“Some lucky iPhone owners are reporting that multimedia messaging has started working on their iPhones,” Ian Paul reports for PC World.
“The earliest report about MMS activation came from Mediaite blogger Ash Kalb on Saturday who said select U.S. iPhone customers now have MMS support. Kalb reported MMS suddenly appeared on his phone just hours after he updated his mobile device with iPhone OS 3.1, which was released last Wednesday,” Paul reports.
“MMS, similar to regular text messaging, allows you to send messages, with pictures, video, or audio, to other wireless phones,” Paul reports. “iPhone users who say MMS is working for them are typically running iPhone OS 3.1 with carrier file 5.0.”
Paul reports, “Earlier this month, AT&T announced MMS on the iPhone would debut on September 25… It’s hard to know exactly where MMS is working, as some iPhone owners living within a few miles of each other are reporting different experiences.”

I guess those select iPhone customers don’t include me….
Maybe, AT&T;can’t handle a full roll out so they are phasing it.
All those people who got MMS early are socialist death panelers who deserve to be overrun by the Tea Bag Express!

Random beta?
So seeing as 3.1 breakes tethering, and I ain’t upgraded because of that, does that mean my choice is between MMS or tethering?
I stick with tethering.(I don’t even use it much, but it’s real handy in a pinch.)
i’ve got a bad feeling MMS is only going to make things worse for AT&T;. It’s already so easy to use these features and the network is going to be flooded with MMS now. Oy Vey!!! but it will be fun to have.
Has AT&T;even announced what they’re charging for MMS service?
Pictures or it didn’t happen.
Personally I’d rather the iPhone open up more widely to accepted video standards. MMS is fairly irrelevant to me bit I am sick to death of “safari can’t download that file.” heck I even get it from Apple.
I couldn’t care less about MMS
How does one know if one has MMS. What app do you check?
just my $0.02
@Ray. I would guess that applications such as the camera and audio capture would allow you to share via MMS as well as the normal methods.
@curious
No extra charge to receive and send humiliating pictures, videos, and drunken sound clips. just counts against your txting plan.
and there will probably maybe be a 3.1.1 update? or maybe a sleeper built into 3.1? or another one of those network updates via iTunes? to turn on MMS.
AT&T;is not early with MMS. They are about 2 years late.
I’m pretty sure that those who have MMS functionality already did the nonjailbreak of their phone to activate tethering…Otherwise, the screen that’s been appearing on the web showing network settings that detailed wouldn’t be visible…It’s likely just active for AT&T;to do any final testing 2 weeks before the official launch….
@early?
Not late, right on time. ATT said they would release it during summer. It’s still summer and it is released.
What happens to those idiotic law suits?
I am running on 3.0 firmware on iPhone 3G S. I’ve got my MMS and tethering working perfectly since the launch of 3.1.
It is early, break-of-dawn-early to be more specific. By introducing this cutting edge technology to the general public, Apple and ATT will change how the world sees at mobile computing forever. Again.

I agree what some people say about the release being late, but if you knew how much data the iPhone consumes on their network then you would get it.. Just be patient guys MMS, will be Herr and faster and better 3G coverage right around the corner!
Ray,
You’ll see a little camera to the left of the text input boxin the Messages app.
Also, when someone sends you an MMS, the preview window you get when the phone is locked will actually show you a small sized version of the photo.
September 25? I guess this early MMS is how AT&T;sticks to their word.
Just so you know… and I’m not advocating this as an option, but… MMS is working on a jailbroken iPhone 3G with OS 3.0 and AT&T;carrier file 5.0 (yes, yes, SMS vulnerability, I know) in the San Fernando Valley (L.A. County). I presume it works on OS 3.0.1 also. This info is for those of you who would like to use tethering and MMS and haven’t up’ed to 3.1. I would expect a tethering and jailbreak hack for 3.1 soon. I’m interested to see how AT&T;is planning to charge for tethering…
GUess i’s about time. I love my iPhone, but hate AT&T;since they unilaterally modified my plan and eliminated a bunch of bonus minutes they’d agreed to. Apple should NOT continue the exclusive agreement –AT&T;sucks.
Alright, Las Vegas NV on 3.1 and carrier 5.0. No mms as far as I can see.
