From a foreigner who doesn’t belong to one party or another, it is very amusing to see the republican suporters actually believe their team has a chance. While I can sort of understand that (after all, country did elect their guy four years ago, agains better judgement of anyone with half a brain), observers from outside noticed how tremendously relieved democrats were after republicans announced their running mate. As it stands, it is clear to all of us who are objective and observe this match from the outside that, unless something extremely unpredictable happens, it will be a democratic landslide in November.
Obviously, there are many on this forum who might find this offensive, as tye sincerely believe (in) their conservative candidate(s). My intention was not to offend anyone; just to present an outside view of an incredibly unusual presidential contest.
America would do better to nominate people with better skills for the most important job in the world (that goes for both political parties). In America, we tend to vote based on qualifications like who’d we most want to have a beer with, who we can relate to, who’s as normal as the common man. That’s how George W. Bush got elected twice. It seems like the higher your education, the worse chance you have to become president. That’s why people like John McCain who graduated practically at the bottom of his naval class and Sarah Palin with her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism actually have a chance at becoming our leaders.

He worked for Acorn, a community organizer, by helping get people register to vote (Acorn’s mission statement, “vote early, vote often”).
As a State Senator he help Slum Lords in South Chicago make hundreds of millions of dollars off the government and poor. He wrote no bills. Then Obama had two years in the U.S. Senate, one of which he wrote no bills (or code sponsored any bills). The last years he has been running for president.

I’m a foreigner; not a Lib, or Dem, or Conservative, or whatever they label people in the US.
The online poll linked from a post further back looks exactly oposite from the one four years ago. When many were seeing a close race with Kerry edging ahead, most of us watching from the outside saw it clearly as a victory for the incumbent.
Watching American presidential campaigns for the past 16 years (since Bush Sr. lost to Clinton), it became clear to me that the Americans themselves have a very hard time seeing the outcome or predicting it. Astute outside observers could always easily see which way it would go; even with Gore-Bush, it was clear that Gore would win, but Bush would end up getting it.
I’m fascinated by the ability of American media to totally obfuscate the campaign issues and candidates’ skills to the point that everyone genuinely believes their guy will clearly win (and oftentimes, in a landslide).
I’d love to be proven wrong sometimes (not for political reasons, since neither administration in the White House would make any difference to me), but it really looks all but clear that it will be a change of guard in Washington.
My only hope (for the sake of America) is that the new guy doesn’t end up the same way as JF Kennedy did in the 60; young, charismatic, and dead a few years into the presidency…

Obama doesn’t have years in Washington, something I actually consider a plus considering how corrupt the environment has become. Besides, experience when selecting a President is extremely overrated since there is no amount of experience that can prepare someone to be the President. The difference between Palin and Obama, besides the office they are running for, isn’t their experience but the fact that nobody has any idea what Palin actually stands for. Yes we know she’s a hockey mom, we know she’s willing to spew out right wing talking points, but nobody knows where she actually stands on the issues, including her I’m afraid (doesn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is??). Obama has been in the spotlight for nearly 2 years where we’ve been able to witness his temperament, positions, intelligence, capacity for judgement, as well as his weaknesses. Obama was elected by Democratic voters to represent his party, Palin was selected as a political choice that could potentially be disastrous for this nation. National health care – You got that one.
For less taxes – To be fair we need to add deficit as part of tax (tax deferment for government). If you take that into account our tax increased significantly in last 8 years.

Yes I know the right wing talking points, that was my point. We haven’t had enough time to really find out how she thinks because she’s never been tested. On top of that they won’t allow anybody in the media, with the exception to Gibson, to interview her so getting real information to real questions is pretty hard to come by these days. What I’ve found on my own is she’s willing to ban books from public libraries that she doesn’t agree with, doesn’t think global warming is man made, and thinks the war in Iraq is God’s will. I’ve heard rumors that she doesn’t believe in evolution and thinks creationism should be taught in schools alongside evolution. Pretty scary but at least she’s a hockey mom which should be comforting for those who are worried about her someday possibly leading the most powerful country in the world.

