buying big s/w packages with stuff you don’t need. No risk of losing work if you lose connection. No install media to keep.
The OS too now is LOCKED down. No Psysters will be able to buy iPad OS DVDs and resell it on cheap hardware. No way to probably even run it on non-A4 chip architecture.
Apple have just shown the future of personal computing again.

1. There is the same multitasking support as in the iPhone.
2. There are the same notification abilities as in the iPhone.

I was completely underwhelmed by an extra large ipod touch/iPhone but…
with the accessories this is a potential low priced alternative to a iMac… with the added bonus of being mobile when you would like.

This device is evolutionary, not revolutionary. It takes an interface that is proven to work, and gives it more screen real estate to work with. Am I going to get one? Not right away. But if the price goes down in a year or two, especially for the 3G model, I just might. I depend on my iPod touch. I take it everywhere. I could really see using this thing, a lot.

This product is targeted at business as well as consumers.
Note the lack of a camera – many businesses don’t want devices that can be used as a repository for stealing data, and without a camera, this will allow the iPad to be taken into those classified areas where cameras are not allowed.
Reporters can take them into courtrooms where, again, cameras are not allowed.

And like some others have noted, the presence of iWork will really make this a great creative device.

I seriously doubt that we’ve yet seen all the functionality that will ship at the end of March.
The iPad is a nice device, given that it’s really trying to balance between a MacBook and iPhone/iPod touch AND it’s Version 1. It’s really more about the new OS than the hardware. It opens the door for a new class of devices. iWork is a great addition!
I wonder if it’ll work with Bluetooth headsets? The iPhone does, iPod touch doesn’t.
I have an adaptor made that connects my Etymotic h2f to my MacBook Pro’s separate headphone & mic jacks, so it should work with this for Skype and fring.
It’s all the computer most people will ever need, but it’s no Kindle killer. That 10 Hour (LOL) battery life will be really helpful on a back country hiking trip. My Kindle will go 14 Days with the wireless turned off. It’s also easier on my eyes.

Hate to be the one to break it to ya, but there is no GPS chip in the iPad.
I laughed at a lot of the comments on here because they are carbon copys of what I read when the first iPod came out. People are too focused on the immediate bells and whistles that they do not recognize that there is a new paradigm in town.

I too am disappointed in the lack of a webcam but thats it. Overall it is a brilliant idea and its going to be big….just like the iPod.
I am sooooo getting one.
This is going to replace my wife’s laptop in a couple of months. She would like to be able to do email, web browsing, and some word processing, but says even her currently 13″ laptop is too heavy to carry with her all the time. This will be a very nice replacement for her. Also, we just bought here an iMac, so our computer budget is pretty small right now. Another good fit. Still, if money were not an issue, I suspect the 13″ MacBookPro would be the better option (though at 1.5 lbs, she might choose the iPad anyway).
For me, it is also not compelling enough to justify the cost for me. I have my iPhone with me all the time and my MacBookPro 90% of the time, so it does not fill a need.
I do agree that there are some missing features. Multitasking is up there to really be able to replace a laptop for me when on the go. The cameras. A WWSJD button, etc. As with the iPhone, these things will come in time. I suspect that in a year it will have most of the things I want. Also eager to see how the iPad specific apps develop over time.
It’s a cool device, but, at least right now, it’s basically just a super-size iPod Touch with some additional apps available.
Multi-user capabilities would be good- no word that I’ve heard on this, but I doubt this version has it (or if it does, that feature simply wasn’t ready yet). This could be useful as a casual email checker / web browser for the home, but it would need to support multiple users to do that effectively.
How do you get iWork docs onto it? Only via MobileMe or email attachments? Can I simply just copy them over USB? Can it be used as a disk, as an iPod can? How about PDF’s? Can I copy those over to it?
The Calendar and Address Book apps look cool- I hope Apple offers the same interface in the Mac versions soon.
How about To-Do’s? Do those sync from iCal?
A camera would’ve been nice, but that’s not a deal-killer for me.
I hope it can stream media from a shared library on your home network- didn’t see anything about that in the presentation.

Kind of disappointed that it doesn’t appear to support a stylus. I don’t want a stylus for ordinary usage, but something like what Wacom does for sketching, with the preciseness that a stylus allows, would have been nice.

