Report: Microsoft’s ‘Longhorn’ release slipping into mid-2007

“Several sources here have insisted that not only is Microsoft highly unlikely to get its up and coming Longhorn OS out by Yuletide next year, it may not manage to deliver the real McCoy until four or five months later,” The Inquirer reports in a brief article.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Why wait forever for something that’ll still be a poor substitute for the world’s most advanced operating system, Apple’s Mac OS X Tiger, that also happens to be available right now? Longhorn is already a stripped-down shell of what Microsoft had promised it to be; it’s already being referred to as “Windows XP Service Pack 3.” If Microsoft’s Longhorn, which is currently described (charitably, perhaps) as a “train wreck” by Windows expert Paul Thurrott, is going to require many people to have to purchase of a new PC just to run it, why not just buy a Mac and cross-grade your software instead? It’s a no-brainer. The vast majority of the world would be far better off with a Mac for personal computing and, if you want, a Sony PlayStation for games. Moo.

  1. I hope Apple comes up with some really spiffy amazing things for 10.5, and then just sits on them… waiting, lurking in the shadows. Then, about 3 weeks before Longhorn is being released, Steve Jobs stands up and says “oh, one more thing…” ;-}

  2. Can someone post M$’s OS release dates from the past again?– this constant delay is quite amazing to me. I’ve been Mac-only since 1997, so I’m not exactly up on the Windows world– but it seriously seems like forever since anything significant has been done on their side in a long while!

  3. I don’t know when but it wasn’t last year ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Still, I see no WAY it will be delayed past 2006. Even if MS has to cut major stuff. (Well, they already have, but…)

I’m sure they have a {plan} for releasing it no matter what. Lucky Windows folks!

  4. The problem is the legacy code, and the massive user base. It’s quite a rabbit to pull out of a hat. Apple was very lucky to have a smaller and very dedicated user base when they made the switch to OS X.

  5. I really don’t like those posters. “whatever happened to longhorn? the wait is over” ? that implies A. longhorn will/is good and B. apple ripped off longhorn and was able to ship it faster.

and “redmond, start your photocopiers” how does that make sense? I’m not programmer but last i heard OS’s are written electronically, not on skinned trees.

  6. Oh wow. I’m surprised that Carl Carlson even made it on the internet super highway. Wait a second. I’m not a programmer but how does the internet super highway make sense? Last I heard the internet is not really a physical place that cars can travel on like a highway.

  7. I think that by the time windows releases longhorn apple will be releasing its next major feline.

Got any ideas for the name…

How about MAC OS X.V = COUGAR

  8. Surprise surprise! I wonder when it was that MS started to attract the vitriol it gets these days. Was it their arrogance? Or their success/monopoly? Or the antics of Ballmer – and li’l Bill? There must be a good story in their for some tech journo because if Longhorn is now delayed into 2007 and security is the mishmash of patches it is today MS will attract a lot more than vitriol in the coming months I reckon.

Even with a lousy OS Apple Mac could be making inroads. I look forward soon to a good 20% -and growing- marketshare.

PS To Carl above try to be less literal: “start you photocopiers” is a metaphor and the other “it’s arrived” is irony etc etc etc.

  9. my 107year old great grandma could write an OS faster & better than Microsloft, but she’s having too much fun surfin the porn sites and finishing her Phd on her Mac w/OS X…………..

    MDN magic word= care
as in……..does anyone REALLY care when or if schlonghorned ever makes it to market ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    NOT!!!!!!!!!

  10. “of course Longhorn release slips after Tiger ships: more features to copy now. Those from Panther no longer suffice.”

iPodder – this should, of course, read, “Those from Helios [aka Mac OS X Public Beta] no longer suffice.”

    Other than that, spot on ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    =:~)

  11. beatsme: being on Windows cannot be characterized as ‘misfortune’.

Hence, no schadenfreude when bashing M$ at these news and/or those of virus infections. Windows users CHOOSE to stay on Windows. It is not misfortune, it is masochism. Some people like to be beaten up.

MDN magic word “nothing” as in: Longhorn delayed? Wow, really nothing new.

  12. UK Charlie: you’re right. Even Jobs at a latest interview had to admit that Redmont can’t even photocopy *fast*. They must still be looking at Cheeta ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