Where have you been the last 8 years? You don’t have to go back to Nixon, or even Reagan, to find the most disastrous administration in recent history. Neither of them started a war on lies. When you think about the implications of doing that, then you’ll realize how disastrous the bush administration has been for the US. If you think the nearly 3000 dead on 9/11 is bad, the latest number that I’ve heard who have been killed in the Iraq war is over 1 million, taken from a January 2008 survey. That’s a lot of mothers, brothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, cousins, grandparents, nephews, nieces and friends that have been killed unnecessarily in our illegal war. I can’t imagine that has done a whole lot to bolster pro-american sentiment in the Middle East which is the only real weapon we have in our “war against terrorism”.
Nixon continued and furthered a war based on lies; far more died in Vietnam than either of these BS Middle East campaigns. Sure, the “war on terror” is an abomination, but the body count is not even close to Vietnam.

It is ironic how this 1 million casualty count is quite a lot higher than was the total victim count under Saddam Husein’s regime. The dead (that is, vast majority of them) are as innocent today as were Saddam’s victims. Add to that the abundance of fresh recruits for the radical Islamist cause that the war has produced and that didn’t exist in the pre-war Iraq, the end result and bottom line of this effort is really impressive…

Bush brought us out of a recession left by Clinton who pardoned terrorists while he left office including one that helped his wife get elected senator. Bush has got no credit for keeping our country safe, no credit for the relative economic prosperity of most of his term of office, blamed because we haven’t caught Osama Bin Ladin when Clinton gets a full pass for not taking him when he was offered up during his presidency.
Bush is far from perfect, he’s screwed up badly on protecting the southern border, he’s bloated the size of government and added a massive entitlement medicare prescription drug program, but he’s hardly satan. He’s not wildly popular but outside the kook fringe leftists he’s not hated either.
The hyperbole from the left is just getting too hard to listen to. The way they are going after Palin is just another example of how far they have gone off the deep end.
McCain won’t be perfect either, but at least if he wins we’ll have some sanity in the white house, and perhaps one that will listen to some common sense. Sadly we’ll have to continue to hear the howling of the left that will scream from the top of their lungs at every minor gaff that McCain makes.

You’re mischaracterizing my views. I do believe Congress has a very strong role in the collapse of the capital markets, but there’s plenty of blame to go around. Fannie May and Freddie Mac were a giant slush fund for congress.
Obama is heavily tied up in it with a major campain advisor as a former member of the board “A former member of Barack Obama’s VP search team, James A. Johnson, served as chairman of Fannie Mae.”

Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating
OBAMA＿S TROUBLING INTERNET FUND RAISING
Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating phone call I have received during this election cycle came this week from one of the Obama＿s campaign internet geeks. These are the staffers who devised Obama＿s internet fund raising campaign which raised in the neighborhood of $200 million so far. That is more then twice the total funds raised by any candidate in history ＿ and this was all from the internet campaign.
What I learned from this insider was shocking but I guess we shouldn＿t be surprised that when it comes to fund raising there simply are no rules that can＿t be broken and no ethics that prevail.
Obama＿s internet campaign started out innocently enough with basic e-mail networking , lists saved from previous party campaigns and from supporters who visited any of the Obama campaign web sites.
Small contributions came in from these sources and the internet campaign staff were more than pleased by the results.
Then, about two months into the campaign the daily contribution intake multiplied. Where was it coming from? One of the web site security monitors began to notice the bulk of the contributions were clearly coming in from overseas internet service providers and at the rate and frequency of transmission it was clear these donations were ＿programmed＿ by a very sophisticated user.
While the security people were not able to track most of the sources due to firewalls and other blocking devices put on these contributions they were able to collate the number of contributions that were coming in seemingly from individuals but the funds were from only a few credit card accounts and bank electronic funds transfers. The internet service providers (ISP) they were able to trace were from Saudi Arabia , Iran , and other Middle Eastern countries. One of the banks used for fund transfers was also located in Saudi Arabia
Another concentrated group of donations was traced to a Chinese ISP with a similar pattern of limited credit card charges.
It became clear that these donations were very likely coming from sources other than American voters. This was discussed at length within the campaign and the decision was made that none of these donations violated campaign financing laws.
It was also decided that it was not the responsibility of the campaign to audit these millions of contributions as to the actual source (specific credit card number or bank transfer account numbers) to insure that none of these internet contributors exceeded the legal maximum donation on a cumulative basis of many small donations. They also found the record keeping was not complete enough to do it anyway.
This is a shocking revelation.
We have been concerned about the legality of ＿bundling＿ contributions after the recent exposure of illegal bundlers but now it appears we may have an even greater problem.
I guess we should have been somewhat suspicious when the numbers started to come out. We were told (no proof offered) that the Obama internet contributions were from $10.00 to $25.00 or so.
If the $200,000,000 is right, and the average contribution was $15.00, that would mean over 13 million individuals made contributions? That would also be 13 million contributions would need to be processed. How did all that happen?
I believe the Obama campaign＿s internet fund raising needs a serious, in depth investigation and audit. It also appears the whole question of internet fund raising needs investigation by the legislature and perhaps new laws to insure it complies not only with the letter of these laws but the spirit as well.