It’s nice. It’s very nice. And there’s no doubt that it’s revolutionary. But I just feel that Apple have been a bit lazy. In it’s current state, it’s very good, but it could have so much more.
Give it a few years; they’ll more than likely update it yearly, like the iPhone, and then I reckon we’ll see things like cameras, bluetooth etc show up.
I suppose in the end, the hype isn’t a good thing. It makes you’re expectations so high that whatever the hell they announce, it’s always going to be slightly underwhelming,

For those wanting syncing with MobileMe, just use Apple’s iDisk app on the iPad. Very useful.
Is it telling that so many people are already looking forward to a rev 2 of this device? Even most of the people here who are trying to like it are spending most of their time talking about what it will be like a few years from now. But if no one buys it now, it’ll become the next AppleTV. And before you misunderstand me, the AppleTV is great for what it does, but it doesn’t really do enough, hence it’s ‘hobby’ status and fairly limited acceptance.
So that’s my take so far. Just like the AppleTV. A neat device, a neat idea, and not enough for me to get one, even though I really wanted it (before I saw it).

Considering what I use my iPhone for at home, I’d consider one for the bigger screen, but it’s not a must buy. Especially considering I just replaced my 3G I destroyed for $300.
It has potential… especially if you install a VNC client and can have full access to your Mac from another room.
But have to say… sort of underwhelmed. I expected something more than just a big iPhone. That says, it seems like a solid product. The question is, is there REALLY a market for this?
There is no reason I would put any effort in to grab my iPad to check e-mail really quick when I could my iPhone out of my pocket can check it.

This is the perfect computer for many, many people: kids, non-techie execs, medical offices, grandmas, etc. And BTW, the 10 hour battery life was mentioned for watching movies. I would imagine that reading books allows it to last a lot longer.
The Kindle is a one-trick pony that’s about to be sent to the glue-factory. Yes, Amazon might continue to sell 100,000 per year, but all the publishers will flock to the iPad.

With all due respect, the iPad can easily be held in place for a videochat by using the dock accessory or iPad case. Is that really so hard to figure out?

A bigger iPod touch is what I am seeing.
Same bigger size keyboard on bigger screen doesn’t seem intuitive, it means I have to purposely sit down with my legs up a bit in order to type with both hands or place on a table.
No multi tasking, no cam for video conferencing.
I won’t buy one for sure, but I m looking forwrd for next gen iPhone tho

Apple’s web site states:
“Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system”
Although I’m pretty sure it is via some adapter of some kind from the 30-pin dock connector since there is no regular USB connector on it. But USB is there. And elsewhere on their website they state you can connect to a camera or camera card, so that does imply that there is SOME sort of file transfer built in. I suspect you’ll be able to do what you were asking for.
Should have named it iFlop because that’s what it’s going to do. This thing is a big ostentatious toy. To survive, it must compete with fully functional multitasking PCs (AKA: netbooks) which it clearly is not capable of doing.
BT keyboard is supported. Check Apple site. Very clever. Now just need a camera!

Not sure about your Win-only point. I access the MLS site w/o problem using Safari. Perhaps you have access to other sections which require Win but those that were accessed by the 3 agents I’ve accessed w/o problem on my Mac Pro. I’ll grant you however that the MLS site is one ugly, unintuitive, created-Friday-afternoon layout.

I’m not speaking from first hand knowledge.. My sister is a realtor and constantly complains that the MLS systems are Windows only and has had to install Windows on her MB just to access the sites she needs. Perhaps you are correct for your area??

All the naysayers will be eating crow in 6 months. Just wait and see what gets developed for this device. If you think we have cool iPhone App, you haven seen anything yet.
1- It will get an iSight camera, possibly behind the screen.
2- It will be solar powered, eventually.
Wow – I can’t believe people expected this to be a replacement for a full laptop. That’s not the purpose.
This product is the new consumer platform – gaming machine, home media viewer, basic document product (iWork), etc. It’s not supposed to replace a laptop. It’s the starting point in getting people into multi-touch interfaces for those who don’t have an iPhone.
This is a cool “toy” product which people will start using and quickly realize how much they use it. That’s why it comes without a contract and even without 3G – Apple wants everyone to be able to buy it and experience multi-touch. That’s in preparation for the next Apple revolution in operating systems and user interfaces.
The real killer for this product is the App Store. Think about what developers can do for this product now that Apple has a great SDK, multi-touch, and a larger screen to work with. Just like iPhone apps were pretty basic to start and now can be pretty complex (or at least handle complex tasks), the iPad will get apps which do things we can’t even think of today.
Apple’s job is not to create a product which has everything built in. Apple’s job now is to build the hardware, interface and user experience, and turn it over to their developers for the really cool, functional apps. THAT’S where the iPad will really show off.
You’ll be able to have an app which controls everything in your house: a stylish, universal remote for your entertainment system that also interfaces with iTunes, taps into the baby monitor camera in the other room, shows your security system, accesses the sprinkler system and pool filter controls, outdoor lighting, etc. And that will be a basic app. Heck, a decked out universal remote costs $150-$500 on its own.

