Prediction: either “Maps” will not be a pre-installed application in the next whole-num revision of iPhone OS, or it won’t use Google as a backend.
iCal it.
@Deus
Dude, that app is for Mac OS X, not the iPhone.
Duh!
The map opened on a city names Matellica … nice one.
Can’t you just use Google Maps via Safari?
Or does this application not require an internet connection?
How is this better than accessing maps through a browser?
Pretty weak. You can’t even save the lines or shapes that you make.
@Mike –
Dude – I know. I’m reading tealeaves here. I stick by my prediciton.
its nice. just played with it a bit. also, very very small physical size.
Not sure of the advantage over Google Map on Safari. (or browser of your choice)
But I use maps so much that I’ll use this for awhile and see what advantages if offers.
It’s also only version 1, it will be interesting to see what plans they have for it.
It’s pretty nice. Fast, small and simple.
For me there are a few things that beat using Google Maps in a browser.
It can fill the screen… no ads or white space.
It can hide all the tools.
I often take screen shots of maps for use elsewhere, so this is great.
It has topographical maps! All it needs are trails and I could kiss the crappy National Geographic maps goodbye.
@Mr. Reeee
maps.google.com has the topographical maps. “GoogleMaps” app doesn’t “have” topographical maps, it “shows” maps.google.com content in a WebView.
You just never noticed the Terrain button next to Map and Satellite on the maps.google.com website.
Commenters have been comparing it to Google maps in Safari but…
Besides being more compact, does it have any features that Google Earth doesn’t?
Is it new? If you use google chrome, map function is already in there just like iPhone.

How is that a Prediction after Apple bought a competing Maps tech company?? Its happening. Not News. They’re withdrawing from any ‘Googld Depedence because the relationship is starting to strain
@Jeeve…
Sure, i know that, but I don’t use Google maps for topo stuff very often because there are no trails. The new app is great because I can view and print full screen maps without all the browser crud that cuts down on the viewable/printable area…
I have an 11 x 17 laser printer, so the more map I can get on a sheet at a higher scale is better!
I’ve said it several times in this blog. I use Google Maps Trasit directions almost everyday. If Apple blocks Googles transit directions feature, I’m dropping my iPhone. That’s a deal breaker for me. I hope it doesn’t come to that though.
Google Maps in Safari has met all my needs who needs the app.
So again, how is the any different from web-based Google Maps?
@LTD. It seems faster to carry out commands than the web based equivalent and definitely looks nicer without the browser surround. As it’s only an 88Kb download give it a try. I’m happy with it.

Thank you.