So, where is the straight-talking, commonsense John McCain of 2000? I’m afraid he is long gone, replaced by a desperate version of himself who seems to contradict nearly everything he once stood for.
What becomes apparent in his ideological about-face is just how out of touch McCain really is with America’s working families. [..]

In this regard you are correct. I know he’s an eeeevil librul and all, but if you really believe what you’re saying here then I would urge you to check out Dr. Lawrence Lessig’s current project, the “Change Congress” initiative. I got to see him speak on this subject at the “Netroots Nation” conference in Austin 2 months ago and it was awesome. You can watch it on his site or at this site (I added the latter because I can’t be sure from my work desk whether the link on Lessig’s blog still works), or you can download the talk for your iPod via iTunes (search for Lessig unser podcasts and get the Netroots nation keynote from 7/24/08). He cited Fannie and Freddie as one of many, many examples of the corrupting influence of money on the decision-making regulatory process. Despite being a liberal he criticized both sides. He gave one important example about telecom regulation – years ago Al Gore proposed combining DSL and cable broadband under a new title “Title VII” of the telecommunications act of 1996 to essentially deregulate them. After his staff took this idea to Congress, Congress said “Hell No – how will we raise money from telcoms if we deregulate them?!” So the question from this liberal for folks on the right is “How much extortion-enabling regulation is there?”
However it is just as much a mistake to automatically assume all regulation is bad, as many extreme libertarians and “conservatives” do. This seems to be the straw man view you put forth when you say Democrats want “full scale redistribution of wealth and socialized everything” and “massive centralized control over the country”. I am a liberal (at least by the current definition of our media), but like FDR, recognize that capitalism is a model that works well within certain bounds (much like the Newtonian theory of motion works well within bounds where masses are finite and velocities are much less than the speed of light, but it breaks down outside those bounds).
One metaphor the Democrats don’t use, that I think of over and over when I hear Obama speak about the need for regulation: the markets operate like team sports — like say, a football game. Team sports don’t operate well without referees, and that’s exactly what’s happened under the Republicans.
We need referees here because history shows, as FDR understood, that left to their own devices our great financial institutions will jump lemming-like over the cliff every time. Whatver crazy investment scheme or bubble is hot, the wizards of Wall Street will jump on every time. Which would be OK if they were the only one in the hazard, but if the bank failure takes YOUR life savings with it, that is a threat to the country as a whole!
Republicans can blame Clinton all they want — the fact is, the Republicans under leadership of such brain trusts as Phil Gramm have methodically removed the REFEREES from the games, and look what’s happened. One of the primary reasons investors shy away from putting money into third world countries is an ABSENCE OF REGULATION.