Though I’m a little taken aback at some of the harsh criticism here, I do think skepticism is generally useful as long as it does not prevent progress. Personally, I think this is going to be a product that begins to grow on the public. It likely won’t explode like the iPhone, but I think it is the future. I hear people saying they are underwhelmed (it is V 1.0 after all), but where do you see anything else like this. The interface is outstanding and it really does replace the crappy netbook arket with a user-friendly machine with a far more attractive form. That’s my perspective anyway. I think Apple knows it’s asking people to rethink things a little and probably expect more of a lag in initial sales compared to the iPhone/iPod. As far as it being a giant iPod – yeah it is. But that’s the direction people are moving. Portable, simple, direct UI, multi-touch, multi-media, etc. I fix Macs on the side and I would say 90% of them are totally underutilized with less than half the hard drive space used. I think when full-blown geeks analyze this stuff they forget that most people aren’t cramming their laptops with development tools and such. It’s not necessarily for everybody but it is for the everyman. Although, as a geek, I am definitely interested in it for the student/pedestrian side of me.
All-in-all, I do see it as revolutionary, just more subtle and gradual. It IS one of a kind anyway you look at it – it has it’s own niche. But Apple usually gets these things right.
I am quite underwhelmed. No Flash; multitasking, no webcam (webconferencing would be huge, and I use it); iphone instead of MacOS based. I’m surprised they didn’t try to marry the two OS interfaces a bit more. It’s essentially a big iPhone, but you can’t get rid of your iPhone for want of phone service.
With all of Flash’s issues, you can’t call something the ultimate web-browsing experience (to paraphrase Mr. Jobs) without being able to plug into huge portions of Internet content. I thought the reason why Flash never came to the iPhone was lack of processing power. That hurdle should now be overcome, but still no Flash. Poor show, Apple.

I think Apple has another game-changer here. People who are complaining about it being just a big iPod Touch or saying that it won’t replace their laptops are missing the point. What is important is that Apple is rethinking how we use a personal computer. True, this won’t be suitable for everyone. Business folk who need a laptop likely won’t use it, nor will students who need to write a lot. But for most people, what do we actually use a laptop for these days? Checking email, surfing the web, watching movies – this thing is perfect for that. I use an iMac at home and another one at work. I don’t have a laptop since my G3 Powerbook died last year. I keep thinking about getting one but at $1,000 or so I can’t really justify it. But $500 for an iPad? Perfect. If I’m on the couch and want to check email or the baseball scores I simply look them up on this puppy. When I travel to see the in-laws for the weekend and want to check email, I don’t have to jump on their computer (and if the kids get real loud I can nip downstairs and watch a movie or read a book).
At 1.5 lbs it’s a lot more portable than a 5 Ib laptop and, lets be honest, extended use of a laptop on your lap gets pretty warm and uncomfortable (especially in summer). You’re essentially stuck in one position on the couch, with this thing you can curl up, lie down, walk around – hell use it on the john comfortably. Magazines – I have about three subscriptions, I could see getting all those on this thing and getting rid of a ton of paper. I’d even consider reading a daily paper again. Taking a flight? Great, check email at the airport and what 10 hours of movies that I actually want to watch on the plane.
Of course later versions will add new features but that’s how technology works and at $500 for the entry level I’d seriously consider getting one now and then simply upgrading in a couple of years.
Oh, and don’t forget about those people who have a cell phone with another carrier and don’t have the option of using an iPhone. With this you can simply sign up with AT&T;without any contract and keep your current cell phone plan. I think when people start playing with these in the Apple stores they’ll start to see how it fills a very different niche to either an iPod Touch or a laptop.

I am thinking about around the house-to monitor kids, EyeTV, complete entertainment center control, voice activated recipes, chess game with a distant friend, light video editing and of course control of MobileMe.
The picture deal is annoying. Maybe if your camera has Wi-Fi or the SD card does, it will load directly. I have gotten tired of the iPhone’s need to have iPhoto running to upload, rather than through iTunes as an option. Maybe at least use iPhoto sharing.

I read the doom and gloom comments here so I went back to look as some of the comments when the original iPhone came out. There I saw the same predictions of failure and overpriced and underpowered etc etc. Without touching either the iPhone or this iPad so many experts are indicating that Apple just does not know what it is doing. Reminds me of my kids when introduced to a new food. Wait folks, when you try it you just might like it.
Well, what I am wondering is why they didn’t make it to where you plug in a standard USB keyboard to the basic dock.
I know there is a 30 pin to USB connector. Can I connect to a printer? Can I connect to a hard drive? How do I do backup or am I expected to have a computer as a primary device?
Bottom line is I can’t replace my 4 year old IBook for two more months until I see an IPad and decide between that and a MacBook.

As a 1st gen iPod Touch owner, the 32GB wifi version looks like the sweet spot for me, especially if the Skype app will work on the iPad.

So many comments and complaints by people thinking only of themselves as though the universe revolves around them. What struck me when I saw it is that this is a Star Trek device; it’s the data pad. No coincidence that they were showing Star Trek on it.
When I think of all the UPS, FedEx, delivery of any type, warehouse, forms and paperwork entry tasks that go on daily… the iPad is the first generation of the Star Trek data pad. It’s also no coincidence that they debut it with a new version of iWorks; that gives you the clue the direction they’re thinking in.
Cameras can be external and wireless (and make better sense in a device this big that you’re typing on). I can imagine a bluetooth scanner for reading barcodes; very handy for not only commercial use but consumers shopping and checking products out on the web before buying; while standing in front of it at the store.
This device is going to change the way a lot of things are done; just the way the iPhone has. They’ve been working on it for years; they’ve only just begun to show us what they have in mind.

I saw that it does work with Apple’s wireless keyboard. Also a separate camera might be better afterall. I’ll wait ’til I see a camera kit that would work nicely, then I might buy it. I do love to read, and would love to have all my notes always available. A note-taking app in addition to the Dragon Dictation app would just about do it for me.

I don’t think “Anthony” has realised that Microsoft stuff going to be about as relevant as carbon paper was to the coming of Xerox/Rank photocopiers in the 1960s. It DOES have bluetooth keyboard (see apple.com) and a speaker. Also there are already apple adapters for usb and sd for the dock connection, so that will be opened up. Look at the specs before you diss it. Since it will replace my kindle and touch, perfect for me.

Looks like a wonderful product. I’ll probably get one fairly soon, but I am really disappointed that they didn’t include iSight/iChat for video conferencing. This device should be ideally suited for this capability. 🙁

I was disappointed when the first iPod was announced. Everyone thought that it would be a PDA and replace the Newton. Instead it was a music player.
Then I to the Apple store, to pick up keyboard on the day the iPod rolled out. $500.00! I didn’t know why, but I went home with one.
I’ve never regretted that decision. It changed the way I carried files, listened to music and was only the size of a deck of cards.
Apple expanded it to what I originally wanted, plus more in the iPhone.
Give this a chance, it’s going to change everything. The old desktop/software/CD-DVD paradigm is outdated and Apple is leading the charge.
Printing will come, the camera will also, so will everything being asked for and more. This is just the first model, much like the first iPod was.

Why is everyone complaining so much? For starters, a Kindle DX is $489! And it’s just an eReader. Compare that to the iPad at $499 where you get a gorgeous eReader, the full Internet, email, itunes, video, iBooks, etc…
The iPad is amazing and I think people just don’t understand how it will fit into their lives. When they do it will be just like having our first iPhone all over again – a “what did I do before this” moment.
Looks great and I’m sure it will be a joy to use, but count me among the disappointed. I was hoping to replace my MacBook Air with one of these for when I travel overseas. I was hoping there would be a MicroSD card slot like all Macs have in order to import pictures on the go without the need to carry another attachement and then an iWeb application for updating my site on the go. This would have made the iPad (hate the name) perfect for me. It’s a great first step and Apple will sell a ton of them, but I have an iPod Touch and I will wait for the first revision.