I’d add that I’m not a goose stepping conservative nazi Republican any more than I’m a toe tag government knows best liberal. I have my very own views about just about everything and I’m more than willing to listen to both sides, and in many cases I think both Republicans and Democrats are both wrong, for example on the border issue.
The reason I argue more strongly against liberals than conservatives is because they want to restrict MY rights more, from the neo-McCarthyism of “political correctness” to the assumption that spending someone else’s money for them is somehow “compassionate” to the disgusting slimy vitriol in the main stream liberal press which has completely lost any sense of credibility.
Sure there are very religious conservatives who’d like to restrict rights, but I’m not as threatened by them as I am by liberals because they do not have the weight of the full main stream media behind them, nor do they come across as obnoxious and vitriolic as liberals do. The most extreme conservatives might be like that but not the majority of them, liberals all buy into the neo-McCarthy political correctness it’s become part of our popular culture to the point people have lost jobs due to it. Many people have.
Bottom line is I’m far more threatened by liberalism than conservatism even tho my personal beliefs line up with some of each and neither in various cases.

There’s no need for an “ethics investigation” for removing a political appointee. They are there at the pleasure of the person they serve under. Having an investigation AT ALL is automatically suspect.

Republicans and conservatives are regularly called “right-wing” and “extremist” and “rigid” while liberals in the same media are rarely identified as liberal, and almost never “extremist” or “left-wing” or “activist”.
Conservative views are not more rigid than liberals, unless you set your frame of reference for them to be so. If you assume liberalism is “correct” and conservatism is “wrong” then of course conservatives are going to seem rigid because they have the “wrong” views and won’t change them. The same thing works in reverse too.
Liberals have been clinging to many false-hoods about Iraq, and more recently Palin.
Sarah Palin was against the bridge to nowhere, she cut the funding for it and told Alaskans that if they didn’t want to pay for it there was no reason to expect the federal government to. She had options to keep the bridge alive and chose to cancel the project.
Was this a reversal of an earlier stand? Yes, in part, but it is an example of the pragmatism and good judgement she has shown in her time as mayor and then governor.

6 years as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, a town of 9000 people was a joke. It was also a part time job. Also, after a hiring/firing controversy there, Sarah was forced to turn over 1/2 the mayoral job to an elected Administrator. Look it up. The place is literally a ghost town. The current mayor admits that WEEKS GO BY without any work to do. WEEKS. She admitted most work is centered on hunting/fishing violations than anything else. LOL.
The fact is, more people work in the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago than live in the entire city of Wasilla. LOL. That means the Sears Tower building manager has more “executive” experience than Palin – and more quality experience, as he has had to deal with REAL problems, like numerous terrorist plots and warnings re: his building!

FACT: Obama has run the biggest and best (in terms of money raising) campaign in American history. He has more directly-paid employees and a higher direct, hands-on budget than Sarah had in Alaska.
FACT: As Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin WORKED FROM HOME for 300 days! In other words, she’s been working from home, the same place she was Mayor, and she’s done that for the MAJORITY of her term! AND SHE BILLED THE TAXPAYERS FOR PER DIEM FOR THOSE 300 DAYS AT HOME! EVEN THANKSGIVING!!!!
The Alaska state Legislators used to wear “Where’s Sarah?” pins to the state Legislature! And by the way, the Alaska state government is the WEAKEST in the country! They only meet for 4 months out of the year! The rest of the year they’re FREAKING OFF!

He is on a first name basis with all the world leaders that matter – all the Europeans, the Israelis, and Iraq/Afghanistan – and he has met them all with the exception of Medvedev of Russia and the Saudis. He has, however, met Putin.
He has their phone numbers. The Prez of Georgia also called him, in addition to McCain.
He’s smarter than either Palin or McCain – objectively speaking. You can’t argue this. He was the #1 law student in the country when he left Harvard. YOU ALL KNOW he could have got a six-figure job right off the bat – but he went to Chicago to be a community organizer – for a salary of $11,000 a year.