Not sure about iWeb updating, but I’ve got a feeling that since iLife 10 was not announced today, it will be soon with some custom made UI’s for the iPad.
Photo import seems easy enough with what looks to be a 1″ big adapter for the 30 pin connector port.. Just slip the adapter in your iPad case..

This is a wonderful device. Finally, something that is uniquely a tablet computer, and not a laptop with a compromised desktop OS and tacked on touch screen. It won’t replace a full computer, but it will replace a “netbook” for a lot of people, and that’s the target audience.
The lack of a camera can be compensated for if you also own an iPhone. All it takes for chatting then is to make a data connection (WiFi or Bluetooth, or, hell, wired) with the iPhone, then put the iPhone upside down with its camera pointed at you.
Note that this combination also reduces the need for the iPad to have GPS and 3G compatibility. Indeed, through the data connection with the iPhone, these features become accessible as well.
The ideal combination: entry level iPad + iPhone
So here is the typical Mac Fanboy techno-geek (my) reaction after weeks of speculation:
WTF? It’s just an oversized iPod Touch! This blows – I’m so dissappointed. I don’t need this. . . What? it’s only $499 well maybe it’ll be useful for some stuff since it’s not that expensive. . . What? The data plan starts at $14.99 with no contract? That’s much cheaper than the $59 I was expecting to pay ATT for tethering on my iPhone so now I won’t need that. That’s $45×12=$540 per year that I’d be saving in yearly fees. I’ll splurge for the 3G model. I was thinking of getting a Kindle and now I don’t have to. That’s another $259 is savings. Screw it, might as well go for the top of the line 64G with 3G.

I was expecting a Mac tablet, but got a giant iPod touch instead. I think there’s going to be significant overlap for people who already have an iPhone/iPod touch. A Mac tablet would have made a better companion the iPhone/iPod touch.
My prediction: Apple will sell just enough of these to keep the product around, parallel to the situation with the MacBook Air. Much ballyhooed and supposedly “revolutionary” on inception, but not much of a game changer in the end.

I’m still thinking on this one. iChat video would have been cool. The thing I’m most surprised by is the need to sync with another computer. I assumed (not sure why) this would be completely independent… ya, you can download music, etc… but you really need to sync.
But Apple obviously had to leverage the apps phenominom… gives them instant 140k apps.
Need to think of it more as a netbook replacement alternative than laptop/desktop alternative. It does make
netbooks look horrible.

Not as impressed as I wanted to be. Great looking product, great design, no point carrying it around as my iPhone does all this, minus the big screen and iWork and I carry it in my pocket 24/7…
A few years perhaps this will evolve into the product we all want it to be, but it needs the following:
Camera for video conferencing
Accept tethering
Multi-task
Printing from iWork
Some kind of “Finder” which lets you easily store and locate files instead of the iPhone OS default.
Make it more computer, less iPhone.
I remember iPhone naysayers… but not among the Macheads (again, as I remember). I was blown away by the iPhone– it clearly reinvented the mobile phone / PDA category. That’s the way I felt after reading about and watching the keynote the first night.
This is very cool. But maybe cuz it leverages the iPhone so much, it’s not blowing me away.
Don’t get me wrong… I’d like to have one. But it’s not accurate to say we all dismissed the iPhone… and are doing the same here. It may take longer to come around.
The iPad needs video chat, multi-user profiles w/ parent controls, and (yes) flash. I know the last one stinks but a lot of sites for better or worse require it today.

Disappointed, expected much more. Just a gigantic iPod is not even a miniscule magic. This is not revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination.
Just a huge iPod. I do not know anyone who’s life will improve by owning it. This looks as no sale to me and very likely will be a flop. Only time will show but I am no even remotely excited … maybe my expectations were too high.
Too bad Steve focused on this product instead of on iPhone. If Apple cannot do multitasking, tethering, useful BT on this huge iPod… forget about doing it in iPhone. This is the most disappointing aspect, it shows that iPhone will be losing stream. I still have very high expectations for iPhone and I am due for upgrade in June. I love my iPhone, they should have put all energy behind improving it. I hoped 3GS is only the beginning. There haven’t been OS upgrade for a long time now. Looks to me that iPad and iPhone development will be tight together, which means that there will be new constrains on iPhone improvements and timeline. Bummer!

I watched the presentation and everything was a repeat from the iPhone presentation a couple of years ago. Yes, the iPad is bigger and faster. But $500 to watch videos, read ebooks, and to not get my hands dirty, I don’t know.
Yes, they will sell a zillion of these.
But my question is this: do I need one? I don’t see a compelling need as yet. I’ll stick with my iPod and my iMac and enjoy my Apple experience as others go forth and forge new pathways into their new Apple experiences.

School book publishers have been ripping off students for years, they deserve to go extinct. I like the idea I read about here yesterday. That follows the way Dickens was published. One short chapter in the newspaper each week. Then at the end, buy the book. On the iPad, buy one chapter of a book at a time for $1.99 etc..

Everyone’s complaining about no camera, no bluetooth, no this or that. Come on!
Technically, the iPad multi-tasks the same way the iPhone and iPod touch multi-task. You can play music while using only one other app.
Everything can be synced up form a Mac or PC via the same type of cable you use for your iPhone/Ipod Touch, now.
There are a lot of apps that you can use with this. I do not see productivity being a problem and it sure beats the cost of the higher end MacBooks and MacBook Air.
For those, like me, that use iWork on the Mac, iWork is awesome on this new iPad.
And I like how iPhoto looks and works on the iPad, too!
And it’s an e-reader! Now, I do not have to buy a separate way overly priced piece of technology to read digital books.
It’s built right into the iPad!
I am an artist As much as I like Photoshop and Painter, Brushes is a very good app on both the iPhone and iPod touch and now can use this app on an iPad. I have the ability to do digital art on the go without using an expensive laptop and without a drawing tablet or using one of those $1500+ LCD/LED dual touch screen/monitor setups. Apple just made large touch screen computing and digital content creation truly affordable! Wacom, the makers of expensive drawing tablets and touch screen tablets/monitors has got their work cut out for them. now!

Biggest iDisappointment ever.
The SDHC adaptor doesn’t cut it for me. Knowing Apple that will only let you import your photos and movies onto the iPad, but you won’t be able to view photos or movies from the card. You probably won’t be able to read and write files of any sort to the card either.
Face it, the reason Apple don’t offer expandable memory on their devices is because they know you’ll run out of space and have to go out and buy a newer, bigger device. Why let someone buy a cheap SDHC card when you can force them to buy a whole new device?
This is THE future of all media. A paperless media device that will initiate the creation of the paperless future of everything from books to papers to movies and even business. Papers, magazines, movies, TV shows, music… will be purchased through iStores at competitive prices providing feedback to the companies that are part of the system a source of income and metrics on their usership.

Ok, now lets wait for the iBallmer with windows 7 on it 😀 Its gonna be a utter failure. The original desktop OS never worked in Tablet and touch environment. Look all these failed lifebooks and others. Developing the new, iPad OS or Touch version of the OSX would take couple of years to come up with really good OS. Apple chose a very successful OS platform with multitouch capabilities for its iPad instead of putting desktop OS in it like hp & ms did with iSlate prototype. and I’m sure it will evolve in a great way.
Why do you need a webcam? That’s not what this is all about. It is geared for reading. Doesn’t your computer have a webcam? You can get into Mobile Me but do the calenders sync and address book? No mention of that. I think it’s sweet. That will save a lot of wear and tear on my MacPro….
NO FLASH!!! What’s Apple’s excuse now? There is a faster processor there and there is no multitasking, so why not flash. It bugs me so much to be browsing Safari and see those empty spots. No flash also means no access to MANY MANY MANY streaming videos! NO HDMI?, something so simple and standard, no SD card slot? No camera for web chat? I will wait for version 2.0 of this thing before I buy. And this comes from someone who owns 3 Macs, and iPhone and two iPods and worked for Apple for 6 years. It is a very limiting device. What do I like? I like iWork. It blew me away. I like the book store. I like that it runs iPhone Apps.

This device has no use for a webcam, because the cam would never be at the right angle, since you r holding the thing or it sits on your lap.
All he PC bozos are drunk on specs… thats how they justify using a OS from hell, because they can run it on a cheap PC with ons of specs… never mind they cant use the thing most of the time because they have to reinstall Windblows…
Funny all the geeks that complain about missing Flash are the first ones to install ad blockers, which are all Flash
Sorry, but iPad is just hype in my book. I have MacBook Pro and iPhone so what on earth would I need this for?? To read e-books while taking a dump?