If I knew someone who’d hacked Obama or Biden’s personal email and posted the information online I’d turn them in myself. It’s a despicable thing to do. The devil is always in the details. For example the Democrats are right now promoting a “comprehensive energy bill” which will allow for off shore drilling. Too bad the fine print says that the federal government will get all the revenues, which means no state will allow offshore drilling. It’s a cleverly disguised anti-off shore drilling bill disguised as a pro off shore drilling bill. Many bills have “poison pills” or problems in them which make them on the whole unacceptable.

So, your statment was OK, but mine wasn’t? There’s also your insult directed to me that I “wasn’t fit to shine [Reagan’s] shoes.” Both of these comments were directed not at public figures, nearly all of whom are worthy of some scorn, but at people you were engaged in a lively discussion with, and both of whom are on the other side of the political debate from yourself.
We all stoop to name calling at some point. My comment was directed at the leader of – arguably – one of the most corrupt administrations of the 20th century (see Iran-Contra, Nofziger/Watt/Deaver, embracing Apartheid, et al for more details); yours was directed at semi-anonymous webpage comment postings. I prefer to spend my vitriol on those who truly deserve it, and it is MY OPINION that Reagan (and his administration) is fully deserving of that vitriol, and more. You, upon hearing that opinion, proclaim “you are dead to me.” This is an open mind?
I understand where your sense of offense comes from, though: I don’t know how old you are – that is, if your were around for the Reagan era – but for many of us who are of age to remember (on both sides of the political fence, mind you), the canonization of RR by the right-wing conservative media over the last 15+ years is a truly lamentable phenomenon. He wasn’t NEARLY as popular while holding office, even amongst his own party, as he is now. I suppose one can blame 20 years of Clinton and the Bushes for that, not to mention the blowhards of conservative talk radio.
But it is NOT revisionist history to assert the economic catastrophe that the Soviet Union was facing in the 80s; even RR himself acknowledged this fact. Sure, RR helped end the Cold War, perhaps even hastened it a bit, but he DID NOT “end communism”; the Berlin Wall didn’t even come down until 2.5 years after he gave his little speech.
Sadly, we won’t be around to know how history will finally recognize RR… barring, of course, some miracle age-extension solution derived from stemcell research (not likely with this – and the upcoming – administrations). But rest assured: McCain and Palin, your guy and gal (I’m using familiar words for both genders here, lest I face your accusations of sexism) WILL win in November; unfortunately, it’s the country who will lose.

Actually, neither statement was courteous, so in that sense we were both wrong. You made your point rather crudely as you could just has easily have said:

Your bias is showing. An outlet for conservatives to speak their minds does not exist in the horrendously and criminally liberally bias main stream media which is shaming their duty as an outlet for truth and scrutiny of our government. They fail because they only look carefully at the failings of one side. Without conservative talk radio there would be zero broadcast examination of the failings of the democratic side of government.

“Little speech” shows more bias from you. It was no little speech it was a widely criticized and courageous move on the part of Reagan to put Gorbechev’s feet to the fire on this issue. This speech was the end of the iron curtain.

Meh, I hope McCain wins he’s a decent guy. I can assure you I will not agree with a lot of the things he’s likely to do as president but he’s worlds better than the socialist America hating alternative, Obama.
Note, while I don’t like a lot of things about Obama, and Biden nor Clinton, Gore etc. I don’t call them names, I criticize their positions on issues, and general attitudes about policy and the nation. I liked Reagan when he was president, I know he was not perfect but he inspired the nation and moved us out of one of the worst economic periods since the great depression. Even the situation we’re in now is better than the condition of the country at the end of the Carter Administration. Although a trillion dollar bailout is going to hurt for awhile, no doubt about that.
More socialism isn’t going to create more jobs or prosperity, more government command and control of the financial markets is not going to fix what went wrong.
I suspect Obama will lose this election, and I further suspect that he and his supporters will try to turn it into a referendum on national racism, which is unfortunate because his ideas and policies are wrong for this country.
The color of his skin is meaningless. But tell that to the 95+% of blacks who will vote for him.
